OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) Four-diagnostic Auxiliary Apparatus in disease diagnosis.METHODS: The liver cancer patients and healthy controls were recruited from Shanghai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Hospital and Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, respectively. Then, the included subjects were diagnosed by the Four-diagnostic auxiliary apparatus.RESULTS: Thirty liver cancer patients and 30 paired healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Based on the apparatus, the pulse wave velocity was significantly higher in patients compared with controls(P diagnostic auxiliary apparatus can be applied in clinical diagnosis of body constitution and health status of subjects. It promotes the accuracy and speed for disease diagnosis and TCM standardization.

Towards a sustainable healthcare system,the clinicalgrade diagnostic platform should be decentralized into lowcost consumer-grade handheld devices,for broadly and early disease screening and diagnosis.The joint advancement of CMOS biosensors and signal-processing capability has recently transformed bulky laboratory instruments into handheld devices,leading to cost,size and weight reduction by orders of magnitude.This article gives a glimpse of the lab-on-CMOS in-vitro diagnostic(IVD)tools for point-of-care applications.

This paper introduces a computerized on-line partial discharge （PD） monitoring and diagnostic system for transformers. The system, which is already in use in a power station, uses wide-band active transducers and a data acquisition unit with modularized and exchangeable components. The system software is a power equipment monitoring and diagnostic system, which is based on the component object model, and was developed for monitoring multiple parameters in multiple power supply systems. The statistical characteristics of PDs in power transformers were studied using 7 experimental models for simulating PDs in transformers and 3 models for simulating interfering discharges in air. The discharge features were analyzed using a 3-D pattern chart with a three-layer back-propagation artificial neural network used to recognize the patterns. The results show that PDs in air and oil can be distinguished. The model can be used for interference rejection on-line monitoring of partial discharge in transformers.

Objective:To assess the diagnostic accuracy of serum GPC3 versus alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)for HCC by using the method of system review.Methods:PubMed and EMBASE were searched from its inception to 20,April 2014 for studies that compared diagnostic accuracy of serum GPC3 with AFP for HCC.Sensitivity,specificity and other measures were pooled using random-effects models.Summary receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to summarize the overall test performance.Results:Fourteen studies were included in this meta-analysis.Summary estimates for serum GPC3 and AFP in diagnosing HCC were as follows:sensitivity,69%(95%confidence interval(CI),56-80%)vs.60%(95%CI,50-69%);specificity,91%(95%CI,76-97%)vs.92%(95%CI,84-98%);diagnostic odds ratio(DOR),22(95%CI,6-83)vs.18(95%CI,8-41);and area under sROC,0.85(95%CI,0.81-0.88)vs.0.80(95%CI,0.76-0.83).The pooled sensitivity and specificity for(GPC3+AFP)and AFP were:sensitivity 80%(95%CI,75-85%)vs.64%(95%CI,53-73%)and specificity 86%(95%CI,74-93%)vs.96%(95%CI,86-99%).A significant heterogeneity was found among the ten studies,and meta-regression and subgroup meta-analysis suggested that race and assay type were probably responsible for the heterogeneity.Conclusions:Serum GPC3 may be a promising diagnostic marker of HCC and it was helpful for early detection of primary hepatocellular carcinoma when combined with AFP.More studies for specific race of patients,and using certain methods for detecting GPC3 are required to further confirm the diagnostic value of GPC3 for HCC.

Study has been performed on the characteristics of the pyroclastic surge deposits in the northern Yandangshan area of Zhejiang Province. Based on this study and the relative research of other scholars, five major diagnostic criteria of the deposits have been proposed. Moreover, the geological significance of the study on the deposits has been discussed.

