Climate change is the phrase used to describe long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. Changes in the atmosphere and their interactions with diverse geologic, chemical, biological, and geographic variables are the main contributors to this cyclical adjustment of the earth’s climate. Such changes may be induced purposefully, because of burning fossil fuels, clearing forests, and raising animals, or they may be natural, brought on by significant volcanic eruptions or variations in the sun’s activity. By significantly increasing the amount of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere, this heightens the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming. This work includes several additional theoretical and practical explanations of sustainable development. The theoretical work encompasses hundreds of researches that identify requirements for how development routes might satisfy sustainable development (SD) criteria using economic theory, complex systems approach, ecological science, and other techniques. The agreements made by the Parties in various nations across the world will consider a wide range of perspectives about what would be considered undesirable effects on the environment, the climate system, sustainability, economic growth, or food production.

Coal measure metallogeny:Metallogenic system and implication for resource and environment

Coal,coal measure gas,coal conversion to oil and gas,and coal-based new materials are reliable guarantees for stable energy supply and economic and social development in China.The coal-dominated resource endowment and the economic and social development stage determine the irreplaceable position of coal resources in the energy system.Coal measure resources,including aggregated or dispersed solids,liquid and gaseous multitype energies,and metal as well as nonmetallic minerals,are the products of multisphere interaction and metallogenetic materials generation,migration,and accumulation.Coal measures record rich deep-time geological information of transitional and terrestrial peat bogs,which is a crucial carrier to reveal ecosystem evolution,significant organic carbon sequestration,atmospheric O_(2)/CO_(2)variation,and wildfire events.Coal measure evolution is accompanied by the migration and transformation of various materials during diagenesis-metamorphism,forming differentiated coal compositions besides properties and various mineral resources in its adjacent strata.The enrichment condition,occurrence state,and separation potential are the premise for level-by-level use and efficient development of coal measure resources.Coal measure metallogeny is based on the metallogenic system of multiple energy and mineral resources in coal measures and their environmental effects.Fully understanding coal measure metallogeny is beneficial for promoting the coal transition from fuel to raw materials and strengthening its attribute of multiple mineral resources.The metallogeny comprises various aspects,including:(1)the symbiosis mechanism,co-exploration and co-mining conditions of various resources;(2)the source-sink system of ore-forming materials;(3)the differential carbon accumulation and hydrogen enrichment effect;(4)organic(coal and hydrocarbon)and inorganic(mineral)interactions;and(5)combination of minerals naturally enrichment during the metallogenic process and artificial enrichment during the ore processing process.Th

Understanding changes in earth's past can provide valuable insights into prediction of its future.An example is the interactions between the internal and external spheres of earth.The cyclical northward breakup-drift of Gondwana,driven by the opening and closure of Proto-,Paleo-,and Neo-Tethyan oceans,facilitated the transfer of landmasses from the southern to the northern hemisphere,traversing the tropic region.We have observed a compelling correlation between episodic increases in landmass area within the tropic regions(those lying at less than 20°latitude)and a subsequent temperature decrease during the three major glacial periods in the last 500 million years.This phenomenon can be attributed to low latitude regions receiving more solar energy influx on earth's surface than high latitude areas.In addition,an increase of landmass in tropic regions(low latitude)attenuates the net energy absorption by the earth's surface,consequently impeding the conduction and convection of absorbed energy toward the poles.The result is a decrease in global surface temperature.The tropic regions,benefiting from abundant sunlight,create an ideal environment for the proliferation of marine plankton species.These species are important in the generation of organic-rich sediment.Massive biological debris is therefore deposited on continental margins when a continent drifts across the tropic region.This creates favorable conditions for future hydrocarbon and reservoir formation.Northward subduction of organic-rich sediments during the closure of the Tethyan oceans results in the generation of mafic arc magmas with low oxygen fugacity.This chemical environment helps the mineralization of reduced-type ore deposits such as tungsten,tin,and lithium.Subducted-driven plate tectonics in the Tethys realm changes the distribution of oceans and landmass,subsequently affecting the balance and distribution of solar energy across earth's surface.These changes trigger consequential environmental shifts which in turn,impact the composition of rock

