The characteristics and recognition of internal-tide and internal-wave deposits

Internal-tide and internal-wave deposits are a new and important type of deep-water traction-current deposits. Based on an analysis of documented internal-tide and internal-wave deposits, five facies types can be recognized: ( ⅰ ) bidirectional cross-laminated sandstone facies, ( ⅱ ) unidirectional cross-bedded and cross-laminated sandstone facies, ( ⅲ ) rhythmic alternating sandstone facies and mudstone, ( Ⅳ ) flaser, wavy and lenticular bedded foraminiferal limestone facies, ( Ⅴ ) sandy oolitic limestone facies with flaser, wavy and lenticular bedding and epsilon cross bedding, which formed in submarine channel, unchannelized continental slope and plateau environments respectively. Accoding to the available data and knowledge,three sedimentation models are built; some discriminating characteristics of internal-tide and internal-wave deposits, and the distinction between them and contourites and turbidites are summed up.

Morphological Diversity and Distribution of <i>Garcinia kola</i>Heckel (Clusiaceae) in Two Agro-Ecological Areas of Côte d’Ivoire

The purpose of this study is to determine the morphological diversity and distribution of Garcinia kola Heckel (Clusiaceae) in two preferential agro-ecological growth areas in Cote d’Ivoire, for the sustainable management of the species. Ninety-four (94) trees of G. kola were sampled in Affery (south) and Biankouma (west) and characterized on the basis of 13 quantitative characteristics of the fruit, the general appearance of a plant, leaves and seeds. This study revealed the existence of very significant variability and differences within the trees sampled for most characteristics. Very strong correlations were found among the characteristics of the fruits. On the basis of these characteristics, it emerged that the fruits of the Biankouma area are larger than those of Affery. Multivariate analyses show that diversity is structured with tree distribution into four distinct groups based on the following discriminating characteristics: fruit height (Hfr), leaf width (largF), seed mass (Mgr) and trunk diameter (Dm). These parameters can be used as a basis for selecting and maintaining the high variability of G. kola. Analysis of the geographical distribution of trees, based on the nearest neighbour model, revealed an aggregate distribution in both areas.

Slight free falling impact test for assessing guava maturity

A non-destructive method for assessing the maturity of guava was developed based on the mechanical properties of the fruit under the slight falling impact test. The levels of maturity were classified with cluster and discriminant analyses on the primitive impact measurements and their derivatives. The accuracy of classification was improved with linear discriminant analysis and the number of indices being processed was reduced with stepwise regression analysis. The accuracy of classification is 84.21%. The performance shows that slight falling impact together with linear discriminant analysis provides a promising non-destructive approach in assessing the maturity of guavas.
