Objective The effect of the ephedra/ephedrine alkaloid methylephedrine(dl-methylephedrine hydrochloride for testing in this paper)on cognitive related synaptic plasticity was investigated by recording extracellular field evoked potentials and its LTP in hippocampal dentate granule cells in urethane-anaes- thetized rats in *** Single pathway recording of evoked field potentials was made from the den- tate granule cells of hippocampal hemisphere in response to stimulation of the ipsilateral medial perforant path(MPP).Two parameters,the amplitude of population spike(PS amplitude)and the latency of the PS, were employed to evaluate the effects of drug on the overall changes in cellular *** The pre- sent study show that methylephedrine 90 mg·kgintraperitoneally,about 1/3 LD,could increase the la- tency of the PS in hippocampal dentate granule cells by constant single stimulation of the MPP as the basal ***,the 30 mg·kgand 10mg·kgdosage had no effect on the latency,and there are no influences of PS amplitude for all examinational *** methylephedrine 90mg·kggroup signifi- cant enhanced the development of amplitude LTP in hippocampal dentate granule cells that induced by 60 Hz,60 pulses conditional tetanus in medial perforant path ***,the 30mg·kggroup can promoted the maintenance of LTP induced by this tetanus,but no promotion on PS amplitude LTP appeared in this dosage and no any changes been found in 10mg·kgdosage *** The ephedra/ephedrine al- kaloid methylephedrine can modulate the synaptic plasticity in the lateral perforant path.A possible mecha- nism of methylephedrine on hippocampal LTP is been discussed.

Aim: To observe the cavernosal nerve function in male diabetic rats. Methods: Thirty-five male adult SD rats were divided randomly into the diabetic group (n=15) and the control group (n=10). In the diabetic group, diabetes was produced by the administration of streptozotocin (63 mg/kg) at a single intraperitoneal dosing. The latent period of reaction and the corpus cavernosal smooth muscle myopotential were observed after giving a single stimulus to the corpus cavernosal nerve. Results: Compared with the controls, the diabetic rats had a longer latent period and a higher myopotential (both P<0.01). Conclusion: Corpus cavernosal nerve dysfunction may play a role in the erectile dysfunction of diabetic rats.

Objective： To directly examine the effects ofcarnosine on neuronal excitation and inhibition in rat hippocampus in vivo. Methods： Artificial cerebrospinal fluid with carnosine was directly administrated over the exposed rat hippocampus. The changes of neuron activity in the CA1 region of hippocampus were evaluated by orthodromically- and antidromically-evoked potentials, as well as paired-pulse stimulation paradigm. Results： In both orthodromic and antidromic response potentials, carnosine transformed population spikes （PSs） with single spike into epileptiform multiple spikes. In addition, similar to the effect of 7-aminobutyric acidA （GABAA） antagonist picrotoxin, camosine decreased paired-pulse stimulating depression significantly. However, no significant change was observed in the spontaneous field potentials during the application of carnosine. Conclusion： The results indicate a disinhibition-induced excitation effect of carnosine on the CA1 pyramidal neurons. It provides important information against the application of carnosine as a potential anticonvulsant in clinical treatment.

Aim:Elevated plasma level of homocysteine(eHcy)is a recognized risk factor for ***,whether the central conduction is affected in patients with an isolated eHcy is *** this study,we addressed whether central conduction is altered in adults with ***:evoked potential studies including somatosensory(SSEP),visual(VEP)and brainstem auditory evoked potentials(BAEP),were performed to evaluate central conduction in patients with isolated ***:Nine SSEP,7 VEP,and 6 BAEP were studied in 9 patients with eHcy(age:63.3±7.5 years old,mean±standard deviation,male/female:4/5).SSEP with median nerve stimulation was delayed in peak latency of N9(5/9/55.6%,abnormal/total subjects/percentage),N13(7/9/77.8%),N20(6/9/66.7%),and/or interpeak latency of N9‑N13(5/9/55.6%),N13-N20(5/9/55.6%),and N9-N20(4/9/44.4%).There was one delayed P100 latency(1/7/14.3%)in 7 *** was within normal limits in all the 6 subjects ***:Our pilot study provided neurophysiologic evidence of central conduction slowness in patients with eHcy,which may be due to a large diameter fiber dysfunction within the somatosensory,but not the visual and auditory,white matter *** central conduction slowing in eHcy may be relevant to the pathophysiologic background for slowing the central processing.

