Atropine 0.01% eye drops slow myopia progression: a systematic review and Meta-analysis

AIM: To evaluate the effects of atropine 0.01% on slowing myopia progression. METHODS: We searched for relevant studies in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Ovid, CBM, CNKI, VIP and Wan Fang Data in Chinese. A supplementary search was conducted in OpenGrey(System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe), the ISRCTN registry, Clinical Trials.gov, and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform(ICTRP) from the dates of inception to June 30, 2018. RESULTS: Seven randomized controlled trials(RCTs) with a total of 1079 subjects were included(505 in the atropine 0.01% group and 574 in the control group). The results showed that the atropine 0.01% group exhibited significantly greater control of axial growth than the control group (MD=-0.12, 95%CI(-0.19,-0.06))There was also a statistically significant difference between the atropine 0.01% and control groups in the changes in axial length [MD=-0.14, 95%CI(-0.25,-0.03)], but the quality of evidence was low. There were no significant differences between the atropine 0.01% and control groups in the overall effect with respect to diopter value, change in diopter, distance vision and intraocular pressure (MD=0.08, 95%CI(-0.27, 0.42);MD=0.09, 95%CI(-0.17, 0.36);MD=-0.01, 95%CI(-0.02, 0.00);MD=0.08, 95%CI(-0.56,0.40))The sensitivity analysis showed that the conclusion of the Meta-analysis is relatively stable. With respect to adverse events, there were significant differences between the atropine 0.01% and control groups (OR=0.26, 95%CI(0.11, 0.61))CONCLUSION: Based on the available evidence, atropine 0.01% eye drops offer benefits in controlling axial growth and safety without causing significant differences in diopter values, distance vision and intraocular pressure.

ADMM-based Distributed Algorithm for Economic Dispatch in Power Systems With Both Packet drops and Communication Delays

By virtue of alternating direction method of multipliers(ADMM), Newton-Raphson method, ratio consensus approach and running sum method, two distributed iterative strategies are presented in this paper to address the economic dispatch problem(EDP) in power systems. Different from most of the existing distributed ED approaches which neglect the effects of packet drops or/and time delays, this paper takes into account both packet drops and time delays which frequently occur in communication networks. Moreover, directed and possibly unbalanced graphs are considered in our algorithms, over which many distributed approaches fail to converge. Furthermore, the proposed schemes can address the EDP with local constraints of generators and nonquadratic convex cost functions, not just quadratic ones required in some existing ED approaches. Both theoretical analyses and simulation studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Meta analysis about the efficacy and safety of anti-ocular hypertension eye drops without benzalkonium chloride

Objective:To explore the safety and efficacy of eye drops without benzalkonium chloride(BAK)in treating glaucoma and ocular hypertension.Methods:The clinical case-control literatures about eye drops without BAK treating glaucoma and ocular hypertension were retrieved in PubMed,EMBASE,Cochrane and Chinese Biological and Medical database.Mela 5.0 software was used to analyze the literatures.Results:Five clinical control studies were included.The results indicated both eye drops could lower the intraocular pressure,and the intraocular pressurelowering difference between two eye drops was 0.07 mmHg(95%CI:0.04,0.19)(P>0.05).Two adverse reactions occurred more were conjunctival injection(10.78%)and allergic conjunctivitis(4.78%).The odd ratio of two eye drops occurring conjunctival injection and allergic conjunctivitis was 0.67(95%CI,0.25,1.10)and 0.82(95%CI,0.09,1.54),respectively(Pdrops with or without BAK in lowering intraocular pressure.but the latter is of higher safety.In consideration of the relatively small sample size of this research,more high-quality clinical research contrasts are needed as evidence.

Effects of WH-1 and WH-2 eye drops on experimental allergic uveitis(FAU)in rabbits induced by bovine serum albumin were clinically and pathologically observed in comparisonwith local drops of dexamethasone used as positive control.The results showed that WH-2 obvi-ously inhibited the inflammatory reactions while WH-1 did not.Protein concenwation in the aqueoushumor of WH-2-treated group of rabbits was 9.24±2.34mg/ml,which was notably lower(Pdrops was confimed pathologically.This study indicates that WH-2 has a positiveantiphlogistic effect on EAU in rabbits.

Background:Dry eye is a multifactor disease of the tear film and ocular surface that substantially affects quality of life.Case presentation:Dobesilate administered as eye drops was well tolerated and effective in treating both the objective signs and subjective symptoms of dry eye disease in this 2-week study.Conclusion:To the best of our knowledge,this is the first clinical report of using dobesilate in eye drops.Dobesilate may provide a novel approach to treating drying diseases of the eye.

