What kind of actions or reactions can sudden good news elicit in the experiencer?How can these actions/reactions be cognitively interpreted by others?Is there a nexus between social realities and the gospel?Using these questions as a spark,this article critically examines the cultural conceptualisations in Jjo Odi,a Yoruba gospel ballad by Elijah Akintunde.Drawing insights from Cultural Linguistics,this study argues that cultural symbols and structures(schemas,categories,and metaphors)are deployed in gospel music to capture the message of liberation from socio-economic challenges.Specifically,dance and DEAFNESS are mapped to express the kind of PERPLEXITY and ABSURDITY that characterise reaction to SUDDEN PLEASANT NEWS.The song also invokes cognitive schemas and cultural memories of dance,cultural class categories and metaphorization of dance and its internalized network of cognitive associations in the Yoruba world view to project the message of prosperity as a miracle.The study concludes that language is firmly grounded in cultural cognition and the complex socio-economic lives of Nigerians can be captured in the negotiation of spirituality in gospel songs.Future research may explore how the artistic performance of other music genres equally evoke cultural imageries in communicating other diverse issues.

One of the primary goals of launching an ocean color satellite is to obtain over the global ocean synoptic measurements of primary production(PP),a measure of phytoplankton photosynthesis.To reach this ultimate goal,in addition to precise measurements of radiance at the satellite altitude and robust data processing systems,a key requirement is to link primary production with satellitederived products,where a model must be developed and applied.Although many models have been developed in the past decades,the vertically generalized production model(VGPM)developed by Behrenfeld and Falkowski,due to its simplicity and ease of use with satellite products,has been a de facto“standard”for the estimation of PP from ocean color measurements over the past 20+years.Thus,it has significantly influenced the ocean color remote sensing and the biological oceanographic communities.In this article,we discuss the limitations of VGPM(and PP models based on chlorophyll concentration)in estimating primary production.

Short,momentary,temporary,transient,precarious,and labile are adjectives that the current post-pandemic,ecological,climatic,war,political,economic,and social contingencies have accustomed us to employ almost compulsively and indiscriminately by now,and that,beyond everything,are synonyms inter-implicit with and in the ephemerality,which deserves reconsideration in its literalness as epìheméra(for a day),that can take place through a sort of its“double”,not quite mainstream but nonetheless suggestive and perhaps even effective,such as the artistic one of dance.Therefore,it is worth pausing to try and see which streaks/implications of the ephemerality itself the dance-ephemeral conveys and/or produces:the neuralgic concretions that the latter seems to me to involve and permeate,in a perspective of re-cognition/re-discovery/awareness,are time,space and the body,evidently inter-implicated.
