This study investigated the presence of pharmaceuticals in the water and sediment of Buffalo and Sundays River Estuary,South Africa.Extraction for water and sediment samples was achieved with solidphase extraction and ultrasonic extraction methods,respectively.Quantification of the target analytes was done with UPLC-QTOF-MS.The pH of surface water in all the sampling sites(8.18-10.1)were above the WHO guideline(6.5).A good correlation was observed between the concentrations of analytes with organic matter and organic carbon.Results showed that carbamazepine exhibited the highest concentration(8.75±1.45 mg/kg)of all the pharmaceuticals,while trimethoprim has the highest detection frequency with the highest concentration of 1.62±0.83 mg/kg in the sediment samples.Sulfamethoxazole was below the detection limit in both Estuaries.Calculated risk quotients revealed that carbamazepine and trimethoprim could be of potential risk,while caffeine may pose a very low risk to the aquatic organisms investigated.Proper monitoring of the runoff entering Buffalo Estuary is required,being the point of discharge of Buffalo River to the Indian Ocean.Also,the domestic waste discharge from residences in the surroundings of Sundays Estuary should be monitored.

Studies of the Biogeochemistry of Typical Estuaries and Bays in China

Springer has recently published the book entitled “Studies of the Biogeochemistry of Typical Estuaries and Bays in China”. Professor Shen Zhiliang from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, authored and complied this book. The new book collects, compiles, and summarizes the studies on the biogeochemical cycling of the biogenic elements in mainly two typical regions in China, i.e., the Changjiang (Yangtze) River estuary and Jiaozhou Bay, and other regions are touched in the aspects of nutrients, suspended particulate matter, phytoplankton, and heavy metals, etc., in biogeochemistry, ecology, environmental science, oceanography, and biology etc.

Mixing process in Estuaries

A theoretical expression for vertical profile of horizontal velocity in terms of its depth-average is derived based on osciillatory boundary layer theory and estuarine flow characteristics. The derived theoretical profile is then incorporated into a vertical quasi-two-dimensional model, which is proved advantageous in more physical implications and less CPU time demand. To validate the proposed model, the calculated results are compared to the field data in the Yangtze River Estuary, exhibiting good agreement with observations. The proposed quasi-two-dimensional vertical model is used to study mixing process, especially dependence of salinity distribution and salt front strength on runoff and tides in Estuaries.

Infrastructure for collaborative science and societal applications in the Columbia River estuary

To meet societal needs, modem estuarine science needs to be interdisciplinary and collaborative, combine discovery with hypotheses testing, and be responsive to issues facing both regional and global stakeholders. Such an approach is best conducted with the benefit of data-rich environments, where information from sensors and models is openly accessible within convenient timeframes. Here, we introduce the operational infrastruc- ture of one such data-rich environment, a collaboratory created to support （a） interdisciplinary research in the Columbia River estuary by the multi-institutional team of investigators of the Science and Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation ＆ Prediction and （b） the integration of scientific knowledge into regional decision making. Core components of the operational infrastructure are an observation network, a modeling system and a cyber-infrastructure, each of which is described. The observation network is anchored on an extensive array of long-term stations, many of them interdisciplinary, and is complemented by on-demand deployment of temporary stations and mobile platforms, often in coordinated field campaigns. The modeling system is based on finite- element unstructured-grid codes and includes operational and process-oriented simulations of circulation, sediments and ecosystem processes. The flow of information is managed through a dedicated cyber-infrastructure, con- versant with regional and national observing systems.

Two manglicolous lichen species namely,Graphis ajarekarii Patw.and C.R.Kulk on the twigs of Avicennia officinalis from Nagayalanka lighthouse of Krishna estuary,Andhra Pradesh and Ramalina leiodea(Nyl.)Nyl.on the twigs of Ceriops decandra from Bhitarkanika island of Mahanadi estuary,Orissa state are reported.Both the species are new records on the mangroves of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa states of India.

