Amplifying Orbital Angular Momentum Modes in Ring-Core Erbium-Doped Fiber

Lots of research efforts have been devoted to increase the transmission capacity in optical communications using orbital angular momentum(OAM)multiplexing.To enable long-haul OAM mode transmission,an in-line OAM fiber amplifier is desired.A ring-core fiber(RCF)is considered to be a preferable design for stable OAM mode propagation in the fiber.Here,we demonstrate an OAM fiber amplifier based on a fabricated ring-core Erbium-doped fiber(RC-EDF).We characterize the performance of the RC-EDF-assisted OAM fiber amplifier and demonstrate its use in OAM multiplexing communications with OAM modes carrying quadrature phase-shift keying(QPSK)and quadrature amplitude modulation(QAM)signals.The amplification of two OAM modes over four wavelengths is demonstrated in a data-carrying OAM-division multiplexing and wavelength-division multiplexing system.The obtained results show favorable performance of the RC-EDF-assisted OAM fiber amplifier.These demonstrations may open up new perspectives for long-haul transmission in capacity scaling fiber-optic communications employing OAM modes.

Rare earth elements(REEs)are used for the developme nt of new energy materials owing to their intrinsic physicochemical property.However,excess REEs in water threaten the safety of animals,plants and humans.An efficient way to separate REEs from the water is therefore needed.In this study,a biosorbent consisting of iron oxide(Fe3 O4),persimmon tannin(PT),and graphene oxide(GO)as Fe3 O4/PT/GO was prepared,and the adsorption of trivalent Erbium(Er3+)ions from aqueous solution was investigated.The adsorption process for Er3+ions conforms to pseudo-second order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm model behavior.Thermodynamic studies indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).Fourier-transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy;Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET)analysis,and vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM)were used to assess the adsorption mechanism of Er3+ions onto the Fe3 O4/PT/GO biosorbent.A combination of electrostatic interactions,redox reactivity and chelation are responsible for adsorption of Er3+ions on the Fe3 O4/PT/GO biosorbent,The magnetic Fe3 O4/PT/GO biosorbent can be easily separated under the magnetic field for effective recycle of Er3+ions from aqueous solution.Therefore,this new biomass composite holds great promise for wastewater treatment.

Two Erbium(Ⅲ)complexes[ErCl(OAr^(Ad))_(3)][Na(THF)_(6)](1)and Er(OAr^(Ad))_(3)(2)are successfully prepared by using one variety of"hard"base ligand with large steric hindrance.The coordination geometry around the Er(Ⅲ)site changes from distorted tetrahedral to flat trigonal pyramid geometry in different solvent environment due to the removal of the coordinated chloride.Such an alternation significantly enhances the single-molecule magnet(SMM)behavior and makes the field-induced effective energy barrier(Ueff)arrive at 43(1)cm-1for the latter.Together with theoretical calculations,this study shows that strong equatorial ligand field and high local symmetry are critical to suppress the quantum tunneling of the magnetization(QTM)and achieve high-performance Erbium(Ⅲ)based SMMs.

We present a simple, compact and low-cost mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser （EDFL） using single-wMled carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs） embedded in a poly-ethylene oxide （PEO） thin film as a passive saturable absorber. The film is fabricated by using a prepared homogeneous SWCNT solution, which is mixed with a diluted PEO solution and cast onto a glass Petri dish to form, by evaporation, a thin film. The 50 μm-thick film is sandwiched between two fiber connectors to construct a saturable absorber, which is then integrated in an EDFL cavity to generate self-started stable soliton pulses operating at 1560.8nm. The soliton pulse starts to lase at a pump power threshold of 12.3mW with a repetition rate of 11.21MHz, a pulse width of 1.02ps, an average output power of 0.65 mW and a pulse energy of 57.98pJ.

We report on the generation of Q-switched and Q-switched mode-locked （QML） pulses in an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser by using a polyvinyl alcohol （PVA） -based gold nanorod （GNR） saturable absorber （SA）. The PVA- based GNR SA has a modulation depth of -4.8% and a non-saturable loss of -26.9% at 1.5 μm. A Q-switched pulse train with a repetition rate varying from 18.70 to 39.85 kHz and a QML pulse train with an envelope repetition rate tuning from 20.31 to 31.50 kHz are obtained. Moreover, the lasing wavelengths of the Q-switched pulses can be flexibly tuned by introducing a narrow bandwidth, tunable filter into the laser cavity. The results demonstrate that the GNRs exhibit good optical performance and can find a wide range of applications in the field of laser technology.

A simple mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser （EDFL） with three switchable operation states is proposed and demonstrated based on nonlinear polarization rotation. The EDFL generates a stable square pulse at a third harmonic pulse repetition rate of 87kHz as the 1480 nm pump power increases from the threshold of 17.5 m W to 34.3mW. The square pulse duration increases from 105 ns to 245ns as the pump power increases within this region. The pulse operation switches to the second operation state as the pump power is varied from 48.2mW to l16.Tm W. The laser operates at a fundamental repetition rate of 29 kHz with a fixed pulse width of 8.5 μs within the pump power region. At a pump power of ll6.TmW, the average output power is 3.84mW, which corresponds to the pulse energy of 131.5 ng. When the pump power continues to increase, the pulse train experiences unstable oscillation before it reaches the third stable operation state within a pump power region of 138.9 m W to 145.0 m W. Within this region, the EDFL produces a fixed pulse width of 2.8 μs and a harmonic pulse repetition rate of 58 kHz.

We experimentally study the chaotic behaviors in a compact all-fiber Erbium-doped fiber ring laser （ED-FRL） with an added Mach-Zehnder interferometer （MZI） by using a phase-modulation method. A piezo-electric ceramic transducer （PZT） is incorporated in the MZI to introduce single-frequency phase modulation. The coexistence of intermitteney and period-doubling bifurcation routes to chaos in the EDFRL system is observed by adjusting the modulation frequency or the phase modulation depth in the experiment. In addition, the EDFRL presents irregular multi-longitudinal-mode oscillation with a definite linear polarization when operating at intensity chaos state.

We propose a stable and high optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR)compound linear-cavity single-longitudinal-mode(SLM)Erbium-doped silica fiber laser.It consists of three uniform fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs)and two fiber couplers to form a simple asymmetric four-cavity structure to select the longitudinal mode.The stable SLM operation at the wavelength of 1544.053 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.014 nm and an OSNR of~60 dB was verified experimentally.Under laboratory conditions,a power fluctuation performance of less than 0.05 dB for 5 h and wavelength variation of less than 0.01 nm for about 150 min is demonstrated.Finally,the characteristic of laser output power as a function of pump power is investigated.The proposed system provides a simple and cost-effective approach to realize a stable SLM fiber laser.

The effect of trace element Er on the microstructure and properties of Al-6Mg-0.7Mn-0.1Cr-0.15Ti alloy was investigated. The results show that the ultimate room-temperature and high-temperature strength sof the alloy have not increased obviously with the addition of Erbium, but the uniform elongation of alloys decreases from 9% and 27.5% to 5.5% and 22.5%, respectively. The reason is that the addition of Er will first react with Ti, Cr to form Al20Ti2Er, Al8Cr4Er phases. The precipitation strengthening makes up the weakening of grain refinement strengthening. During deformation, the primary Al(TiCr)Er and Al3Er particles fracture first and act as the microcrack sources because of the stress concentration.
