We observed the steady-state visually evoked potential(SSVEP) from a healthy subject using a compact quad-channel potassium spin exchange relaxation-free(SERF) optically pumped magnetometer(OPM). To this end, 30 s of data were collected, and SSVEP-related magnetic responses with signal intensity ranging from 150 fT to 300 f T were observed for all four channels. The corresponding signal to noise ratio(SNR) was in the range of 3.5–5.5. We then used different channels to operate the sensor as a gradiometer. In the specific case of detecting SSVEP, we noticed that the short channel separation distance led to a strongly diminished gradiometer signal. Although not optimal for the case of SSVEP detection, this set-up can prove to be highly useful for other magnetoencephalography(MEG) paradigms that require good noise *** its compactness, low cost, and good performance, the K-SERF sensor has great potential for biomagnetic field measurements and brain-computer interfaces(BCI).

The role of the ipsilaterally descending motor pathways in the recovery mechanisms after unilateral hemispheric damage is still poorly understood. Motor output reorganization was investigated in a 56-year-old male patient with acquired unilateral hemispheric atrophy due to Rasmussen encephalitis. In particular,the ipsilateral corticospinal pathways were explored using focal transcranial magnetic stimulation. In the first dorsal interosseous and wrist extensors muscles, the median amplitudes of the ipsilateral motor evoked potentials induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation in the patient were higher than those of 10 age-matched healthy control subjects. In the biceps brachii muscle, the median amplitudes of the ipsilateral motor evoked potentials were the second largest in the patient compared to the controls. This study demonstrated a reinforcement of ipsilateral motor projections from the unaffected motor cortex to the hemiparetic hand in a subject with acquired unihemispheric cortical damage.

AIM: To study a novel technique to record spinal and cortical evoked potentials (EPs) simultaneously in response to electrical stimulation in the human rectum. METHODS: Eight male and nine female healthy volunteers participated. Stimulating electrodes were attached to the rectal mucosa at 15 cm and 12 cm above the dentate line. Recording skin electrodes were positioned over vertebrae L4 through S2. The electrical stimulus was a square wave of 0.2 ms duration and the intensity of the stimulus varied between 0 and 100 mA. EP responses were recorded using a Nicolet Viking IV programmable signal ***: Simultaneous recording of cortical and spinal EPs was obtained in > 80% of the trials. The EP responses increased with the intensity of the electrical stimulation, were reproducible overtime, and were blocked by application of Lidocaine jelly at the site of stimulation. The morphology (N1/P1), mean ± SD for latency (spinal N1, 4.6 ± 0.4 ms; P1, 6.8 ± 0.5 ms; cortical N1, 136.1 ± 4.2 ms; P1, 233.6 ± 12.8 ms) and amplitude (N1/P1, spinal, 38 ± 7 μV; cortical 19 ± 3 μV) data for the EP responses were consistent with those in the published literature. Reliable and reproducible EP recordings were obtained with the attachment of the electrodes to the rectal mucosa at predetermined locations between 16 and 8 cm above the anal verge, and the distance between the attachment sites of the electrodes (the optimal distance being approximately 3.0 cm between the two electrodes). CONCLUSION: This technique can be used to assess potential abnormalities in primary afferent neural pathways innervating the rectum in several neurodegenerative and functional pain disorders.

Dear Editor,The moderate level of reactive oxygen species(ROS)contributes to cellular functions such as proliferation,differentiation,and infection resistance,but the excessive level of ROS causes oxidative damage which underlies the basic mechanism for aging and geriatric diseases.1 Therefore,precisely managing cellular ROS levels,meaning to keep redox homeostasis properly,stands as an aim for health and ***,this aim is challenging,as it asks not only to restrain excessive ROS accumulation at the right time and right place but also to guarantee proper ROS levels for fitting physiological *** ways for eliminating ROS put more attention on the efficiency and identified a variety of drugs and enzymes with antioxidant properties,known as enzymatic and non-enzymatic ROS scavengers,***,how to accurately manage the integrative effect of ROS scavengers in vivo remains a ***,the effectiveness of non-enzymatic antioxidants in vivo is controversial,explained mostly by the uncertainty to reach a given organ with the appropriate concentration or to work there persistently.2 As to enzymatic ROS scavengers,although their overexpression in a given place can be achieved,this mode is often unwieldy or harmful to intrinsic physiologic functions in cases.3 For this reason,we attempt to develop new ways for in vivo antioxidation,for establishing a high-quality balance between efficiency and *** the consequence,we innovated a gene expression system that can limit the excessive ROS accumulation but keep the physiological level of ROS.

