Assessment of the Trend, Cause and Effect of Deforestation Using GIS and Remote Sensing in Goba district, Bale Zone, South Eastern Ethiopia

The conversion of forested areas to non-forest land was a series problem in study area of Goba district. The objectives of this study were to assess the trends, causes and effects of deforestation in Goba district, Bale zone, Ethiopia. Descriptive research method was employed to achieve these stated objectives. Satellite image of the three times and socio-economic survey were the main data sources for this study. ERDAS imagine 9.2 and ArcGIS 10 tools were applied for land use and land cover type classification, and analysis and mapping. These land use land and over change data were obtained from USGS. Socio-economic data collected through questionnaires, focus group discussions and interviews on the causes and impacts of land use and land cover change were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS software and content analysis for qualitative data. These analyzed data were expressed in percent and in words. The result shows that there was variation in the extent of land use and land cover change among different categories/classes at different study periods. Open area and Bush land showed decreasing change during first period of comparison and increasing change in the second period of comparison. In contrast, agricultural area, Bale temperate vegetation and built up area showed increasing. Built up area, agricultural area and Bale temperate vegetation increased by 80.05, 15.84, and 7.40 percent respectively, however, open area, grassland, forest land and bush land decreased by 1.58, 1.21, 0.97, and 0.28 percent per year for the last 29 years respectively. In general, in study district forest cover was 50.87% of the total area in 1986 and decreased to 36.57% in 2015 whereas agricultural area was increased from 3.45% to 19.28% respectively. This implies an increasing agricultural area at the expense of other land use cover categories, particularly natural forest. Social Dynamics of Ebola Virus Disease: A Case of Bundibugyo district, Uganda

Background: Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) presents with a high global mortality and is known to be a highly infectious disease with devastating and gendered effects on the social fabric, yet most of the science has focused on the disease’s biology. However, little has been documented with regard to the gender and social aspects of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in two sub counties (Kikyo and Bundibugyo Town Council) in Bundibugyo district in Western Uganda. The study was set to examine the gender differences in the level of knowledge, attitudes and perceptions about EVD. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional design using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A structured questionnaire was administered to 254 respondents, 50% of whom were women. Simple random sampling was used to select the participants. Questionnaire data were analysed using SPSS at univariate and bivariate levels. Qualitative methods such as key informant interviews (with 6 participants) and Focus Group Discussions (three, one with men alone, another with women alone and the last one with both men and women) were also used to collect additional information from participants. Results: The findings indicated that socio-demographically, the majority (35%) of the respondents were aged between 20 and 29 years, 53% of whom were females. More women (about 56%) compared to men (44%) attained secondary education while more men (about 51% versus 49% of the women) reported that they were married. In terms of religion, the majority of the survey participants were Catholics (59% females and 49% males). With regard to communities’ knowledge about EVD, there was no significant relationship between men and women in terms of prior knowledge about EVD, risk factors and control measures. However, slightly more males (about 51%) than females (49%) had heard about EVD and more males (about 52%) than females (48%) admitted that they were at risk of contracting the disease. Evaluating Land Use/Land Cover Change and Its Socioeconomic Implications in Agarfa district of Bale Zone, Southeastern Ethiopia

