The paper explores two aspects in classical Chinese rhetoric： collectivism and collective ethos. It looks closely at some of the key notions, like harmony, face, and cheng-yan （诚言） to show how the spirit of collectivism drives Chinese rhetoric on a path different from its Western counterpart, which is defined as an art of persuasion characteristic of personal endeavors.

This paper studies how different cultural values and rhetorical traditions may influence students＇ perceptions and understanding of effective ethos in persuasive essays. Fifty Chinese EFL （English as a foreign language） college students and 50 American college students participated in writing English persuasive essays on the selected topics. The essays were then compared for similarities and differences in the use of rhetorical appeals with a focus on ethos, the credibility, and trustworthiness of an author. The study revealed that participants from both groups established ethos as an important rhetorical tool to persuade the audience to accept their viewpoints. However, they displayed different perceptions of what effective ethos entailed. For Chinese participants, effective ethos seemed to come from using detailed explanations that reflected an author＇s intention to advocate an ethical or moral message based on some Chinese cultural values. But, strong ethos for American participants appeared to mean the use of evidence--facts and personal testimony--to establish the writer＇s trustworthiness. The interpretation of the results from the perspective of different cultural value orientations was also discussed.

Aim: Validated instruments exist measuring parts of personal health, ill-health and lifestyle, but there are few, if any, instruments “grasping the big picture” of wellness and ethos. Accordingly the aim was to develop and establish the psychometric properties of a 74-item ethos towards Wellness Questionnaire (EtWeQ) with regards to content and construct validity, as well as homogeneity and stability reliability. Methods: A questionnaire based on a methodological and developmental design was sent out twice with a four week gap between, on 221 healthy middle-aged participants in four steps: item generating, content validating, statistical analyzing and establishing the final questionnaire. Results: The substantial base, consisting of content validity resulted in, besides basic characteristics, six well-defined and sufficient indexes comprising of;two health indexes (healthiness and ill-healthiness), three life context indexes (work, family, spare time), and one brief comprehensive index (ethos). The three life context as well as the ethos indexes at an ordinal scale level, identified overall satisfactory communalities of >0.30, factor loadings > 0.30, and factor total variance > 50% with regard to construct validity. The homogeneity reliability, in terms of Cronbach’s alpha coefficient > 0.70, at both occasions with a four week gap between, as well as the stability reliability in terms of intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.70, were also considered satisfactory in the same indexes. Conclusions: This newly developed, and likely the only questionnaire focusing on “grasping the big human picture”, was based on both a philosophical reasoning and empirical recommendations of wellness, is shown to be a valid and reliable measurement in screening or in follow-up of healthy people’s wellness and ethos.

This paper examines how Sun Guoting employs interpersonal metadiscourse to realize the credible appeal in his treatise Shu *** findings of the research indicate the credible appeal aided by this metadiscourse helps illuminate the rhetorical success of Shu *** markers as well as attitude markers prevail,which contribute to the ethos of a determined,upright and passionate calligraphy critic,scholar and ***,hedges,commentaries and attributors of interpersonal metadiscourse also carry credible meanings for Sun’s readers,though used less frequently.

In 1840, Alexis de Tocqueville coined the term ＂individualism＂ to refer to the tendency for Americans to withdraw into their own desires and interests, thus weakening and diminishing the ＂habits of the heart＂ that bind a generation to the customs of their forebears and contemporaries. A problem, though, is that modem individualism undermines the very ideals--i.e, autonomy, equality, and freedom--that motivated it in the first place. Understood as a way of life, liberal individualism is permeated by alienation, estrangement, and thoughtless patterns of conformism. In what follows, I hope to show that hermeneutic phenomenology as developed by Martin Heidegger marks an important break from the modem liberal individualistic outlook. The point is to undercut the contrived interpretations of our current historical tradition in order to demonstrate that belonging to and sharing in the struggles of a generation are conditions for being human at all. This critique does not provide a panoptic or definitive account of the basis of a genuine community, but does give us a richer sense of place and purpose, beyond even what the current polis/political community designates （though it certainly includes it）.

中华民族精神的基本要素是实用理性。清朝末季，随着对外战争的失败，中国思想界逐渐认识到传统文化的缺陷，从而丧失了原有的民族自信心并萌发了改变民族精神的要求。但由于实用理性的影响，传统儒学与专制政治结合甚紧，所以不可能再走“强化”传统的路子；同样由于实用理性的影响，中华民族精神不可能由世俗性道德转化为宗教性道德，所以最后的选择只能是继续囿于此岸世界的转化，这也就意味着难以突破实用理性的瘤疾。
