Role of cancer stem cell ecosystem on breast cancer metastasis and related mouse models

Breast cancer metastasis is responsible for most breast cancer-related deaths and is influenced by many factors within the tumor ecosystem,including tumor cells and microenvironment.Breast cancer stem cells(BCSCs)constitute a small population of cancer cells with unique characteristics,including their capacity for self-renewal and differentiation.Studies have shown that BCSCs not only drive tumorigenesis but also play a crucial role in promoting metastasis in breast cancer.The tumor microenvironment(TME),composed of stromal cells,immune cells,blood vessel cells,fibroblasts,and microbes in proximity to cancer cells,is increasingly recognized for its crosstalk with BCSCs and role in BCSC survival,growth,and dissemination,thereby influencing metastatic ability.Hence,a thorough understanding of BCSCs and the TME is critical for unraveling the mechanisms underlying breast cancer metastasis.In this review,we summarize current knowledge on the roles of BCSCs and the TME in breast cancer metastasis,as well as the underlying regulatory mechanisms.Furthermore,we provide an overview of relevant mouse models used to study breast cancer metastasis,as well as treatment strategies and clinical trials addressing BCSC-TME interactions during metastasis.Overall,this study provides valuable insights for the development of effective therapeutic strategies to reduce breast cancer metastasis.

Towards High-Performance Graph Processing: From a Hardware/Software Co-Design Perspective

Graph processing has been widely used in many scenarios,from scientific computing to artificial intelligence.Graph processing exhibits irregular computational parallelism and random memory accesses,unlike traditional workloads.Therefore,running graph processing workloads on conventional architectures(e.g.,CPUs and GPUs)often shows a significantly low compute-memory ratio with few performance benefits,which can be,in many cases,even slower than a specialized single-thread graph algorithm.While domain-specific hardware designs are essential for graph processing,it is still challenging to transform the hardware capability to performance boost without coupled software codesigns.This article presents a graph processing ecosystem from hardware to software.We start by introducing a series of hardware accelerators as the foundation of this ecosystem.Subsequently,the codesigned parallel graph systems and their distributed techniques are presented to support graph applications.Finally,we introduce our efforts on novel graph applications and hardware architectures.Extensive results show that various graph applications can be efficiently accelerated in this graph processing ecosystem.

Soil and vegetation water content identify the main terrestrial ecosystem changes

Environmental change is a consequence of many interrelated factors.How vegetation responds to natural and human activity still needs to be well establishe d,quantified and understood.Re cent satellite missions providing hydrologic and ecological indicators enable better monitoring of Earth system changes,yet there is no automatic way to address this issue directly from observations.Here,we develop an observation-based methodology to capture evidence of changes in global terrestrial ecosystems and attribute these changes to natural or anthropogenic activity.We use the longest time record of global microwave L-band soil moisture and vegetation optical depth as satellite data and build spatially explicit maps of change in soil and vegetation water content and biomass reflecting large ecosystem changes during the last decade,2010-20.Regions of prominent trends(from-8% to 9% per year) are observed,especially in humid and semi-arid climates.We further combine such trends with land cover change maps,vegetation greenness and precipitation variability to assess their relationship with major documented ecosystem changes.Several regions emerge from our results.They cluster changes according to human activity drivers,including deforestation(Amazon,Central Africa) and wildfires(East Australia),artificial reforestation(South-East China),abandonment of farm fields(Central Russia) and climate shifts related to changes in precipitation variability(East Africa,North America and Central Argentina).Using the high sensitivity of soil and vegetation water content to ecosystem changes,microwave satellite observations enable us to quantify and attribute global vegetation responses to climate or anthropogenic activities as a direct measure of environmental changes and the mechanisms driving them.

The microbiome contributes to multiple ecosystem functions and services through its interactions with a complex environment and other organisms.To date,however,most microbiome studies have been carried out on individual hosts or particular environmental compartments.This greatly limits a comprehensive understanding of the processes and functions performed by the microbiome and its dynamics at an ecosystem level.We propose that the theory and tools of ecosystem ecology be used to investigate the connectivity of microorganisms and their interactions with the biotic and abiotic environment within entire ecosystems and to examine their contributions to ecosystem services.Impacts of natural and anthropogenic stressors on ecosystems will likely cause cascading effects on the microbiome and lead to unpredictable outcomes,such as outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases or changes in mutualistic interactions.Despite enormous advances in microbial ecology,we are yet to study microbiomes of ecosystems as a whole.Doing so would establish a new framework for microbiome study:ecosystem Microbiome Science.The advent and application of molecular and genomic technologies,together with data science and modeling,will accelerate progress in this field.

