Theoretical analysis of the limiting rate of phreatic evaporation for aeolian sandy soil in Taklimakan desert

Phreatic evaporation is a great lose for shallow groundwater in the Taklimakan desert. Given soil type and groundwater table, the limiting rate of phreatic evaporation is defined as the maximum of water transferred from groundwater to soil surface per unit time, which is a key parameter and control condition for phreatic evaporation model developing. The soil water characteristic curve for the aeolian sandy soil in the Taklimakan desert was fitted with the least square method based on the formula of soil moisture characteristics curve proposed by Van Genuchten, using observed soil moisture and soil water suction data. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was determined by the instantaneous profile method in situ and the calculation formula for unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was established. According to the steady flow theory, the quasi-analytical solution of limiting rate of phreatic evaporation was derived on the basis of generalization of the formula of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. The results show that the soil moisture characteristics in the Taklimakan desert can be well described by Van Genuchten’s formula, and the limiting rate of phreatic evaporation declines by power function with the descending of groundwater table.

Revision of two species of Calligonum from the desert of Xinjiang,Northwestern China

By examination of Calligonum pumilum A. Los. and Calligonum ruoqiangense Liou f.,collected from natural habitats,and the analysis of their variance,this paper revealed that the morphological characters of these specimens are quite different from each other,especially in the twist direction of ribs on fruits,rows of bristles along each rib,rigidity,interweaving degree of bristles,and their geographical distribution. Therefore,it is suggested that C. pumilum and C. ruoqiangense should be considered as two independent species.

THE FORMATION, EVOLUTION AND CAUSE OF THE Mu Us desert IN CHINA

Comprehensive correlation and analysis on the stratigraphic structure of the Quaternaryeolian sand in the Mu Us desert comfirm that the desert has been in existenceintermittently since the initial stage of the Quaternary at latest. The desert is asteppe type sandy desert characterized by mosaic distribution of shifting, semi-shifting, semi-fixed and fixed dune and areas of loess grass land. It did not evolve toward uniform shift-ing sand, but underwent a series of normal and reverse development processes from the occur-rence of shifting sand to the spread, fixation and reduction of the sandy desert to *** fluctuation since the Quaternary is the primary factor for the formation and evolutionof the desert, while neotectonics and human activities are the secondary factors.

Analyses of temperature and humidity profiles and heat balance of the surface boundary-layer in the hinterland of the Taklimakan desert

The daily variation regularities of micro-meteorological features, such as the surface layer temperature and humidity profiles of the inner desert in summer, the temperature of sand bed, the radiation of the earth's surface and the heat balance, were analyzed by combination method and logarithm regression according to the data obtained from the Atmospheric Environmental Observation Station of Taklimakan desert in July―August of 2006 and 2007. It has been shown that temperature inversion occurred near the surface layer at night in summer, the temperature increased with the height within a certain altitude range, and the reverse was true during the daytime. The ground surface radiation balance of the Taklimakan desert was mainly positive; other radiation components (the global radiation, the reflective radiation, the ground upward long wave radiation and the net radiation) exhibited daily variation char- acteristics evidently and showed normal diurnal cycle, except for the downward atmospheric long-wave radiation. The heat exchange of the surface layer of the desert was dominated by turbulence sensible heat, and only a small portion of heat was transferred to the atmospheric surface layer in the form of latent heat. The surface sensible heat and latent heat changed with the increase and decrease of sun elevation angle, with maximum of the latent heat appearing in wee hours and the peak value of the sensible heat appearing at noon. Observation and analysis showed that heating effect of the underlying surface of the desert was great on the aerosphere; the surface was a high heat source during the day and became a weak cold source at night.

Stepwise advance of the Mu Us desert since late Pliocene:Evidence from a red clay-loess record

Analyses of paleomagnetic polarity reversals, magnetic susceptibility and grain size on the red clay-loess sequence, about 280 m thick, at Jingbian show that this sequence contains most of the stratigraphic units recorded in the standard red clay-loess sections of the Loess Plateau over the past 3.5 Ma. Using sand particle percentage ( > 63 μm%) of the eolian sequence as a proxy indicator of desert extent and aridity in the dust source regions, it is found that during the past 3.5 Ma, there are three important climatic events indicating the advance of the Mu Us desert. The events occurred at about 2.6, 1.1 and 0.6 MaBP, respectively. The stepwise advance of the Mu Us desert may be linked closely to increase in global ice volume and uplift of the Tibetan Plateau in the late Cenozoic.

