Asymmetric migration dynamics of the tropical Asian and Australasian floras

The tropical Asian and Australasian floras have a close relationship,and is a vital distribution pattern of seed plants worldwide.As estimated,more than 81 families and 225 genera of seed plants distributed between tropical Asia and Australasia.However,the evolutionary dynamics of two floras were still vague.Here,a total of 29 plant lineages,represented the main clades of seed plants and different habits,were selected to investigate the biotic interchange between tropical Asia and Australasia by integrated dated phylogenies,biogeography,and ancestral state reconstructions.Our statistics indicated that 68 migrations have occurred between tropical Asia and Australasia since the middle Eocene except terminal migrations,and the migration events from tropical Asia to Australasia is more than 2 times of the reverse.Only 12 migrations occurred before 15 Ma,whereas the remaining56 migrations occurred after 15 Ma.Maximal number of potential dispersal events(MDE) analysis also shows obvious asymmetry,with southward migration as the main feature,and indicates the climax of bi-directional migrations occurred after 15 Ma.We speculate that the formation of island chains after the Australian-Sundaland collision and climate changes have driven seed plant migrations since the middle Miocene.Furthermore,biotic dispersal and stable habitat may be crucial for floristic interchange between tropical Asia and Australasia.

Mammals have high dispersal ability,and many lineages can spread across the continents when a landbridge appears.Here,we summarize the dispersal of mammals between the Old and New World at the end of the Miocene.Our analysis suggested that the three phases of dispersal represented the largest dispersal tide during the Neogene,and the direction of dispersal is dominated by being from the Old to New World.Judging from the components that crossed the dispersal corridor,the Arctic environment near the Beringia corridor in the first phase(~7.5 Ma)is a mixed environment,and in the second phase(~6.5 Ma)is an open environment,and in the third phase(~5.8 Ma and continue to the Pliocene)is a wooded(closed)environment.A clear trend of eastern Asian humidification driven by Asian monsoon and the global C4 grassland expansion explain this dispersal pattern.The boost of mammalian dispersals is controlled by the heterogeneity of environmental changes in different continents.

There are 16 species of fleshy-fruit eating birds in Autumn in Maoer Mt. NE Chiria, According to their feeding strategies. we can divide them into 3 grous: 1. Pulp-cating birds. they get nutrition from pulp. so. thcir seeds are defe-cated completely. These birds have a great effect on secd dispcrsa1. 2. Sced-eating birds- they .btai. nutrition from the seedbut pulp. Seeds are digested totally. They, don’t disperse seeds at all. 3. Whole-fruit-eating birds, both seed and pulp are di-gested when passing through gut. They don’t have any effect on seed dispersal either.

The historical relationships of nine areas of endemism of the tropical montane cloud forests(TMCFs)were analysed based on a temporal cladistic biogeographical approach.Three cladistic biogeographical analyses were conducted based on 29cladograms of terrestrial taxa by partitioning them into three time-slices,namely,Miocene,Pliocene,and Pleistocene.The results showed different area relationships over time.For the Miocene and Pliocene time slices,the Isthmus of Tehuantepec acted as a geographic barrier that fragmented the TMCFs into two portions:west of the Isthmus and east of the Isthmus.In the case of the Pleistocene,the TMCFs were broken into two portions,one related to the Neotropical region and the other to the Nearctic region.Furthermore,the analyses allowed us to detect the influences of different geological and paleoclimatological events on the distribution of the TMCFs over time.Therefore,the TMCFs current distribution might have been driven by geological events during the Miocene-Pliocene,whereas climatic fluctuations have the highest impact during the Pleistocene.

The dispersal patterns of the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary sediments in southern Anambra Basin were studied to delineate spatial facies distributions for improved mapping and hydrocarbon prospectivity. Seven lithofacies distinguished from eleven outcrop sections aided the interpretation of depositional environments for the different depositional units. Interpreted paleoenvironments ranged from estuarine/lagoonal to tidal delta and shallow marine depositional environments. Sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the deposits using vertical relationships between the delineated facies and foraminiferal and palynofacies assemblages and the interpreted environmental setting identified two complete sequences (SEQ-1 and -2) and two incomplete sequences (SEQ-3 and -4) in the study area. The sequiences are enveloped by three Type-1 Sequence Boundaries (SB), two Transgressive Surfaces of Erosion (TSE) and four Maximum Flooding Surfaces (MFS). The identified surfaces were used to delineate formation boundaries and as such would assist in the improved mapping of the Anambra Basin and adjoining depocenters. The massive sand units of the Highstand and Transgressive Systems Tracts constitute good (potential) reservoirs, while the transgressive shales would constitute seals for potential traps in the study area. The delineation of these petroleum system elements, especially those associated with the Transgressive and Highstand Systems Tracts has conferred great hydrocarbon prospectivity potential on the sedimentary sequences in the Basin. The absence of deep marine and slope complexes of the Lowstand Systems Tract (LST) in the interpreted sequences is indicative that the study area is the up-dip section of the Anambra Basin.