Energy is the basis of human development and the impetus of society progress. There are three sources of energy: energy of celestial body outside the earth, the earth energy and energy of interaction between the earth and other celestial bodies. Meanwhile, there are three scales of co-evolution: the evolution of the Sun-earth-Moon system on an ultra-long time scale has provided energy sources and extra-terrestrial environmental conditions for the formation of the earth system;the evolution of the earth system on a long time scale has provided the material preconditions such as energy resources and suitable sphere environment for life birth and the human development;on a short time scale, the development of human civilization makes the human circle break through the earth system, expanding the extraterrestrial civilization. With the co-evolution, there are three processes in the carbon cycle: inorganic carbon cycle, short-term organic carbon cycle and long-term organic carbon cycle, which records human immoderate utilization of fossil energy and global sphere reforming activities, breaking the natural balance and closed-loop path of the carbon cycle of the earth, causing the increase of greenhouse gases and global climate change, affecting human happiness and development. The energy transition is inevitable, and carbon neutrality must be realized. Building the green energy community is a fundamental measure to create the new energy system under carbon neutrality target. China is speeding up its energy revolution and developing a powerful energy nation. It is necessary to secure the cornerstone of the supply of fossil energy and forge a strong growing pole for green and sustainable development of new energy. The Ordovician-Silurian transition(OST)hosted profound and frequent changes in the atmospheric-terres trial-oceanic-climatic system(ATOCS).Previous studies have found contrasting stages for such changes,primarily based on hiatus-interrupted sections.However,the dominant driving factors and mechanisms reconciling such frequent changes remain controversial.Mercury isotopes,which undergo both massdependent and mass-independent fractionation,can provide critical insights into the deep-time ATOCSs,especially for those impacted by large igneous provinces(LIPs)events.Here,we build a highresolution multi-proxy record of Hg(concentrations and isotopic compositions)combined with organic carbon isotopes(δ^(13)Corg)and whole-rock geochemical data(including trace elements and phosphorus)from continuous cores in the Yangtze Platform,South China.Our data,combined with reported ones,indicate the occurrence of LIP eruptions against localized volcanism,and four successive,yet contrasting stages of ATOCSs during the OST.Moreover,we identified the coupling between two-pulse LIP magmatism and extreme ATOCSs,each with special pCO_(2),weathering rate,primary productivity,redox condition,climatic mode,and biotic evolution.For stage I,the first pulse of LIP magmatism triggered global warming,enhanced terrestrial weathering,oceanic acidification,eutrophication,anoxia,P recycling,and thereby widespread deposition of black shales.During stage II,the Hirnantian glaciation and oxygenation arose from the intense chemical weathering and black shale deposition of stage I;slashed terrestrial weathering and oceanic oxygenation facilitated CO_(2) accumulation.In stage III,another pulse of LIP magmatism triggered the de-glaciation,and the ATOCS was largely similar to that of stage I.This led to another round of oxygenation and positive d13Corg excursion in stage IV.Compared with the environmental pressure by the peculiar ATOCS of each stage,their transitions might have been more devastating in triggering the prolonged Late Ordovician Mass Extinction

The sudden outbreak of the Coronavirus disease(COVID-19)swept across the world in early 2020,triggering the lockdowns of several billion people across many countries,including China,Spain,India,the U.K.,Italy,France,Germany,Brazil,Russia,and the U.S.The transmission of the virus accelerated rapidly with the most confirmed cases in the U.S.,India,Russia,and Brazil.In response to this national and global emergency,the NSF Spatiotemporal Innovation Center brought together a taskforce of international researchers and assembled implementation strategies to rapidly respond to this crisis,for supporting research,saving lives,and protecting the health of global citizens.This perspective paper presents our collective view on the global health emergency and our effort in collecting,analyzing,and sharing relevant data on global policy and government responses,human mobility,environmental impact,socioeconomical impact;in developing research capabilities and mitigation measures with global scientists,promoting collaborative research on outbreak dynamics,and reflecting on the dynamic responses from human societies.

The standard solar model proposes that the solar luminosity was 30%lower than the present level at 4.5 billion years ago(Ga).At low solar radiation,the climate model predicts that the earth should have been completely covered by ice in the first 2 billion years,i.***.in the snowball earth climate mode,when the atmospheric CO2 content was at the present level.However,snowball earth condition is inconsistent with various sedimentological,paleontological,and geochemical evidence.Such controversy is collectively known as the Taint Young Sun,(FYS)paradox.Though various models have been proposed,the FYS paradox has not yet been resolved.In this study,we develop a model by considering the ocean-atmosphere coupling to show that high atmospheric CO2 level could be sustained at low seawater pH.The modeling result indicates that 0.1 bar atmospheric CO2 level that was required to prevent snowball earth in early Archean could be sustained at seawater pH of 6.8-7.2.Although the absence of siderite in Archean paleosols has been used to argue against high atmospheric CO2 level,we suggest that siderite precipitation in paleosols was not controlled by the atmospheric CO2 level alone.Instead,siderite could precipitate in anoxic conditions with various amount of CO2 in the atmosphere,suggesting siderite cannot be used to reconstruct the atmospheric CO2 level.Therefore,the new model suggests that the snowball earth condition could be prevented by the coupling of atmosphere and ocean systems,and thus the emergence of the ocean in the very beginning of earth evolution might be the key to the subsequence evolution of habitability.

The accumulation of oxygen is one of the most important characteristics that distinguish earth from other planets in the solar system,which is also considered to be the key factor influencing the birth and evolution of complex life forms.The oxygenation process of the earth surface has long been viewed to be episodic with two critical intervals occurring in the early Paleoproterozoic(2.45-2.10 Ga)and the late Neoproterozoic(0.80-0.54 Ga),with a 1.3-billion-year-long low oxygen period in between.Recently,increasing independent works carried out by different scientific teams in the Yanliao Basin,North China are demonstrating that the atmospheric oxygen concentrations had reached>4%PAL(present atmospheric levels)at least during 1.59-1.56,1.44-1.43,and 1.40-1.36 Ga.These estimated values are higher than the previously recommended values ofearth surface system.

Emergence refers to the existence or formation of collective behaviors in complex systems.Here,we develop a theoretical framework based on the eigen microstate theory to analyze the emerging phenomena and dynamic evolution of complex system.In this framework,the statistical ensemble composed of M microstates of a complex system with N agents is defined by the normalized N×M matrix A,whose columns represent microstates and order of row is consist with the time.The ensemble matrix A can be decomposed as■,where r=min(N,M),eigenvalueσIbehaves as the probability amplitude of the eigen microstate U_I so that■and U_I evolves following V_I.In a disorder complex system,there is no dominant eigenvalue and eigen microstate.When a probability amplitudeσIbecomes finite in the thermodynamic limit,there is a condensation of the eigen microstate UIin analogy to the Bose–Einstein condensation of Bose gases.This indicates the emergence of U_I and a phase transition in complex system.Our framework has been applied successfully to equilibrium threedimensional Ising model,climate system and stock markets.We anticipate that our eigen microstate method can be used to study non-equilibrium complex systems with unknown orderparameters,such as phase transitions of collective motion and tipping points in climate systems and ecosystems.
