Contribution of phytoliths to total biogenic silica volumes in the tropical rivers of Malaysia and associated implications for the marine biogeochemical cycle

The contribution of phytoliths to total biogenic silica(BSi) volumes in rivers worldwide,and the associated implications for the biogeochemical cycle,require in-depth study.Based on samples from rivers in Peninsular Malaysia,this project investigated the source and characteristics of B Si found in Asian tropical rivers,as well as the process of reverse weathering taking place in these fluvial systems.Results indicated that BSi samples collected in sediments consisted of phytolith,diatom and sponge spicules.Phytoliths,predominantly of the elongate form,comprised 92.8%-98.3% of BSi in the Pahang River.diatom BSi in this river consisted mainly of pennatae diatoms,but represented a relatively small proportion of the total BSi volume.However,diatom BSi(predominantly of the Centricae form) was more prevalent in the Pontian and Endau Rivers with shares of 68.8% and 79.3% of the total BSi volumes,respectively,than Pahang River.Carbon contents of the BSi particulates ranged from 1.85% to 10.8% with an average of 4.79%.These values are higher than those recorded in other studies to date,and indicate that BSi plays a major role in controlling permanent carbon burial.This study suggests that phytoliths from terrestrial plants are the primary constituents of BSi in the rivers of Peninsular Malaysia,and therefore represent a significant proportion of the coastal silica budget.

One new species,four newly recorded genera,and two newly recorded species of diatoms are described from China.They are Sellaphora fuxianensis sp.nov.Li,Sellaphora Mereschkowsky,Karayevia Round & Bukhtiyarova,Placoneis Mereschkowsky,Fallacia Stickle & Mann,Placoneis prespanensis Levkov,Krstic & Nakov,and Fallacia lucinensis(Hustedt) D.G.Mann.All taxa were collected from Lake Fuxian in Yunnan Province,China.These species were observed with light and scanning electron microscopes,and their taxonomic characters are discussed.

Assessment of geochemical and sedimentological characteristics of atmospheric dust in Shiraz,southwest Iran

Geogenic dust is commonly believed to be one of the most important environmental problems in the Middle East.The present study investigated the geochemical characteristics of atmospheric dust particles in Shiraz City(south of Iran).Atmospheric dust samples were collected through a dry collector method by using glass trays at 10 location sites in May 2018.Elemental composition was analysed through inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry.Meteorological data showed that the dustiest days were usually in spring and summer,particularly in April.X-ray diffraction analysis of atmospheric dust samples indicated that the mineralogical composition of atmospheric dust was calcite+dolomite(24%)>palygorskite(18%)>quartz(14%)>muscovite(13%)>albite(11%)>kaolinite(7%)>gypsum(7%)>zircon=anatase(3%).The high occurrence of palygorskite(16%-23%) could serve as a tracer of the source areas of dust storms from the desert of Iraq and Saudi Arabia to the South of Iran.Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the sizes of the collected dust varied from 50 μm to0.8 μm,but 10 μm was the predominant size.The atmospheric dust collected had prismatic trigonal-rhombohedral crystals and semi-rounded irregular shapes.Moreover,diatoms were detected in several samples,suggesting that emissions from dry-bed lakes,such as Hoor Al-Azim Wetland(located in the southwest of Iran),also contributed to the dust load.Backward trajectory simulations were performed at the date of sampling by using the NOAA HYSPLIT model.Results showed that the sources of atmospheric dust in the study area were the eastern area of Iraq,eastern desert of Saudi Arabia,Kuwait and Khuzestan Province.The Ca/Al ratio of the collected samples(1.14) was different from the upper continental crust(UCC) value(UCC=0.37),whereas Mg/A1(0.29),K/Al(0.22) and Ti/Al(0.07) ratios were close to the UCC value(0.04).This condition favours desert calcisols as the main mineral dust sources.Analysis of the crustal enrichment factor(EF_(crustal)) revealed geogenic sources for V,Mo,P

Response of benthic algae to environmental conditions in an urban lake recovered from eutrophication, China

Benthic algae communities dominate the primary production in littoral zone of shallow lake.To tmderstand the long-term effect of alteration in the composition of benthic algae community assemblage in such as a lake in China,we analyzed the benthic algae developments and indicators in the Donghu Lake in Wuhan,central China in 2004 and 2014.We compared the benthic algae biomass,compositions,and species richness of aquatic macrophytes and the changes of primary physicochemical parameters.The results show that in the 10-year period,chl a and conductivity declined significantly but nutrient level of the whole lake remained largely stable.The benthic algae biomass doubled and the relative proportion of green algae increased,whereas the benthic diatom ratio decreased.The benthic diatom assemblages and taxa differed in a number of ways,showing more epiphytic diatom species,and the relative abundance and species richness changed markedly.The number of aquatic macrophyte species increased from 3 in 2004 to 15 in 2014,presenting a remarkable recovery from previous eutrophication conditions.The changes of water level,chl a,and conductivity played a crucial role in governing aquatic macrophytes re-colonization in the littoral zones in the period.The ecological characteristics of littoral benthic diatoms reflect habitat coupling as indicated by redundancy analysis.Therefore,the close link between benthic algae and macrophyte recovery demonstrates that the benthic algae metrics are much more useful than nutrient levels to quantify the process of restoration in the lake.

