Abiotic drivers shape seed inputs and outputs in a tropical wetland on Croton trinitatis population

Background:Predicting how natural and anthropogenic drivers shape different ecological indicators,such as plant populations along environmental gradients,can be a relevant tool for establishing management and conservation criteria of tropical wetlands.We aimed to assess the effects of seasonal flood disturbance,type of grasslands and topographical conditions on Croton trinitatis population distribution in a tropical wetland.Methods:The study was carried out in a seasonally flooded grassland(Central-West Brazil).We conducted samplings of soil on the dry and flood hydrophases of the Pantanal.We took the samples in eight seasonal ponds,with 1 km interval between them.Transects were marked during the flood period,observing the water level,one in the lowest zone,in the middle of the pond=low(ca.60 cm deep),one at the pond edge=mid(ca.30 cm deep)and one in the higher zone,on the external part=high(ca.1 cm deep).Results:The results showed that the topography,seasonality,and types of grassland determine differences in the abundance patterns of adult plants and seedlings,and seed bank and seed predation.The abiotic factors can shape plant population-related ecological processes and patterns,with outputs(germination and predation)and inputs(local dispersion and from neighbouring areas)of proportional seeds for the population maintenance in this environment.Conclusion:We emphasize the importance of these findings,to show that abiotic factors are not the only ones to be considered in ecological studies of distribution and structuring of populations in habitats with extreme seasonal events.

Phylogenetic pattern of alpine plants along latitude and longitude in Hengduan Mountains Region

To detect the horizontal pattern of phylogenetic structure shown by alpine plants, we measured phylogenetic structure using net related index(NRI) and net nearest taxon index(NTI), and analyzed the phylogenetic structure patterns of alpine plants along longitude, latitude and environmental gradients in the Hengduan Mountains Region(HDMR). Our results show that: 1) the phylogenetic structure tended to cluster with increasing latitude and longitude; 2) for NRI, latitude was closer related than longitude,while for NTI, longitude was closer related than latitude, though they both not significantly relate to NTI.The phylogenetic structure tended towards overdispersion in the southern HDMR, with good climate conditions of higher mean annual temperature and more mean annual precipitation. In contrast, with harsh climate conditions of lower mean annual temperature and less mean annual precipitation, the increasing environmental stress led to phylogenetic clustering in the northern HDMR. The results highlighted that in the alpine region of HDMR, environmental filters and geographical isolation had a great effect on the latitudinal and longitudinal alpine species distribution, respectively.

Are the cerrado and the seasonal forest woody floras assembled by different processes despite their spatial proximity?

Aims The Brazilian cerrado occupies land that could be occupied by seasonal forest,given current climatic conditions and their spatial proximity.Soil has been identified as one of the main determinants of cerrado and forest prevalence.We tested whether cerrado and seasonal forest woody floras were assembled by different processes.We postulated that soil nutrient availability would account for dif-ferences in the functional and phylogenetic structure of the cerrado and the seasonal forest.Methods In 1005×5 m plots distributed along cerrado and seasonal forest patches in south-eastern Brazil,we sampled five individuals with a basal diameter≥3 cm from 127 species and measured seven of their functional traits(plant height,basal area,tortuosity,leaf size,specific leaf area,leaf dry matter content,and leaf toughness).We constructed a phylogenetic tree and calculated the pairwise mean functional-phy-logenetic distances(MFPDs),an approach that accounts for functional and phylogenetic information both separately and combined.We also sampled soils to a depth of 5 cm in each plot and had their chem-ical and physical properties determined.We related the MFPD to soil properties and compared MFPD between cerrado and forest species.Important Findings Phylogenetic distances were higher than functional distances in both cerrado and seasonal forest communities,suggesting trait convergence in both environments.Irrespective of the importance given to functional or phylogenetic information,most of the com-munities in the cerrado and in the seasonal forest fell within the null expectation,implying either that multiple assembly processes can occur simultaneously along the gradient of soil fertility,or that not all important traits were included.MFPD was related to soil nutrient status when only functional distances were considered.In this case,MFPD was lower in the cerrado than in the forest,indi-cating that soil nutrient availability influenced plant traits,with the low-nutrient soils in the cerrado constraining the range of variation

Habitat fragmentation occurs worldwide and is regarded as a main cause of biodiversity loss. Understanding the impact of habitat fragmentation on community assembly and species coexistence is an important topic in community ecology and biodiversity conservation but has rarely been considered in previous studies. We therefore studied the shift of species and phylogenetic diversity during the transitions between different life stages of woody plants in the land-bridge island system of Thousand Island Lake, East China. The influence of island attributes on community assembly was also analyzed. Using the compared analysis with null models and NMDS, we found the divergent trends between the transitions from seedlings to saplings (SS) and from saplings to trees (ST). The divergence of plant community assembly in the same transition was also found due to the effects of island area and isolation by regression tree analysis. On the farer and larger islands, plant community is accumulated more species with distant phylogenetic relatedness in the SS transition. On the smaller islands the species with closer phylogenetic relatedness is clusted in the ST transition. These results highlight that besides the internal biotic and abiotic factors within communities, the external factors across habitats and the landscape-scale process are key drivers in shaping community assembly in fragmented systems.
