The goal of this contribution is to explain the analogy between combinatorial dyson-schwinger equations and inductive data types to a readership of mathematical physicists. The connection relies on an interpretation of combinatorial dyson-schwinger equations as fixpoint equations for polynomial functors （established elsewhere by the author, and summarised here）, combined with the now-classical fact that polynomial functors provide semantics for inductive types. The paper is expository, and comprises also a brief introduction to type theory.

Bethe-Salpeter equations: mesons beyond the rainbow-ladder truncation

Based on the dyson-schwinger equations with "rainbow" approximation, the fully dressed confining quark propagator is investigated, and then the mass functions A(q) and B(q) are obtained in the approximation. Using the resulting A(q) and B (q),the pion decay constant fis predicted. A comparison of the predicted fwith it’s value of experimental measurement is also performed. A great agreement is obtained. With the predicted fand values of Goldstone Boson masses measured by experiments the current masses of light quarks and in-medium Goldstone bosons are obtained.

We investigate masses of light mesons from a coupled system of dyson–schwinger （DSE） and Bethe– Salpeter equations （BSE）,taking into account dominant non-Abelian,sub-leading Abelian,and dominant pion cloud contributions to the dressed quark-gluon vertex.The axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity preserving Bethe-Salpeter kernel is constructed and the spectrum of light mesons calculated.Our model goes significantly beyond the rainbow-ladder.We find that sub-leading Abelian corrections are further dynamically suppressed,and that our results supersede early qualitative predictions from simple truncation schemes.

We study the properties of two-flavor quark matter in the dyson-schwinger model and investigate the possible consequences for hybrid neutron stars,with particular regard to the two-solar-mass limit.We find that with some extreme values of the model parameters,the mass fraction of two-flavor quark matter in heavy neutron stars can be as high as 30 percent and the possible energy release during the conversion from nucleonic neutron stars to hybrid stars can reach 1052 erg.

We give a direct method for calculating the quark-number susceptibility at finite chemical potential and zero temperature. In this approach the quark-number susceptibility is totally determined by G[μ]（p）（the dressed quark propagator at finite chemical potential μ）. By applying the general result in our previous study [Phys. Rev. C 71 （2005） 015205, 034901, 73 （2006） 016004 ] G[μ]（p） is calculated from the model quark propagator proposed by Pagels and Stokar [Phys. Rev. D 20 （1979） 2947]. The full analytic expression of the quark-number susceptibility at finite μ and zero T is obtained.

Using lattice configurations for quantum chromodynamics(QCD)generated with three domain-wall fermions at a physical pion mass,we obtain a parameter-free prediction of QCD’s renormalisation-group-invariant process-independent effective charge,α^(k2).Owing to the dynamical breaking of scale invariance,evident in the emergence of a gluon mass-scale,m0=0.43(1)GeV,this coupling saturates at infrared momenta:α^(0)/π=0.97(4).Amongst other things:α^(k2)is almost identical to the process-dependent(PD)effective charge defined via the Bjorken sum rule;and also that PD charge which,employed in the one-loop evolution equations,delivers agreement between pion parton distribution functions computed at the hadronic scale and experiment.The diversity of unifying roles played byα^(k^2)suggests that it is a strong candidate for that object which represents the interaction strength in QCD at any given momentum scale;and its properties support a conclusion that QCD is a mathematically well-defined quantum field theory in four dimensions.

A symmetry-preserving continuum approach to the two valence-body bound-state problem is used to calculate the valence,glue and sea distributions within the pion;unifying them with,inter alia,electromagnetic pion elastic and transition form factors.The analysis reveals the following momentum fractions at the scale ζ2:=2GeV:〈xvalence〉=0.48(3),〈xglue〉=0.41(2),〈xsea〉=0.11(2);and despite hardening induced by the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking,the valence-quark distribution function,q^π(x),exhibits the x≈1 behaviour predicted by quantum chromodynamics(QCD).After evolution to ζ=5.2 GeV,the prediction for q^π(x)matches that obtained using lattice-regularised QCD.This confluence should both stimulate improved analyses of existing data and aid in planning efforts to obtain new data on the pion distribution functions.
