Feng Zhi 冯至（1905-93） was not only one of the founders of German Studies in China, but he also was an important scholar of the Tang dynasty poet, du fu 杜甫（712-70）. The present essay attempts to analyze Feng Zhi＇s ＂coming of age＂ by using du fu as a case study for the dialogue between the modem and Western-educated intellectuals on the one hand, and the twentieth-century political and nativist movements of China on the other. Feng＇s admiration for du fu prompted him to write a biography for this precursor poet, this ＂Sage in Poetry＂（shisheng 诗圣）, which was not only a record of his life, but also a mirror that reflects Feng＇s own spiritual transformation from a student of Western romanticism, individualism, and existentialism, to, in his own words, a ＂mouthpiece of the people.＂

The aim of this paper is to use a new vision in interpreting du fu＇s disease poem in order to build a more profound interpretation in the tradition of Chinese Lyricism. As the illness experiences are irreplaceable and the disease poems expressing clear self-image of the poet, we attempt to explore the unique illness experiences to uncover the lyrical self＇ in du fu＇s poems. The perception of the world of the poets suffering from illness would be different from the past while they were healthy, and thus they were experiencing a new sense of ＂space＂ through replacing the ordinary sense of space. This paper is divided into three parts： the first part is to interpret the new sense of space that is exhibiting features of anxiety caused by the state of imprisoned and the lost of mobility in life that is experienced by du fu＇s while he was sick. The second part of this study attempts to switch the perspective of du fu＇s disease poems that constructed a new sense of space by the action of＂ascending＂ in order to inspect whether the patient was able to overcome his anxiety while standing on a higher plane. The third part of this paper is to study the posture of＂lying＂, examining du fu expression of space while suffering from illness and had to stay at a lower position, and his perception of the space while suffering from chronic illness.

Bashu culture has an important position in Chinese culture. du fu's poems on the theme of Bashu account for a considerable portion of his poems, due to his long-term stay in Bashu and the vital effects of Bashu culture had on him. The unique Bashu culture enriched his creativity, and greatly expanded his poetic space. du fu's Bashu poems show the natural scenery, human geography, local customs and practices, and the cultural personality of the Bashu people. In addition, du fu combined organically his care for the fate of his nation and the people with Bashu culture, to realize more abundant and profound space of his poems.

关于杜甫的道教信仰是昙花一现还是至死不衰，20世纪七八十年代曾有过激烈争论，经过学界几十年的研讨，目前对杜甫道教思想的认识已变得愈发公允全面。和同时代人一样，杜甫的思想亦呈现出儒释道三教合一的特色，道教思想是其思想的重要组成部分。除了时代风气的熏染和李白的影响外，通过《唐故范阳太君卢氏墓志》中隐含的线索可知，由卢氏家族传入杜氏家族的天师道信仰传统极有可能是杜甫道教思想的直接来源之一。此外杜审言名列“方外十友”，与司马承祯等著名道士交往密切，其道教信仰亦对杜甫产生了直接影响。明了杜甫道教信仰的家庭因素，有助于对《丈人山》《存殁口号》《壮游》《冬日洛城北谒玄元皇帝庙》《朝献太清宫赋》等诗文的深入理解，从而扭转和修正杜诗旧注中的种种误解和歧见。