Comparison of 3 mm versus 4 mm rigid endoscope in diagnostic nasal endoscopy

UNASSIGNED:Compare nasal endoscopy with 3 mm versus conventional 4 mm rigid 30° endoscopes for visualization, patient comfort, and examiner ease.;UNASSIGNED:Ten adults with no previous sinus surgery underwent bilateral nasal endoscopy with both 4 mm and 3 mm endoscopes (resulting in 20 paired nasal endoscopies). Visualization, patient discomfort and examiner's difficulty were assessed with every endoscopy. Sino-nasal structures were checked on a list if visualized satisfactorily. Patients rated discomfort on a standardized numerical pain scale (0-10). Examiners rated difficulty of examination on a scale of 1-5 (1 = easiest).;UNASSIGNED:Visualization with 3 mm endoscope was superior for the sphenoid ostium ( = 0.002), superior turbinate ( = 0.007), spheno-ethmoid recess ( = 0.006), uncinate process ( = 0.002), cribriform area ( = 0.007), and Valve of Hasner ( = 0.002). Patient discomfort was not significantly different for 3 mm 4 mm endoscopes but correlated with the examiners' assessment of difficulty ( = 0.73). The examiner rated endoscopy with 4 mm endoscopes more difficult ( = 0.027).;UNASSIGNED:The 3 mm endoscope was superior in visualizing the sphenoid ostium, superior turbinate, spheno-ethmoid recess, uncinate process, cribriform plate, and valve of Hasner. It therefore may be useful in assessment of spheno-ethmoid recess, nasolacrimal duct, and cribriform area pathologies. Overall, patients tolerated nasal endoscopy well. Though patient discomfort was not significantly different between the endoscopes, most discomfort with 3 mm endoscopes was noted while examining structures difficult to visualize with the 4 mm endoscope. Patients' discomfort correlated with the examiner's assessment of difficulty.

Two-third of the world's population lives in the Asia Pacific region where prevalence of diabetes has reached epidemic proportion.With China and India being the most populous nations on the globe,it is believed that over 150 million diabetes reside in the region with more than 95%being of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Furthermore,other Pacific islands in the region have high rales of T2DM including Tonga.Fiji.French Polynesia,and Nauru.The latter has the highest prevalence of T2DM per population in the world.Over the past two decades,in Australia and New Zealand,the prevalence of T2DM has more than doubled,mainly amongst the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Maori peoples respectively.With the increasing prevalence of dialietes in the Asia Pacific region coupled with the limited number of resources,use of a reliable and effective mode of diagnosis for T3DVI is warranted.Yet to date,only New Zealand has adopted the American Diabetes Association recommendation of using hemoglobin A1C in the diagnosis of the disease.The aim of this review is to discuss the clinical usefulness of hemoglobin A1C and highlight its diagnostic role in the Asia Pacific region where T2DM is increasingly encountered.

Objective:To compare the two methods of rapid diagnostic tests(RDTs)and microscopy in the diagnosis of malaria.Methods:RDTs and microscopy were carried out to diagnose malaria. Percentage malaria parasitaemia was calculated on thin films and all non-acute cases of plasmodiasis with less than 0.001%malaria parasitaemia were regarded as negative.Results were simply presented as percentage positive of the total number of patients under study.The results of RDTs were compared to those of microscopy while those of RDTs based on antigen were compared to those of RDTs based on antibody.Patients' follow-up was made for all cases.Results: All the 200 patients under present study tested positive to RDTs based on malaria antibodies(serum)method(100%).128 out of 200 tested positive to RDTs based on malaria antigen(whole blood)method(64%),while 118 out of 200 patients under present study tested positive to visual microscopy of Lieshman and diluted Giemsa(59%).All patients that tested positive to microscopy also tested positive to RDTs based on antigen.All patients on the second day of follow-up were non-febrile and had antimalaria drugs.Conclusions;We conclude based on the present study that the RDTs based on malaria antigen(whole blood)method is as specific as the traditional microscopy and even appears more sensitive than microscopy.The RDTs based on antibody(serum)method is unspecific thus it should not be encouraged.It is most likely that Africa being an endemic region,formation of certain levels of malaria antibody may not be uncommon.The present study also supports the opinion that a good number of febrile cases is not due to malaria. We support WHO's report on cost effectiveness of RDTs but,recommend that only the antigen based method should possibly,be adopted in Africa and other malaria endemic regions of the world.

Background Serum interleukin-6(IL-6)has a moderate diagnostic performance in pediatric acute appendicitis(PAA).The evidence regarding its capacity to discern between complicated and uncomplicated PAA is scarce.Methods We designed a prospective observational study to validate serum IL-6 as a marker for diagnostic classification between complicated and uncomplicated PAA.This study included 205 patients divided into three groups:(1)patients who underwent major outpatient surgery(n=57);(2)patients with non-surgical abdominal pain(NSAP)in whom the diagnosis of PAA was excluded(n=53),and(3)patients with a confirmed diagnosis of PAA(n=95).The PAA patients were further classified as uncomplicated or complicated PAA.IL-6 concentration was determined in all patients at diagnosis.Comparative statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test,the Fisher exact test and the Kruskall Wallis test.The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves(AUC)were calculated.Results Median(interquartile range,IQR)serum IL-6 values were 2 pg/mL(2.0–3.4)in group 1,3.9 pg/mL(2.4–11.9)in group 2,and 23.9 pg/mL(11.1–61.0)in group 3(Pdiagnostic performance of this molecule.