The ability to control surface wettability and liquid spreading on textured surfaces is of interest for extensive applications.Soft materials have prominent advantages for producing the smart coatings with multiple functions for strain sensing.Here,we report a simple method to prepare flexible hydrophobic smart coatings using graphene-polymer films.Arrays of individual patterns in the films were created by laser engraving and controlled the contact angle of small drops by pinning the contact lines in a horizontal tensile range of 0-200%.By means of experiments and model,we demonstrate that the ductility of drops is relied on the height-to-spacing ratio of the individual pattern and the intrinsic contact angle.Moreover,the change of drop size was utilized to measure the applied strain and liquid viscosity,enabling a strain sensitivity as high as 1068μm2/%.The proposed laser-etched stretchable graphene-polymer composite has potential applications in DNA microarrays,biological assays,soft robots,and so on.

The Causes of Distress in Paediatric Outpatients Receiving Dilating drops

Background/aims: Paediatric outpatients are often dilated with cyclopentolate drops. These cause discomfort and distress, which may impede subsequent examination. We aimed to determine the distress caused by cyclopentolate drops, and other factors in the clinic environment. Methods: Over an 8 week period, questionnaires were issued to guardians of all paediatric outpatients aged under 10 years receiving cyclopentolate. The childrens’distress was graded on a scale of 1 - 10 (1 = no distress, 10 = severe distress). Waiting time and ease of examination were recorded. Data was analysed using Stata statistics, and significant differences were reported at the P < 0.05 level. Results: The 72 children were grouped as under 4 years (n = 43, Group A), aged 4 - 7 years (n = 19, Group B), and aged 7-10 years (n = 10, Group C). Median distress levels at home (baseline), on arrival, on dilation, and on examination were as follows: Group A;1, 2, 7, 6 respectively;Group B;1, 1, 6, 2 and Group C;1, 1, 4.5, 1. All age groups were significantly more distressed on examination compared to baseline. Distress scores on examination were significantly greater for Group A, in keeping with the greatest number of suboptimal examinations. Guardians reported that a prolonged waiting time and bright examination lights also contributed to distress. Conclusions: This study confirms that cyclopentolate causes significant distress in young children, and in 45% of very young children, the examination is difficult. Proxymetacaine prior to cyclopentolate is a possible solution, but other distressing factors should also be addressed for optimal outcomes.

Validation for Microbial Limit Test Method of Compound Yu E Nose drops

[Objectives] This study was conducted to establish a method for microbial limit test of Compound Yu E Nose drops.[Methods] According to the Chinese Pharmacopoei (General Rules in the fourth part of the 2015 edition),the microbial limit test method for Compound Yu E Nose drops was verified.[Results] Compound Yu E Nose drops has a strong inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis,and the inhibitory activity was significantly eliminated after increasing the diluent (1∶ 20).The recoveries were all in the range of 0.5-2.0 when the total quantities of aerobic microbes were determined by the dilution method (1∶ 20).When the total quantities of mould and yeast were determined by the conventional method,the recoveries were both in the range of 0.5-2.0.When examining control bacteria,Escherichia coli,S.aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa can all be detected in the test groups by the test liquid dilution method.[Conclusions] For Compound Yu E Nose drops,the total quantities of aerobic microbe can be counted by the dilution method;the quantities of mould and yeast can be examined by the conventional plate method;and the conventional method can be used for control microbe examination.

Turned Trochoidal Disturbance on a Liquid Jet Surface

This paper shows that a turned trochoidal function disturbance may lead to peripheral drops production. The resulting model is used to describe that a turned trochoidal disturbance leads to peripheral drops production on the liquid jet surface without the necessity for superimposed disturbances. The trochoid is a non-unique parametric function. Only non-unique parametric functions disturbances may lead to peripheral drops production. The trochoidal function disturbance is decomposed to Fourier series. Every Fourier element receives an amplification factor in accordance to the Rayleigh inviscid jet model. Peripheral drops are received on the jet surface. The paper shows that all trochoidal disturbance functions, prolate cycloid, cycloid and curtate cycloid have a capability of peripheral drops producing. A limited capability of peripheral drops production is introduced for the trochoidal curtate cycloid. Produced drops size are reduced for increasing the jet velocity and wave number. Smaller drops are also received by transition from the prolate cycloid to curtate cycloid disturbance.

Stacking-faults-free zinc blende GaAs/AlGaAs axial heterostructure nanowires during vapor-liquid-solid growth

Pure zinc blende structure GaAs/AlGaAs axial heterostructure nanowires （NWs） are grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition on GaAs（111） B substrates using Au-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Al adatom enhances the influence of diameters on NWs growth rate. NWs are grown mainly through the contributions from the direct impingement of the precursors onto the alloy droplets and not so much from adatom diffusion. The results indicate that the droplet acts as a catalyst rather than an adatom collector.