Temporal and spatial variation of atmospheric water vapor in the Taklimakan desert and its surrounding areas

The study of the temporal and spatial variation of atmospheric water vapor has the important significance to show the response to climate change in the Taklimakan desert. The series of monthly atmospheric water vapor from 1961 to 1998 are reconstructed using the observation data including the precipitation, ground water vapor pressure data over the period of 1961 to 2006 from 27 observation stations in its surrounding areas and meteorological data from the Tazhong station during 1999-2006. Then the relationship between atmospheric water vapor and ground vapor pressure is calculated and validated using the observation data for the period of 1976 to 2006 from 5 sounding stations (Hotan, Kuqa, Ruoqiang, Kashgar, and Minfeng). The temporal and spatial variation of atmospheric water vapor in the Taklimakan desert and its surrounding areas is studied and then its distribution is generated. Results show that high value zone of atmospheric water vapor is mainly distributed in the northern Taklimakan desert and the oasis-marginal belt of western desert and the value ranges from 14 to 15 mm. The low value center of atmospheric water vapor is in the hinterland of the desert and the value is only 7―8 mm. The annual variations of atmospheric water vapor show generally the increasing trend. How- ever, the variation of atmospheric water vapor in the surrounding areas and the hinterland of the desert is insignificant during 1961―1986. The atmospheric water vapor changes abruptly after 1986 and increases clearly in the two regions. The variation trend accords with that of the precipitation’s increasing significantly in southern Xinjiang for the recent 50 years. There is great error between the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data of atmospheric water vapor and real data in theTaklimakan desert.

The vertical distribution of the root system of the desert highway shelterbelt in the hinterland of the Taklimakan desert

In this work, the vertical distribution of the root system in the Tarim desert Highway shelterbelt under high salinity water drip irrigation was investigated. The effect of site condition and shelterbelt age was studied. The root sample was collected by plant side soil column excavation. The root distribution was found to be dependent on soil texture, aspect, and plant age. In harden sand, the roots were mostly in the 0–40 cm soil. The root distribution is deep in flat sandy ground and ridge sand. In unit soil volume, the root weight of flat sandy ground was the highest. Compared with the shady slope, the sunny slope had much high total root weight, deeper root distribution, but less hair root. The root weight increased rapidly with the increase of the shelterbelt ages, and the most substantial increase was observed in the early years after forest implantation.

Holocene climatic change reconstructed from trace elements of an aeolian deposit in the southeastern Mu Us desert, northern China

In semi-arid and arid desert regions of northern China, aeolian deposits document the framework variation of an Asian monsoon during the late Quaternary. However, there is still a lack of detailed data pertaining to Holocene Asian monsoonal variation especial in the modern Asian summer monsoonal boundary belt. In this study, we reconstructed Holocene millennial-scale climatic changes in the Mu Us desert, northern China, through systematic analysis of the variation of trace elements(324 samples) in different lithological units of the palaeosol-aeolian sand deposit, in combination with14 C and OSL chronology. Statistical results, correlation and clustering analysis indicate that the high content of 11 trace elements(V, Y, Cr, Nb, P, Mn, Cu, Zr, As, Ni and Rb, represented by P) and lower Sr content corresponding to periods of palaeosol development, marked increase of vegetation, weathering degree, and enhanced Asian summer monsoonal strength. In contrast, their opposed variation are coincident with accumulated aeolian sand layers, implying weaker summer monsoons and less geochemical weathering and degraded vegetation. These associations can be considered as signaling regional humid and dry changes of the Holocene environment. Accordingly, relatively arid conditions dominated the region before 7.2 ka, and there was an optimal humid climate in 7.2-4.6 ka. Afterwards, the climate became obviously dry, accompanied with several cycles of relatively wet and dry, such as relatively wet intervals around 4.1-3.7 ka, 3.5-3.3 ka and 2.5 ka. In addition, six millennial-scale dry events were recorded, and these events were consistent with weaker Asian summer monsoonal intervals in low latitudes, declined palaeosol development and precipitation in middle latitudes, as well as increased winter monsoon and periodic ice-rafting events in high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, within limits of accuracy of existing dating ages. This possibly suggests a noteworthy synchronism between
