Geometric error measuring,modeling,and compensation for CNC machine tools:A review

Geometric error,mainly due to imperfect geometry and dimensions of machine components,is one of the major error sources of machine tools.Considering that geometric error has significant effects on the machining quality of manufactured parts,it has been a popular topic for academic and industrial research for many years.A great deal of research work has been carried out since the 1970s for solving the problem and improving the machining accuracy.Researchers have studied how to measure,detect,model,identify,reduce,and compensate the geometric errors.This paper presents a thorough review of the latest research activities and gives an overview of the state of the art in understanding changes in machine tool performance due to geometric errors.Recent advances in measuring the geometrical errors of machine tools are summarized,and different kinds of error identification methods of translational axes and rotation axes are illustrated respectively.Besides,volumetric geometric error modeling,tracing,and compensation techniques for five-axis machine tools are emphatically introduced.Finally,research challenges in order to improve the volumetric accuracy of machine tools are also highlighted.

The existing line measurement methods are analyzed.In the process of obtaining the existing error parameters,the assumption conditions in the model developing are adopted,which makes the insufficient adaptability of the model and unreliable measurement results.A method for directly obtaining the error values of the machine tools have suggested by using a high-precision laser interferometer.The 9 lines at different places in the working space of the machine tool is proposed.A three-axes CNC vertical machining center was measured,which proved that the measurement process is easy to operate and the operation is relatively simple,which can be applied to actual industrial field measurement.This method is further popularized and can be used to verify other line measurement methods and check the error models,which has great practical application value.

Development of a monocular vision system for robotic drilling

Robotic drilling for aerospace structures demands a high positioning accuracy of the robot, which is usually achieved through error measurement and compensation. In this paper, we report the development of a practical monocular vision system for measurement of the relative error between the drill tool center point(TCP) and the reference hole. First, the principle of relative error measurement with the vision system is explained, followed by a detailed discussion on the hardware components, software components, and system integration. The elliptical contour extraction algorithm is presented for accurate and robust reference hole detection. System calibration is of key importance to the measurement accuracy of a vision system. A new method is proposed for the simultaneous calibration of camera internal parameters and hand-eye relationship with a dedicated calibration board. Extensive measurement experiments have been performed on a robotic drilling system. Experimental results show that the measurement accuracy of the developed vision system is higher than 0.15 mm, which meets the requirement of robotic drilling for aircraft structures.
