Current status and future tendency of lake eutrophication in China

Current trophic status and trend of Chinese freshwater lakes were investigated in this study. The results showed that all lakes studied were commonly undergoing the eutrophication process, water quality decreased and lake's ecosystem is being declined. Most of the urban lakes are facing serious eutrophication. Many medium-sized lakes are in metrophic or eutrophic status, some local water are even approaching the hypertrophic level. The famous five freshwater lakes in China have entered into eutrophication in the condition of higher nutrient load. Lake Taihu, Hongze and Caohu are already in eutrophic state. Eutrophic lakes are mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River and Yungui plateau. Lake eutrophication developed rapidly. Among the 34 lakes studied in 1970's, most of lakes were in the mesotrophic status,mesotrophic water area accounted for 91.8%. With the nine year of 1978-1987 the area percentage of oligotrophic lakes decreased from 3.2% to 0.53%, and that of eutrophic lakes increased from 5.0% to 55.01%. Recent data showed 57.5% lakes were in eutrophic and hypertrophic status of the 40 surveyed lakes.Eutrophic trend of Lake Taihu, Chaohu and Xuanwu in the region of the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River was predicated using the ecological stress model. The results showed that in 2008 Lake Taihu, Chaohu and Xuanwu might be of eutrophication, eutrophication and hypertrophication, respectively if no control measurement is taken. Provided the pollution water treatment rate is 60% in 2030, approximately 30 billion ton pollution water would still be discharged directly in the lakes. Therefore, in 2030 the urban lakes in China might be eutrophication or hypertrophication, and most of the medium-sized lakes at the urban-rural fringe might be in eutrophication or hypertrophication. Physico-Chemical Analysis of eutrophication’s Parameters in a Coastal River(Cote D’ivoire)

A study on some physico-chemical and biological variables of water quality was conducted on a coastal river in Ivory Coast. It’s the first assessment on water quality state. Those coastal rivers actually play an important role in the physical, biological and hydrological exchange between lagoons and the sea. Unfortunately, they are not taken into account by the national monitoring for water quality (RNO-CI). The samples were collected along Boubo River body through three stations, in the south of Cote d’Ivoire, during two years. Results show sharp fluctuations of the concentration N-NO3- nitrate, N-NH4+ ammonium and chlorophyll a with more than 20% variation. However, small fluctuations were noted for temperature, pH and conductivity with 4% - 20%. Measures are generally inferior to the threshold for hazardous water class. But respective average concentrations of N-NO3-, P-PO43-, COD and BOD5 are above natural water threshold, representing 67% of the analyzed samples of P-PO43- and 100% of the other. These results show that the river is not exempt of pollution: 0.2 mg/l of P-PO43- and 0.9 mg/l of N-NO3- are the limits of appropriate siege for the proliferation of invasive aquatic plants (IAP).

Chemical Composition of Industrial Effluents and Their Effect on the Survival of Fish and eutrophication of Lake Hawassa, Southern Ethiopia

Growing trends in industrialization in Ethiopia have raised concerns about pollution of water bodies particularly of lakes. This study was therefore conducted to 1) characterize the chemical contents of major industrial effluents (namely textile ceramic and soft drink factories) that reached Lake Hawassa and 2) investigate the effects of the above mentioned factory effluents on survival of larvae fish and growth of algae. Effluent samples were collected from the outlet lagoons of each factory in December, 2009. Then, effluent samples were analyzed for total N, NO3-N, NH4-N, S2-, , , COD, total dissolved solids (TDS) and heavy metals at the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Laboratory, Addis Ababa. The experiments on the impact of effluents on survival of fish larvae and growth of algae were conducted using six concrete paved ponds (with different concentration of effluent). The results of chemical analysis showed that textile effluent had high COD (nearly 3 times higher), TDS (19 times higher) as well as (39 times higher) than the maximum permissible limits (MPL) set by Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). Among heavy metals, Zn and Fe of textile effluent were much higher (41 and 1.5 times higher, respectively) than the MPL set by EPA. Ceramic effluent also contained high concentration of (24.5 times), S2-, (2 times) and Zn (14 times) exceeding the limit of EPA. Regarding soft drink factory, high values of COD, and Zn were found in the effluent than the limit specified by EPA. The biological treatment lagoons of the respective source were not effective since the effluents were taken from the last treatment lagoon (outlet lagoon) and some of the measured parameters were higher than MPL. Results of the pond experiment showed that 5%, 10% and 20% concentration levels of the HTF effluent killed significantly high proportion of the fry (65%, 86.8% and 88.7%, respectively). Assessment of the Spatial and Temporal Water eutrophication for Lake Baiyangdian Based on Integrated Fuzzy Method

Water quality evaluation entails both randomness and fuzziness. Considering that water eutrophication evaluation involves many indices, different classifications and interval values, fuzzy variable sets theory was developed to Lake Baiyangdian as a study case. Taking reference to eutrophication standard of Chinese lakes and local characteristic of Lake Baiyangdian, eutrophication degree of lake was divided into 8 levels. Total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and CODMn were selected as evaluation indices in this research. Based on the measured data, index feature value matrix of sample was built. Index weights were determined by means of pure threshold value method. Relative membership degree of each index to each classification was calculated with relative difference function model. Then the stability of feature value of classification corresponding was received by the comprehensive calculation with the relative membership degree and index weights. The results show that the proposed models are effective tools for generating a set of realistic and flexible optimal solutions for complicated water quality evaluation issues. It concluded that the model was reasonable and practical.

