Record-high near-band-edge optical nonlinearities and two-level model correction of poled polymers by spectroscopic electromodulation and ellipsometry

The determination of nonlinearities near the band edge of organic and polymeric electro-optic(EO)materials is important from the viewpoint of molecular nonlinear optics(NLO)and photonic device *** on transmission-mode Stark effect electromodulation(EM)spectroscopy,we study the electric-field-induced changes in optical absorption and refraction of newly developed EO polymers from the visible to near-infrared(NIR)wavelengths and report record-high near-band-edge complex EO effects from poled thin *** ofΔn andΔk up to 10^(-3) and 10^(-2) are found at an applied electric field of 2.0×10^(5)-3.0×10^(5)V/*** study of linear optical properties of poled films by spectroscopic ellipsometry shows large polinginduced birefringence and a nearly two-fold increase in the extinction coefficients at the extraordinary *** the Kramers-Kronig analysis,we obtained the real and imaginary second-order nonlinear coefficients up to~3,500 and~5,600 pm/V,respectively,which are believed to be the highest NLO coefficients of poled polymers through the resonance *** approach goes beyond the previous works,applicable only to several discrete wavelengths,to a full-spectral analysis with independent verification of slab waveguide *** considering both the electroabsorption and electrorefraction effects,our study overcomes the limitation of the classic qualitative two-level model and provides a quantitative understanding of near-resonance optical nonlinearities of organic EO *** can inspire the exploration of high-speed,absorptive,or phase-shifting light-modulators using EO polymers for on-chip applications.

electro-optic(EO)crystals are important material for all-solid-state laser technology,which can be used to fabricate various laser modulators,such as EO switches,laser deflectors,and optical *** improvements in new high-efficiency EO crystal materials have held great significance to the development of laser *** tantalate niobate(KTN)is a popular multifunctional crystal because of its remarkable and excellent quadratic EO *** EO modulation technology offers numerous advantages,such as high efficiency,good stability,a quick response time,and inertia-free *** this paper,we summarize the research progress of KTN series crystals systemically,including the theoretical exploration on quadratic EO effect,solid-melt crystal growth technique,comprehensive physical characterization,new physical effect and mechanisms exploration,new EO devices development and *** EO modulation technique based on the Kerr effect of KTN series crystal offers obvious advantages in reducing the drive voltage and device size,which could better meet the developmental needs of future lasers with a wide wavelength,miniaturization,and *** may provide theoretical guidance and an experimental basis for the design and development of new EO crystal devices and promote the development of laser technology.

A polarization-maintaining （PM） fiber Mach-Zehnder （MZ） interferometer has been established to measure the EO effect of very thin film materials with optical anisotropy. Unlike a common MZ interferometer, all the components are connected via polarization-maintaining fibers. At the same time, a polarized DFB laser with a maximum power output of 10mW is adopted as the light source to induce a large extinction ratio. Here,we take it to determine the electro-optical coefficients of a very thin superlattice structure with GaAs, KTP, and GaN as comparative samples. The measured EO coefficients show good comparability with the others.

Electrically tunable silicon(Si) plasmonic phase modulators with nano-scale optical confinement are presented and analyzed in this study. The modulation is realized based on two mechanisms: free carrier plasma dispersion effect in Si and high electro-optic effect in polymer. The phase modulators can be found potential applications in optical telecommunication and interconnect.

Experimental investigation on the unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer on lithium niobate thin film

We design and fabricate an unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer(MZI)via electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma etching on lithium niobate thin *** single unbalanced MZI exhibits a maximum extinction ratio of 32.4 dB and a low extra loss of 1.14 dB at the telecommunication ***,tunability of the unbalanced MZI by harnessing the thermo-optic and electro-optic effect is investigated,achieving a linear tuning efficiency of 42.8 pm/℃ and 55.2 pm/V,*** demonstrated structure has applications for sensing and filtering in photonic integrated circuits.
