A novel diffractive optical element, named phase zone photon sieve （PZPS）, is presented. There are three kinds of phase plates in PZPSs： PZPS1, PZPS2, and PZPS3. Each of the PZPSs has its own structure and is made on quartz substrate by etching. The three PZPSs have stronger diffraction peak intensity than a photon sieve （PS） when the margin pinhole and zone line width are kept the same. The PZPS3 can produce a smaller central diffractive spot than the ordinary PS with the same number of zones on the Fresnel zone plate. We have given the design method for and the simulation of PZPS and PS. PZPS has potential applications in optical maskless lithography.

The innovative radiating structures as a conical millimeter wave FZP lens are proposed for subwavelength focusing. The results of FDTD simulation and experimental verification are discussed. It has been shown that in contrast to the flat diffractive optics the curvilinear 3D diffractive conical optics is capable of overcoming 3D Abbe barrier with a focal distance F greater than 2A. The focal intensity distribution for such type of lenses is not circularly symmetric and thus the focal spot in the high numerical aperture case is no longer an Airy pattern. These results may find useful applications in optical microscopes, including ＂reverse-microscope＇, nondestructive testing, microoptics, and nanooptics.

We present a method of both polarization and amplitude modulations on an incident beam to obtain a longitudinally polarized subwavelength-sized optical needle. A 4-f system with a spatial light modulator is used to generate experimentally a two-mode alternate cylindrical vector beam by polarization modulation, enhancing performance and facilitating implementation. We optimize the beam focusing properties after passing the beam through an annular aperture to obtain amplitude modulation by the simulated annealing algorithm. Numerical results indicate that a sharp focal spot （0.417A） with a long focal depth （8A） and a strong longitudinally polarized field can be easily achieved.

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography(FINCH)is a self-interference based super-resolution three-dimensional imaging technique.FINCH in inline configuration requires an active phase modulator to record at least three phase-shifted camera shots to reconstruct objects without twin image and bias terms.In this study,FINCH is realized using a randomly multiplexed bifocal binary diffractive Fresnel zone lenses fabricated using electron beam lithography.The object space is calibrated by axially scanning a point object along the optical axis and recording the corresponding point spread holograms(PSHs).An object is mounted within the calibrated object space,and the object hologram was recorded under identical experimental conditions used for recording the PSHs.The image of the object at different depths was reconstructed by a cross-correlation between the object hologram and the PSHs.Application potential including bio-medical optics is discussed.

D subwavelength multilevel (2 , 4 , 8 , etc. levels) columned stairstep grating with coned spatial profile has been designed to reduce reflection. In this paper, the rigorous coupled wave theory is employed to analyze the electromagnetic diffraction property of the columned stairstep grid grating. The structure is shown to achieve extremely low reflectance over a wide field of view and a wide light wave band.

The spectral behavior of polychromatic spatially fully coherent light diffracted by an annular aperture in the far field is studied. It is shown that the spectrum in the far field is generally different from that at the aperture, i.e., the spectrum in the far field is proportional to the spectrum at the aperture and a spectral modifier, which depends on the central obstruction ratio ε and diffraction angle θ. Detailed numerical calculation results indicate that significant spectral changes take place in the vicinity of zeros of the Airy pattern. It is found that at the critical diffraction angle θc, the spectrum is split into two lines, while at a diffraction angle a little smaller than θc, the spectrum is red-shifted, and at a diffraction angle a little larger than θc, the spectrum is blue-shifted. The influence of the central obstruction ratio on the spectral anomalies is presented.

A method to shape the incident laser beam into a concentric multi-ring pattern with different intensity distribution is presented based on geometrical transform method and energy conservation. The output two and three rings are designed as examples to verify the validity of the method. The real shaped rings are produced by the spatial light modulation （SLM） and the experimental results show that the shaped laser beam can satisfy the design requirements.

A novel numerical algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the Laplacian of an object field from one single in-line hologram. This method uses two different reconstruction distances of z and z ＋ Δz, or two different reconstruction wavelengths of Δ and Δ＋Δλ to reconstruct one digital in-line hologram. Theoretical analysis shows that when the value of Δz or Δλ is sufficiently small, the difference of the two reconstructed fields is an approximation to the second-order Laplacian differentiation of the object wave, and the zero-order and ＂twin-image＂ noise can be almost eliminated simultaneously. Computer numerical simulations and optical experiments are carried out to validate the effectiveness of this algorithm.

Integrated diffractive optical mode converter, consisting of a diffractive optical element (DOE) and a slab waveguide, is used for fiber-to-waveguide coupling. The phase of the DOE is generally designed by optimization algorithm. In this paper, the precise design, a new method with one more restrictive way, is adopted to design the diffractive optical mode converter for fiber-to-waveguide coupling. Through this method, the intensity of any point on the output plane is fully filled with the required demand. Compared with what previously published, the coupling loss of the precise designed converter is lower.