1 Introduction Pore is the major oil and gas reservoir, and its volume and structure determines the gas capacity of shale and the occurrence mode of gas. The development of shale porosity is mainly affected by the content and diagenesis of quartz, clay and some other minerals, the content and maturity of TOC, the strength and time of tectonic activities etc., besides the study ofpore＇s character of shale reservoir is an important prerequisite to exploration and production of shale hydrocarbon and guarantee and improvement of hydrocarbon reserves. Among pores, the organic pores include organic matter pores and biological fossil pores.

A 2000 Year Multi-Proxy Evidence of Natural/Anthropogenic Influence on Climate from the Southwest Coast of India

The last millennium climate reconstructions are complex and limit our understanding of the mechanisms behind environmental and climate variability. We present multi-proxy centennial-scale records from the Cherai, southwest India. The last 2000 cal yr AD record suggests a complex environmental condition that prevailed at the depositional site augmenting the role of natural as well as anthropogenic agents. Increased elemental variations and indices values indicate stronger weathering, presumably wetter conditions and intense precipitation. Provenance studies suggest diverse sources and the main composition fall close to the Charnockite and Gneissic composition. Multi-proxy data suggests that a shift towards wetter climatic conditions, which occurred from 910 to 1230 cal yr AD. The core also records a shift towards the drier conditions that started around 1230 cal yr AD with a loss in vegetation diversity. The pollution load index values suggest that the overall study area falls in moderate contamination levels, which are also substantiated with the diatom data indicating human influence in the natural habitat during the deposition time. The present study reveals that the enhanced Cd and As concentration is due to strong anthropogenic influence. We compared the multi-proxy record with other continental and marine palaeoclimatic records to explore global and/or regional trends in climate variability during the last 2000 years.

The environmental protection of tropical marine and coastal areas faces different challenges due to the diversity of aspects related to these areas, which include natural, social and economical issues. Despite these challenges, efforts for the protection of these areas are urgent nowadays because of the dramatical increase of human related threats like habitat destruction and population growth. Malaga Bay (MB) is a tectonic estuarine system located in Panama Bight (central region of the Colombian Pacific coast), which due to its origin shows important environmental characteristics of few sites in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) match. For these reasons, the government of Colombia declared in 2010, the bay’s marine area as a Marine National Natural Park in order to preserve its unique estuarine marine biodiversity. Despite this measure, MB presents several conditions that make environmental protection a very difficult task. In this paper, we present the geographical context, biodiversity and natural resources, environmental threats, the complexity of economic and social context, and the institutional and legal context of MB, to exemplify the difficulty that the protection of marine areas face in the TEP.

The estuary of Tanshui River hosts the most northern mangrove population （Kandelia obovata, Sheue, Liu ＆ Yong） in Taiwan and is an important habitat for migrant waterfowls and shorebirds in East Asia. Three mangrove protected areas were established in the 1980s to stop decline of mangrove forests caused by urbanization and overdevelopment. Since then, the single-species mangrove forests have gradually expanded and invaded mudflats, and as a result, reduced estuarine biodiversity and eliminated viable habitats for shorebirds. A small patch of mudflats （0.16 ha） was created in early 2007 by removing mangrove trees and then, the changes in sediment characteristics, crab and bird populations were monitored. Most sediment characteristics （grain size, organic carbon content, redux depth） except for water content, and crab communities were not significantly different between the mangrove control sites and the reformed mudflat sites within a year. Seasonal variations were observed in organic carbon content, benthic chlorophyll a concentrations and densities of crabs. Wintering shorebirds increased dramatically in both individual numbers and species counts after the mudflat was created. The mudflat served primarily as roosting habitats for shorebirds since the benthic invertebrates did not increase enough to support birds’ nutritional needs. This pioneer study showed that mangrove wetlands can be managed to increase biodiversity, particularly the avian communities.