Phycological Effects of eutrophication with Fertilizers in Nike Lake, Nigeria

Agriculture around Nike lake uses fertilizers. Fertilizers are known to cause eutrophication of water bodies and associated algal blooms whose consequences may be deleterious to the environment and man. We investigated ex situ to assess the effect of the nutrients on the algal flora and show the impact of farm land runoffs on aquatic environment. The lake water was analysed for initial nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium;and algal content using standard methods. The fertilizer sources used by the farmers—NPK (20:10:10 and 15:15:15);urea and poultry drops, were used in the study to enrich the lake water in concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 1.0 and 2.0 g/L in three replicates respectively. A control was set up without the fertilizer sources and the set up was left on a laboratory bench and monitored for 36 days. Cyanobacteria (blue green algae), Chlorophyta (green algae) and Bacillariophyta (diatoms) were encountered and their population increased with time and increase in concentration of fertilizers. The following taxa were encountered—Gloeocapsa, Anabaena, Oscillatoria (blue-green algae);Chlorella, Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra, Closterium, Pediastrum, Ankistrodesmus, Selenastrum, Scenedesmus, Staurastrum (green algae);Pinnularia and Navicula (diatoms) some of which are notable bloom forming species.

Managing eutrophication in Nigeria Inland Waters

Recently in Nigeria, cultural eutrophication is on the increase in water bodies. Observations from land use around riverine areas are predominantly for farmland and explain the high level of phosphate from runoff during the rainy season. Increased siltation, deforestation, flooding, lumbering activities and other land use perturbation are among the causes of eutrophication. Aquatic animals usually suffer hypoxia and anoxia and the anesthetic quality of water for recreational activities, like swimming, boating and picnic is reduced. The Federal Ministry of environment (FMENV) and River Basin Authority of Nigeria should ensure that all those involved in effluent discharge into water bodies follow the established frame work and existing guidelines. Point source and non-point sources of pollution should be monitored and the adoption of mathematic model which describes the overall nutrient runoff and the catchment model suitable for describing the overall transport of water and nutrient through the river basin should be encouraged as practiced in Poland.

Distribution Characteristics of Nutrients and eutrophication Assessment in the Offshore Area of Northern Shandong

According to the survey data of three voyages in the offshore area of northern Shandong in May,August and October 2018,the distribution characteristics and water qualities of DIN,PO_(4-)P and COD in different seasons were analyzed,and the eutrophication status of the sea area was assessed by single factor index,eutrophication index and organic pollution comprehensive index.The results showed that the seawater in the surveyed area mainly belonged to class I and class II seawater,and DIN was the maximum factor influencing seawater quality.The planar distribution of DIN concentrations showed a decreasing trend from west to east,and high value areas appeared near the Yellow River Estuary and Xiaoqing River Estuary.The concentrations of PO_(4-)P were lower,and the planar distribution law was not obvious.The concentrations of COD were high near shore and low offshore,high in the western sea area and low in the eastern sea area.The eutrophication status of the sea area was not up to the eutrophication level,and red tides were less likely to occur,but there was a possibility of organic pollution.

Present Situation of eutrophication of Landscape Water Body and Its Prevention and Control Measures

At present,all kinds of pollutants are discharged into the landscape water body,and the landscape water body is mostly static or slow flow state. This leads to the deepening of water pollution,eutrophication,blackening of water body,and stench and flood disasters occur frequently. This makes the urban landscape water lose its ornamental value,affects the effective operation of ecological function,and will also endanger the health of residents. Reclaimed water is one of the common methods of modern landscape water,but reclaimed water contains a lot of nitrogen and phosphorus,which will make the eutrophication of water body increase,and easily lead to " algal blooms",water quality deterioration,and loss of landscape function. Therefore,understanding the current situation of landscape water eutrophication and effective prevention and control measures has become one of the water environment problems to be solved.

Experimental Research on the Application of Water Hyacinths to the Ecological Restoration of Water Bodies with eutrophication

[Objective] The study aims to discuss the application of water hyacinths to the ecological restoration of water bodies with eutrophication through simulation experiments. [Method] In this study, water hyacinths were used to restore the simulated eutrophic water with green algae as the dominant algae species, and then the restoration effect of the simulated eutrophic water by water hyacinths was analyzed. [Result] In the simulation test without sediment, the peak chlorophyll concentration was 434.6 mg/m3 in the tank without water hyacinths, which decreased to 285 and 119 mg/m3 respectively in the tanks with 1 and 4 water hyacinths. In the experiment with sediment, compared with the control tank without water hyacinths, a 58% reduction in chlorophyll concentration could be observed in the tank with 4 water hyacinths planted (with a coverage of 51%). The results showed that water hyacinths could inhibit alga growth notably, but there was likely a density threshold (51% coverage), and no significant eco-restoration effect was observed in the simulated eutrophic water with too few water hyacinths planted. [Conclusion] The research could provide scientific references for the ecological restoration of eutrophic water bodies.