Interbasin water transfer projects(IBWT's)have emerged as dispersal corridors for aquatic species.However,little is known about how water transfer affects regional spread dynamics,or shapes the genetic diversity patterns of non-native populations.Shimofuri Goby Tridentiger bifasciatus is a globally introduced fish species with many wellestablished populations in IBWT's.Here,we used nuclear microsatellites to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of the Shimofuri Goby in its native and introduced sites belonging to two IBWT's in China.Our objectives were to(1)reveal the genetic diversity patterns of the Shimofuri Goby during regional spread,and(2)identify its mode of spreading in water transfer systems.We observed(1)a high level of genetic diversity in non-native populations without evidence of bottleneck effects,(2)that non-native populations with a longer water transfer times had a higher private allele richness,and(3)that non-native populations showed a highly mixed genetic structure,low level of genetic differentiation,and no significant relationship between geographical and genetic distances.Our results indicate that the genetic patterns of diversity of non-native populations are mainly shaped by a linear cascade spread processes due to long-distance movement of larvae,and are probably related to propagule pressure caused by the construction of water transfer.To manage the non-native populations of T.bifasciatus,preventive actions and physical removal should be implemented in IBWT's.

In the natural ecosystem, impulsive diffusion provides a more natural description for population dynamics. In addition, dispersal processes often involve with time delay. In view of these facts, a single species model with impulsive diffusion and dispersal delay is formulated. By the stroboscopic map of the discrete dynamical system and other analysis methods, the permanence of the system is investigated. Moreover, sufficient conditions on the existence and uniqueness of a positive periodic solution for the system are derived from the intermediate value theorem. We also demonstrate the global stability of the positive periodic solution by the theory of discrete dynamical system. Finally, numerical simulations and discussion are presented to validate our theoretical results.

This study aims to examine the following three hypotheses on the impact of global warming on the populations of the water strider, Aquarius paludum in the Kochi-Nankoku area (33。30'N) of Kochi prefecture, Japan through the recent data collected in 2009-2011. 1) Has the generation number increased? 2) Has aestivation appeared in adults? 3) Have overwintering adults stopped dispersing between the water surface and overwintering lands-sites far away from water and, instead, overwintered on/near the shore? Sampling data showed that the number of generations may have increased from three (1989-2002 strains) and four (2004-2008) to five (2009-2011) per year in Kochi (33。N). The ratio of adults having well developed flight muscles decreased from 45% in 1995 to 24% - 28% in 2009-2011 inoverwintering adults collected from the field in fall likely as a result of histolysis. “Mosaic-typed” wing morph group with long fore-wings and short hind-wings newly appeared in 2009-2011 in the Kochi-Nankoku overwintering populations. The mosaic-typed wings group cannot fly and the black and long fore wings might function as absorbing apparatus of sun-lights in the daytime of winter. Some overwintering adults seem to stop migrating between water bodies and overwintering sites on land far from the water bodies and overwinter, instead, near the shore. The use of Aquarius paludum as a biological indicator would be possible in the future, because this species can respond and change their reproductive and dispersal characteristics to the global change.

The efect of landscape structure on the evolution of two alternative dispersal strategies

Background:dispersal is an important event for most organisms at least once in their life cycle.The evolution of dispersal can be infuenced by local adaptation,landscape structure,and perceived temporal and spatial variation.The interaction between local adaptation,landscape heterogeneity,temporal variability and rules of dispersal may be more complex than previously assumed.Therefore,we sought to understand the infuence of emigration rules and landscape structure on emerging dispersal rates and traits.Here,we implemented an individual-based model(IBM)of trait evolution in scenarios characterized by diferent landscape structures and diferent degrees of spatial heterogeneity and global temporal variation.Individuals could evolve two traits coding for their environmental niche(position of niche optimum and niche width),and two traits determining nearest-neighbor dispersal:an individual emigrates with a probability defned by the frst trait(random emigration),but emigrates with certainty if the fertility expected in the patch of residence falls below a threshold specifed by the second trait(habitat-dependent emigration).Results:We note an interaction efect between dispersal strategy and spatial variance—lower emigration under habitat-dependent than under random emigration if spatial heterogeneity is low,but eventually a reversal of this ranking if heterogeneity becomes large.Landscapes with sharp transition of habitat attributes result in a high degree of spatial sorting,while fractal landscapes do not.Emigration rates are overall lowest,when spatial variation is highest.Conclusions:We conclude that emergent emigration rates are infuenced more by landscape structure and spatiotemporal heterogeneity than by the emigration strategy.With the ongoing land use change more research into this topic could help highlight the difculties species might face under the change from landscapes characterized by gradual transition zones to landscapes dominated by abrupt ecotones,the latter typical for agricultural and urban settings.
