In this paper, the background, evolution, basic meaning, clinical application and the detail operating procedures of the differential insertion depth in filiform needle acupuncture were discussed based on the classical expositions of the Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine. It is believed that the differential insertion depth reflects the basic idea of expelling the evil Qi from the body in the application of traditional acupuncture. Since the site of evil invasion has different shades, the position of evil Qi and correct differentiation has become the operation key points of needle insertion. Apart from this, the Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine has further associated the clinical application of filiform needle insertion depth with the seasonal change of Yin and Yang, the body built of the patients, the nature of the diseases, the heat or cold pathogenic factors of the illness, the excess and deficiency of the patient, and the reinforcing and reducing function of acupuncture. These elaborations have greatly enriched the basic content of acupuncture and laid a systematic theoretical foundation of filiform needle operation. The differential insertion depth in acupuncture has its specific meaning, the emphasis of insertion depth of filiform needle with its differentiated clinical implication exemplifies the perceptual thinking features of traditional acupuncture and typical reveals the uniqueness of Chinese civilization.

High resolution geophysical instruments were used to locate many buried paleo-channels. paleo-lakes, and river mouth paleo-deltas formed during low sea level at the end of Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene. Some paleo-rivers flowed southward into the paleo-lake and others southeastward into the Paleo-South China Sea. It may be inferred from data on buried paleo-channels that sea level remained for some time at the -50m (longest time here). -100m, and -130 to -140 m(lowest level) water depths, and that corresponding paleo-coastlines were formed at the respective depths.

The sea fluxes of trace metals, POC, and settled material were studied in anoxic sea water, Saanich Inlet, B.C., Canada with sediment traps. This paper discusses the change of mass fluxes of sediment, trace metals and POC for various seasons and depths. The annual mean of settled material is 1.56 g.m-2 .a-1, 84.6 mg. m-2. a-1 for POC, 60.0 mg.m-2. a-1 for Cu, 16.5 mg.m-2.a-1 for Pb, 189 mg.m-2. a-1 for Zn, 2.20mg.m-2.a-1 for Cd,699 mg.m-2.a-1 for Fe,38.8 mg.m-2.-1 for Co, and 84.6 mg.m-2.a-1 for *** relations between the average fluxes of trace metals and POC, the fluxes of trace metals and settled matter, and the sea fluxes of trace metals and Fe are in linear progression. The resident times of elements as calculated from sea flux, are 1.1 a. for Cu, 0.014 a. for Pb, 0.50 a. for Zn, 3.8 a. for Cd, 0.16 a. for Fe, 0.39 a. for Co,and 1.14 a. for *** order of resident times is as follows: Pb-Fe-Co-Zn-Cu-Ni-Cd. Cluster analysis of data on the species similarity index offish samples taken at various sampling stations of different depths by the R /V " Dongfang " of the East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science, during the deep sea demersal fish resources survey in May - November, 1981, showed deep sea demersal fish fauna of the western part of the East China Sea can be grouped into the following communities :1)The outer continental shelf community ,2)The continental slope community, and3)The western Okinawa Trough community .The authors found that not only the species diversity index, but also the species similarity index are important criteria to reflect the structure of biotic community.

This article gives a computing method to calculate the geostrophic current. The fact that kinetic energy of geostrophic motion and geostrophic potential energy reach minimum simultaneously, Fomin’s "principle of minimum kinetic energy" is equivalent to the principle of minimum geostrophic potential energy . We concluded that horizontal geostrophic velocities at different depths are along the same direction . Combining our method with C. Wunsch’s inverse method we can obtain the velocity components along and normal to the hydrographic sections . We used and analysed CTD and current meter data of " Experiment No . 3 " exploration, December 1985-January 1986, in the west Pacific Ocean - Philippine area.

The time arrival structure of acoustic pulse signals propagating in ocean waveguides is of great significance for underwater acoustic communication and navigation. Using the deep-sea sound propagation data from the experiments respectively conducted in the East Indian Ocean(EIO) and the South China Sea(SCS) with explosion sources near the sound channel axis(SCA), long-range transmission loss(TL) and time arrival structure of acoustic pulses for different sound speed profiles(SSPs) are compared. In the EIO environment, sound energy transmitting along the SCA is relatively large, and the corresponding signals arrive first, whereas signals propagating away from the SCA arrive late. In the full receiving depth, it shows a branch structure where the waveform near the SCA arrives earlier than other depths, which is totally different with the characteristics of the sound pulse in the SCS. Combined with the parametric mathematical model of deep-sea sound channel, the influence mechanism of SSP on the time arrival structure of long-range pulse propagation is theoretically analyzed, which well explains the phenomenon observed in the two experiments.
