Unsuccessful letter–sound integration in english reading by native Chinese speakers: evidence from an event related potentials study

Integrating letters and sounds are essential for successful reading in alphabetic languages. It remains unclear if native speakers of non-alphabetic languages integrate letters and sounds in reading an alphabetic lan- guage in the same way as native alphabetic readers do. Chinese is a morpho-syllabic system （each character cor- responds to one syllable） and contrasts sharply with alphabetic languages such as english. Several fMRI studies have shown that native Chinese speakers apply their native language system to read english words. By using the cross- modal mismatch negativity （MMN） paradigm, we directly investigated letter-sound integration for reading in english among native Chinese speakers. To investigate the effect of native language background on letter-sound integration in second language reading, a group of native Korean english learners served as a comparison group. We compared MMN responses between an auditory only condition （only vowels presented） and two audiovisual conditions （AV0, vowel presented synchronously with the corresponding letter; AV200, the letter presented 200 ms before the corresponding vowel） for both native Chinese and native Korean speakers. Native Chinese speakers demonstrated significantly attenuated MMN amplitudes in audiovisual conditions compared with the auditory only condition, regardless of their phonological decoding speed. In con- trast, native Korean speakers showed amplified amplitude MMN in AV200 compared with that in the auditory only condition. The results suggest that native language may shape the brain responses of second language learners to reading a second language in the early stages. Native non- alphabetic language speakers may be unable to use visual information to facilitate their phonological processing in the early stage while naT：lye alphabetic language speakers are capable of integrating letter sounds automatically.

A Study on Senior High School Students＇ english reading Barriers and Strategies

Referring to the questionnaire surveys and literature materials, this paper tries to discuss the causes of high school students＇ english reading barriers and its possible strategies to improve their english reading ability. This paper used a questionnaire survey to collect data with 188 grade one high school students as research subject. The result shows english reading barriers are mainly divided into two parts, language factors and non-language factors. Language factors include vocabulary barriers, grammar barriers, discourse barriers and culture background barriers. Non-language factors mainly include psychological factors, reading habits, reading interest and reading strategies. It is suggested that joint efforts from teachers and students are needed to solve the reading barriers. Teachers should help students increase vocabulary accumulation, strengthen grammar knowledge, develop their discourse comprehension skills and teach culture knowledge in class. Students need to overcome psychological factors, develop good reading habits, do a series of trainings on reading, give immediate feedbacks and sum up reading experiences.

The Role of Input and Interaction in english reading of Grade One EFL Learners in an Open College

This paper analyzes the role of reading textbook(input) as well as interaction between grade one students and teachers in Guangwai’s Open College, aiming to seek for a tentative teaching method to improve reading comprehension of grade one EFL learners in the college. First, the features of input and interaction in the specific context were explored under the light of literature. Second, an experiment was carried on by comparing the comprehension results of three different groups of students under various conditions—a)simplified condition(SC), with modified lexical items and sentence structure; b)negotiated condition(NC), with no linguistic simplification but opportunity for students to interact with their teacher on the meaning of unfamiliar words and syntactic difficulties; c)unmodified condition(UC), with neither simplified input nor opportunity to negotiate with their teacher. The experiment reveals that some reading materials in the textbook is not suitable for "self-taught" students’ automatic development of language knowledge and, interactional negotiation is a more efficient method than input simplification of original input.

A Study on the Methodology of Inducing Students' Creativity in english reading Class

Explore of english reading strategies based on mental model pragmatic inference