ecosystem-driven karst carbon cycle and carbon sink effects

It is recognized that karst processes are actively involved in the current global carbon cycle based on twenty years research,and the carbon sink occurred in karst processes is possibly an important part of“missing sink”in global carbon cycle.In this paper,an overview is given on karst carbon cycle research,and influence factors,formed carbon pools(background carbon sink)and sink increase potentials of current karst carbon cycle are analyzed.Carbonate weathering could contribute to the imbalance item(BIM)and land use change item(ELUC)in the global carbon cycle model,owing to its uptake of both atmospheric CO_(2)(carbon sink effect)and CO_(2) produced by soil respiration(carbon source reduction effect).Karst carbon sink includes inorganic carbon sink resulted from hydrogeochemical process and organic carbon sink generated by aquatic photosynthetic DIC conversion,forming relatively stable river(reservoir)water body or sediment carbon sink.The sizes of both sinks are controlled by terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems,respectively.Desertification rehabilitation and carbon sequestration by aquatic plants are two effective ways to increase the carbon sink in karst area.It is estimated that the rate of carbon sink is at least 381000 t CO_(2)/a with vegetation restoration and afforestation in southwest China karst area,while the annual organic carbon sink generated by aquatic photosynthesis is about 84200 t C in the Pearl River Basin.The development of a soil CO_(2) based model for assessment of regional dissolution intensity will help to improve the estimation accuracy of carbon sink increase and potential,thus provide a more clear and efficient karst sink increase scheme and pathway to achieve the goals of“double carbon”.With the deep investigation on karst carbon cycle,mechanism and carbon sink effect,and the improvement of watershed carbon sink measurement methods and regional sink increase evaluation approaches.Karst carbon sink is expected to be included in the list of atmospheric CO_(2) sources/sinks of t

Simulating the impacts of fishing on central and eastern tropical Pacific ecosystem using multispecies size-spectrum model

The size-spectrum model has been considered a useful tool for understanding the structures of marine ecosystems and examining management implications for fisheries.Based on Chinese tuna longline observer data from the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and published data,we developed and calibrated a multispecies size-spectrum model of twenty common and commercially important species in this area.We then use the model to project the status of the species from 2016 to 2050 under five constant-fishing-mortality management scenarios:(1)F=0;(2)F=F_(recent),the average fishing mortality from 2013 to 2015;(3)F=0.5F_(recent);(4)F=2F_(recent) and(5)F=3F_(recent).Several ecological indicators were used to track the dynamics of the community structure under different levels of fishing,including the mean body weight,slope of community size spectra(Slope),and total biomass.The validation demonstrated that size-at-age data of nine main catch species between our model predictions and those empirical data from assessments by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission matched well,with the R^(2)>0.9.The direct effect of fishing was the decreasing abundance of large-sized individuals.The mean body weight in the community decreased by~1500 g(21%)by 2050 when F doubled from F_(recent) to 2F_(recent).The higher the fishing mortality,the steeper the Slope was.The projection also indicated that fishing impacts reflected by the total biomass did not increase proportionally with the increasing fishing mortality.The biomass of the main target tuna species was still abundant over the projection period under the recent fishing mortality,except Albacore tuna(Thunnus alalunga).For sharks and billfishes,their biomass remained at relatively higher levels only under the F=0 scenario.The results can serve as a scientific reference for alternative management strategies in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

Climate change is the phrase used to describe long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. Changes in the atmosphere and their interactions with diverse geologic, chemical, biological, and geographic variables are the main contributors to this cyclical adjustment of the Earth’s climate. Such changes may be induced purposefully, because of burning fossil fuels, clearing forests, and raising animals, or they may be natural, brought on by significant volcanic eruptions or variations in the sun’s activity. By significantly increasing the amount of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere, this heightens the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming. This work includes several additional theoretical and practical explanations of sustainable development. The theoretical work encompasses hundreds of researches that identify requirements for how development routes might satisfy sustainable development (SD) criteria using economic theory, complex systems approach, ecological science, and other techniques. The agreements made by the Parties in various nations across the world will consider a wide range of perspectives about what would be considered undesirable effects on the environment, the climate system, sustainability, economic growth, or food production.

Is the Sundarbans of Bangladesh in a State of Pollution?

The Sundarbans is the world’s most extensive natural mangrove forest and home to various natural resources. The population in the vicinity has increased, causing more dependency on the resources of the Sundarbans. The increasing industrialization, urbanization, aquaculture, intensive agricultural practices, seaports, tourism facilities, and so on in the peripheral areas of the Sundarbans have made significant changes in the surrounding and upstream land uses of the Sundarbans. This situation may have detrimental influences on the ecosystem components of the Sundarbans. Therefore, it is highly demanded to prepare a piece of baseline information or database of different sources of pollution and their present status in the various components of the Sundarbans. This effort helps to identify issues and concerns, determine the key elements of the ecosystem to monitor the level or overall quality of the Sundarbans ecosystem. The present study systematically collects the potential sources of pollution, types, and current levels in the ecosystem components of the Sundarbans using academic databases, libraries, and online resources. Discharge of industrial waste into water, soil and air, heavy metal pollution, use of agrochemicals, oil (refined and crude) pollution, plastic materials from urban areas, and tourism are the major issues and concerns related to the sustainability of the Sundarbans ecosystem. The air quality of the Sundarbans is in good condition with 0 - 50 AQI of Bangladesh. While BOD, COD, TDS, TSS varied from 2.0 to 3.8 mg/L, 21.6 to 416 mg/L, 146.9 to 24,100 mg/L and 54 to 155 mg/L, respectively. Soil EC, organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus ranged from 3.01 - 5.82 mS/cm, 1.41% - 2.69%, 0.51 - 1.05 mg/g, and 0.32 - 0.51 mg/g respectively. The air, water and soil quality parameters varied with the sites and seasons and not much at the state of contamination. Behavioral traits of species can play an important role in the functioning of the ecosystem and in evolving behavioural adaptations to survive according to environmental conditions.This note documents evidence of adding a rare observation by providing photographic evidence of the entanglement of a carcass of a juvenile Black Kite(Milvus migrans)from a nest and the use of nest by an adult individual,guarding the carcass.Documenting such behavior contributes to our understanding of the natural history and management of native species in an urban environment.Further,scientific studies/observations are needed to be conducted to reach some conclusion as to why species perform such behaviour.