It is well known that averaging is an effective method for extracting the periodic signals which are submerged in the background-noises. The Time-locked Average (TLA) with reference to the stimulated time has been a traditional way to pick up the evoked potentials from the EEG background. The premise of TLA method supposes that the latencies of evoked peaks appear relatively regular as compared with the time of stimulus. But experiment results and clinical observations tell us that the latencies of evoked potentials are not invariant rigidly after stimulations. Hence, the TLA method cannot perfectly reconstruct

Purposes: To observe the characteristics of local electroretinogram (LERG) in normal subjects and patients with maculopathies, and to evaluate the applied worth of LERG and pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) in maculopathies. Methods: LERGs at 5° and 15° macular regions were recorded from 27 normal subjects (54 eyes). The factors of age, different eyes and stimulate areas for LERG influence were observed. Meanwhile, the LERG and PVEP were recorded from 25 patients (35 eyes) with maculopathies for making contrast study. Results: In normal subjects, there was no significant influence of age to LERG. As the stimulated areas increased, the a- and b-wave amplitudes of LERG increased. In the patients with maculopathies, the a- and b-wave amplitudes of LERG at 5°, 10°and 15° macular regions were significantly lowered and the mean values of P1 latency were prolonged and N1-P1 amplitudes of VEP were lowered, comparing with the control group. Although the exact mechanism and most involved region of the vestibular system have not yet been fully clarified, vestibular dysfunction has been demonstrated in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is a short latency electromyographic response to sound or vibration stimuli that may reflect otolith organ or related reflex functions. Since its first description in 1992, VEMP has become a significant part of the vestibular test battery as an objective measurement tool. In diabetic patients, VEMP responses have been studied in order to determine any otolith organ or related reflex dysfunctions. Here, we review the literature with regard to VEMP findings representing any peripheral vestibular end-organ dysfunction in patients with DM. Distinctive vestibular end-organ impairments seem to be demonstrated in patients with DM either with or without DNP via objective vestibular testing tools including VEMP recordings according to relevant studies. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are required to reveal the more definitive findings of VEMP recordings regarding the vestibular pathologies in patients with DM.

Abstract Objective To investigate preliminarily the value of phrenic nerve conduction (PNC) and diaphragmatic motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in the evaluation of various respiratory dysfunction (RDF). Methods Thirty four patients with various RDF, (19 patients with neurogenical diseases and 15 patients with respiratory disorders) were investigated. Fifty healthy volunteers served as controls. The phrenic nerve was cutaneously stimulated by electrical pulse current at the midpoint of the posterior border of the sternomastoid muscle, and the diaphragmatic muscle compound action potentials (DCAP) were recorded between the 7th and 8th intercostal space and xiphoid process. When the magnetic transcranial stimulation (MTS) of the cortex was given, the recordings were made under the condition of maximal deep inspiration. Results All patients with myopathies had normal PNC. The patients with Guillain Barre syndrome (GBS), hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) and myasthenic crisis had abnormal PNC. The findings in PNC studies remarkably correlated with RDF, while serial examinations were performed in the patients with GBS and myasthenia gravis (MG). In 7 patients with sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), 4 had abnormal PNC, and 2 of 3 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), and 1 of 5 patients with chest tightness or breathlessness on the supine position showed decreased amplitude. When MEPs were recorded, 3 of 5 patients showed abnormal SAS (1 had no response, 2 lower amplitude). Three patients with COPD had normal MEP. Conclusions PNC studies could not only evaluate neuromuscular RDF and predict the outcome of diseases, but also supply additional information about diaphragmatic dysfunction for the RDF caused by respiratory disorders. The results of PNC and diaphragmatic MEP may differentiate the types of SAS.

Background:Whether occupation has an impact on contact heat evoked potential(CHEP)results has not been *** this study,we investigated the difference of CHEP parameters between knowledge workers and unskilled ***:A total of 137 healthy participants were recruited between November 20,2014 and December 31,*** participants underwent neurologic examination,laboratory examination,and nerve conduction *** was performed on four body sites:the upper border of the distal third of the volar forearm,the upper border of the distal third of the lateral leg,the spinous process of seventh cervical vertebrae(C7),and the spinous process of 12th thoracic vertebrae(T12).Independent t test and nonparametric test were performed using SPSS software to compare the difference of the CHEP parameters between knowledge workers and unskilled ***:The“N2 latency/height”(Z=-2.290,P=0.022)and“P2 latency/height”(Z=-2.020,P=0.043)on the volar forearm of unskilled labors significantly increased than those of knowledge ***“N2 latency/height”(F=6.348,P=0.016)and“P2 latency/height”(F=5.920,P=0.018)in the distal leg of unskilled labors significantly prolonged than those of knowledge *** N2-P2 amplitude(F=5.797,P=0.020)in the distal leg of unskilled labors significantly decreased than those of knowledge ***:Our study found that significantly prolonged N2 latency and P2 latency and significantly decreased N2-P2 amplitude in the distal leg and the volar forearm in unskilled labors as to knowledge workers.