BACKGROUND： An animal model of chronic optic nerve injury is necessary to further understand the pathological mechanisms involved. OBJECTIVE： To establish a stabilized, chronic, optic nerve crush model, which is similar to the clinical situation to explore histopathological and optic electrophysiological changes involved in this injury. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized and controlled animal trial was performed at Shanghai Institute of Neurosurgery from May to October 2004, MATERIALS： A BAL3XRAY undetachable balloon and Magic-BD catheter were provided by BLAT, France; JX-2000 biological signal processing system by Second Military Medical University of Chinese PLA, China; inverted phase contrast microscopy by Olympus, Japan. METHODS： A total of twenty normal adult cats were randomly assigned to control （n = 5） and model （n = 15） groups, according to different doses of contrast agent injected through balloons as follows： 0.2 mL injection, 0.25 mL injection, and 0.35 mL injection, with each group containing 5 animals. Imitating the clinical pterion approach, the optic nerves were exposed using micro-surgical methods. An engorged undetachable balloon was implanted beneath the nerve and connected to a catheter. Balloon size was controlled with a contrast agent injection （0.1 mL/10 min） to form an occupying lesion model similar to sellar tumors. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The visually evoked potential examination was used to study optical electrophysiology changes in pre-post chronic optical nerve injury. Ultrastructural pathological changes to the optic nerve were analyzed by electron microscopy. RESULTS： During the early period （day 11 after modeling）, visually evoked potential demonstrated no significant changes. In the late period （day 51 after modeling）, recorded VEP demonstrated that P1 wave latency was prolonged and P1 wave amplitude was obviously reduced. Following injury, the endoneurium, myelin sheath, lamella, axolemma, and axon appeared disordered. CONCLUSION

Major ozonated autohemotherapy is classically used in treating ischemic disorder of the lower limbs In the present study, we performed major ozonated autohemotherapy treatment in patients with acute cerebral infarction, and assessed outcomes according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health Stroke Score, Modified Rankin Scale, and transcranial magnetic stimulation motor-evoked potential. Compared with the control group, the clinical total effective rate and the cortical potential rise rate of the upper limbs were significantly higher, the central motor conduction time of upper limb was significantly shorter, and the upper limb motor-evoked potential amplitude was significantly increased, in the ozone group. In the ozone group, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Score was positively correlated with the central motor conduction time and the motor-evoked potential amplitude of the upper limb. Central motor conduction time and motor-evoked potential amplitude of the upper limb may be effective indicators of motor-evoked potentials to assess upper limb motor function in cerebral infarct patients. Furthermore, major ozonated autohemotherapy may promote motor function recovery of the upper limb in patients with acute cerebral infarction.

Objective: To investigate the effects of kudzuvine root on 3 kinds of brain evoked potential in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). Methods: Forty-six cases of DM2 were randomized into two groups: the control group and the treatment group, they were respectively treated orally with 50 ml of normal saline or 50ml of kudzuvine root decoction containing kudzuvine root 0.4 g/ml. The short latency somatosen-sory evoked potential (SSEP), brainstern auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and visual evoked potential (VEP) in patients were measured before and 40 min after treatment. Results: (1) SSEP in the control group was not changed significantly before and after taking normal saline (P>0.05), while in the treatment group there appeared a significant delay in peak latency (PL) of N13 wave (N13PL) and a significant shortening in N20PL and interpeak latency (IPL) between N13 wave and N20 wave (N13-N20 IPL) after kudzuvine treatment (P0.05). (2) BAEP in the control group was not changed significantly after treatment (P>0.05), while in the treatment group Ⅰ-Ⅲ IPL and Ⅰ-Ⅴ IPL were significantly shortened, showing significant difference as compared with those in the control group (both P0.05), while in the treatment group the amplitude of P100 wave increased obviously (P0. 05). Conclusion: Kudzuvine could shorten the latent period of brain evoked potential and the central transmission time, increase the amplitude of cortex wave and turn it back to normal, thus to effectively protect and accommodate the brain function in patients with DM2.
