Subject-Based Information Retrieval System in digital libraries

Objective: Information visualization is the study of interactive depictions of abstract and data to strengthen the human cognition. Designing an appropriate information visualization system may be very useful technique for scholars, who intent to get scientific information from digital libraries. The objective of current study was to map and visualize the key-information of dissertations in academic libraries. To achieve the aim, an information retrieval system was designed to present the interactive graphic view of dissertations’ subjects in academic. Methods: An information retrieval system was designed by information visualization toolkit that presents the related subjects of dissertations in academic libraries. In addition, the satisfaction-levels of library-users were analyzed by administrating a standard questionnaire (QUIS Questionnaire). Results: The study indicated that the designed IR system helped to provide a user-friendly environment through displaying subjective relations of dissertations, overwhelming variety of colors in displaying information. Fast and easy access to the cover-to-cover information of dissertations and user-interaction facilities are the advantages of designed IR. Analysis of data furthermore indicated that the users’ satisfaction from the system was from medium to high grade. Conclusion: Designing the IR-system revealed an excessive influence on users’ satisfaction;therefore, proposing such systems for employing in academic libraries is very suitable and its implementation is necessary.

Across the many empirical tests of TAM, TAM has become well-established as a robust, powerful model for perceiving user acceptance, but it’s too parsimonious. There is growing interest in external variables of TAM. Many studies focus on organization context, such as subject norm, facilitating conditions, but few studies have examined external variables from individual differences. In this study we take digital libraries for research to identify individual differences that impact perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of IS. Based on TAM3, the model proposes individual differences (self-efficacy and knowledge of search domain) as external variables that determine perceptions about the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of digital libraries. The proposed model is empirically tested using data collected from a survey of 286 college students. Results show that self-efficacy and knowledge of search domain have significant effects on both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness of digital libraries. Finally, the findings provide understanding of the factors that measured digital libraries success. Important theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Statistical learning prediction of fatigue crack growth via path slicing and re-weighting

Predicting potential risks associated with the fatigue of key structural components is crucial in engineering ***,fatigue often involves entangled complexities of material microstructures and service conditions,making diagnosis and prognosis of fatigue damage *** report a statistical learning framework to predict the growth of fatigue cracks and the life-to-failure of the components under loading conditions with *** libraries of fatigue crack patterns and the remaining life are constructed by high-fidelity physical *** reduction and neural network architectures are then used to learn the history dependence and nonlinearity of fatigue crack ***-slicing and re-weighting techniques are introduced to handle the statistical noises and rare *** predicted fatigue crack patterns are self-updated and self-corrected by the evolving crack *** end-to-end approach is validated by representative examples with fatigue cracks in plates,which showcase the digital-twin scenario in real-time structural health monitoring and fatigue life prediction for maintenance management decision-making.

Mobile Agent Based Framework for Integrating digital Library System

Few of the current approaches to achieve the integration of digital library system have considered the influence of network factors on quality of service for the integration system of digital libraries. For this reason, a mobile agent based framework for integrating digital library system is proposed. Based on this framework, a prototype system is implemented and the key technique for it are described. Compared with the current approaches, using mobile agent technique to achieve the integration of digital library system can not only avoid transmitting a lot of data on the network, lower the dependence on network bandwidth for the system, but also improve the quality of service for the integration system of digital libraries in intermitted or unreliable network connection settings.

Differentiated digital library evaluation in a hierarchical model stemming from its operational scope and complexity

digital libraries are complex systems and this brings difficulties for their evaluation. This paper proposes a hierarchical model to solve this problem, and puts the entangled matters into a clear-layered structure. Firstly, digital libraries(DLs thereafter)are classified into 5 groups in ascending gradations, i.e. mini DLs, small DLs, medium DLs,large DLs, and huge DLs by their scope of operation. Then, according to the characteristics of DLs at different operational scope and level of sophistication, they are further grouped into unitary DLs, union DLs and hybrid DLs accordingly. Based on this simulated structure,a hierarchical model for digital library evaluation is introduced, which evaluates DLs differentiatingly within a hierarchical scheme by using varying criteria based on their specific level of operational complexity such as at the micro-level, medium-level, and/or at the macro-level. Based on our careful examination and analysis of the current literature about DL evaluation system, an experiment is conducted by using the DL evaluation model along with its criteria for unitary DLs at micro-level. The main contents resulting from this evaluation experimentation and also those evaluation indicators and relevant issues of major concerns for DLs at medium-level and macro-level are also to be presented at some length.