A systematic analysis of land use/cover change is so decisive to exactly understand the extent of change and take essential measures to curb down the rate of changes and protect the land cover resources sustainably. This land use/land cover change study was conducted in Agarfa district of Bale zone, Oromia Regional State, Southeastern Ethiopia. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the trends, drivers and its socio-economic and environmental implication in study area. A descriptive research method was employed to achieve the intended objectives of the study. In the three years (1976, 1995, and 2014) Landsat Satellite images and socio-economic survey were the main data sources for this study. ERDAS Imagine and Arch-GIS tools were used to classify and generate land use/land cover maps of the study area. Survey questionnaires, key informant interviews, and field observation were employed to obtain information on drivers and its socio-economic and environmental implication in the district. The results show that the land use/land cover of the study area had changed dramatically during the period of 38 years. A rapid loss of forest land and shrub land cover in the landscape took place between 1976 and 2014. Conversely, agriculture and grazing lands were increased by 30% and 42% respectively at the expense of the lost land use/land cover types. Forest land is the most converted cover type during the entire study period. In the 38 years, forest lands diminished by over 65% of the original forest cover that was existed at the base year (1976). Local climate change, declining agricultural productivity and livestock quantity and quality and scarcity of fuel wood and constructional materials were some of the socio-economic and livelihood impacts of land use and land cover change of the study area. Thus, this finding affords information to land users and policy makers on extent of the change and social forces leading to this changes and its subsequent implication on local socio-economic and environmental conditions of

Prospects and Challenges of Village Land Forest Reserves Management in Mbarali district, Tanzania

Prospects and challenges of Village Lands Forest Reserves (VLFRs) in Mbarali district, southern Tanzania were investigated. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys, in-depth key informant interviews, physical field visits and documentary reviews. A total of 44 subjects were involved in the study. SPSS, Microsoft Excel and content analysis were used in data analysis. Findings indicated that inadequate capacity building, passive community participation and involvement in VLFRs management fostered the continued forest degradation and deforestation in the study area. It was further observed that on average 2.04 ha of forest was being lost every year through anthropogenic activities, mainly farm expansion, charcoal business and firewood. In order to achieve VLFRs sustainability, the study recommends improvement of relationship and coordination among VLFRs key stakeholders, participatory preparation of forest management plans, enforcement of community forest management bylaws, and use of energy saving stoves to reduce overdependence on forests as source of energy.

The Evaluation of Water Treatment Methods Utilized among Households in Kyegegwa district, Uganda

Introduction: The Health sector continues to prioritize interventions defined in the Uganda National Minimum Health Care Package under a Sector-Wide Approach arrangement, with emphasis on recommendations of the HSSIP 2010/11-2014/15 Mid-Term review. This is further supported by the resolutions of the World Health Assembly, the International Health Partnerships, the Paris Declaration on Harmonization and Alignment and the Accra Agenda for Action and related initiatives. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the various water treatment methods utilized among the various households in Kyegegwa district in Uganda. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 397 different house-holds in Kyegegwa district. Data were analyzed using SPSS to generate descriptive data. Results: Slightly more than half of the households used boiling as the treatment methods of choice 206 (51.9%), filtration 104 (26.2%), chlorination 24 (6%), solar disinfection 16 (4%) and I don’t treat water 47 (11.8%). Conclusion: The identified water treatments methods used among the households in Kyegegwa district were boiling, filtration, chlorination and solar disinfection. Recommendation: Health education should be provided on the importance of treating water by boiling and storing them in a cleaned and covered container.

In this study, three kinds of spaces with different marketplace atmospheres, namely, the tea-drinking space, the commercial space and the courtyard space, are created with the aid of the marketplace culture characteristics of the local blocks in Pengzhen Town and the catalyst theory, so as to achieve the purpose of activating the traditional blocks in Pengzhen Town. The design takes the marketplace culture as the entry point and the most vigorous points as the catalyst points to create a living space with strong marketplace flavor, thereby activating the economic and social activities of the traditional block and promotes the sustainable renewal of the cultural space.

The Application of Old City Planning Based on the Concept of Smart Cities: A Case Study of Wanli district, Nanchang

Therefore, it is necessary to fully analyze the impact of a smart city in the urban planning field, and actively explore the planning ideas and methods that are compatible with the planning and renovation of the old city. On the basis of applying the concept of smart cities, Wanli district of Nanchang City has paid attention to the optimization of urban spatial structure, focused on the development of tourism industry, built an intelligent transportation system with priority to public transport, and improved infrastructure construction, in order to provide guidance for the wisdom update of the old city.