Past environmental changes based on diatom relative abundances have been inferred from the maar Lake Erlongwan in northeast China.The limnology of Lake Erlongwan is affected by the strongly seasonal regional climate.The composition of diatom assemblages,in turn,responds to changes in the seasonal duration of ice cover in winter,water-column turnover in spring and autumn,and thermal stratification in summer. Statistical analysis of the sedimentary diatom assemblages reveals three significant stratigraphic zones over the past 1000 yr.The highest abundance of the planktonic species Discostella species occurs between AD 1050 and 1400 and suggests an annual ice-free period of long duration and well-developed summer stratification of the water column.This planktonic diatom peak between ca.AD 1150 and 1200 suggests that this period was the warmest over the past 1000 yr.The interval between AD 1400 and 1800 is marked by a decline in planktonic diatoms and suggests shorter duration of the ice-free season,weaker water stratification and possibly generally cold conditions.After AD 1800 relative abundances of planktonic diatoms,including Puncticuluta praetermissa and Asteriunella formosa,increase again,which indicaLes lengthening of Lhe duration of the annual ice-free period and a stronger overturn of the water column.All these data imply that the pattern of the seasons is different between the MWP and the 20th century.

diatom test(forensic diatomology)is commonly considered as the“gold standard”in the diagnosis of drowning in forensic practices.The diatomology contributes significantly not only in determining the mode of death but also in determining the site of drowning because of various distribution characterizations of diatoms in different water bodies or different seasons.Hence,it is believed that diatomological mapping will be interest to forensic pathologists in the future development.Here,we reviewed the all the studies on the distribution characterizations of diatoms in different water bodies in China recently.The present paper summarized the current situation and the limitations of the previous studies.Moreover,we suggested that it was necessary to establish a systematized and standardized diatomological mapping program nationwide.Our study also encourages diatomological mapping for forensic characterization of water bodies for a prolonged time.

为探索黑龙江省阿什河流域底栖硅藻群落特征及环境相关性,并对阿什河流域进行水环境健康评价,本研究于2018年7月(丰水期)和2018年10月(枯水期)对阿什河流域8个典型采样点进行调查。基于相似性分析检验(analysisofsimilarities,ANOSIM)和相似百分比分析(similarity percentages,SIMPER)分析探索枯水期与丰水期之间底栖硅藻的群落差异,通过冗余分析(redundancyanalysis,RDA)对驱动底栖硅藻的关键环境因子进行筛选;使用硅藻生物指数(biological diatom index,IBD)、硅藻属指数(generic index of diatom,GI)和水体营养指数(trophic state index,TSI)对研究区域水体营养状态进行初步评价。结果表明,研究期间共鉴定底栖硅藻89种,其中丰水期80种、枯水期57种。独立样本T检验(T-test)表明阿什河流域物种丰富度丰水期显著高于枯水期(P0.05)。ANOSIM结合SIMPER分析结果显示阿什河流域硅藻群落格局存在一定的时空异质性。RDA分析表明水的电导率是驱动阿什河流域底栖硅藻空间分布的环境因子,枯水期与丰水期之间高锰酸盐指数(CODMn)含量的变化是影响硅藻群落演替的因素之一。IBD、GI和TSI指数结果显示阿什河流域受人为活动干扰区域营养状态较差,IBD指数较GI指数能更有效的反映阿什河流域水体营养状况。

Gut Peculiarities of Feed Deprived White Sturgeons (<i>Acipenser transmontanus</i>, Richardson 1836)

In the White sturgeon fish farms, some individuals have difficulty in getting access to food: such sturgeons are called "runts", and they result in a slower growth rate than normally feeding fish. In this paper, we have studied the gut peculiarities of runt sturgeons. Utilizing in paralleling an analysis of diatom populations in both the fish gut tissues and the rearing tank waters, we hypothesized a causative relation between the occurrence of runt sturgeons and periodic diatom blooms. In fact, we have observed that the diatom species identified in the aquatic environment were also detected in organs (Fragilaria spp and Rhoicosfenia spp for both glandular body, mid-intestine) of the runt sturgeon's gut, but not in tissues of normally feeding individuals. Owing to their siliceous wall, diatoms can be responsible for areas of epithetlial detachment in the mucosal surfaces of the alimentary canal and a catharral inflammation in both the gastric pits and intestinal folds which may be the cause of secondary bacterial diseases. We suggest that diatom blooms may contribute to the occurrence of runt sturgeons in the studied Italian fish farm.

Application of CCA for study on modern lake diatoms and environment in the Tibetan Plateau

The relations between lake surface sediment diatoms and water environmental variables were revealed effectively by use of a new multivariate canonical correspondence analysis （CCA） based on 45 lakes in the Tibetan Plateau. Water depth, conductivity, Cl-, Mg2+, K+ and pH, identified from 12 contemporary water environmental variables, can significantly and independently explain the diatom distributions （pdiatom-environment relationship. The deletion of redundant environmental variables and unusual samples do not influence the explanation to diatom data. The final CCA result indicates that the water depth and the salinity are the two important environmental gradients and influence the diatom distribution in the plateau lakes. The water depth correlates with axis 1, while conductivity, Cl-, Mg2+ and K+, indicating the direction of salinity changes,
