Building a Novel Future: Connecting Peoples and cultures

Current humanity is experiencing extraordinary levels of material and ideal connectivity.Change being constant and stability exceptional and provisional;one has to expect a significant acceleration of change in the next hundred years.The core question is therefore:What kind of future is being shaped for the next generations,our grandchildren and great-grand children?Without going too far back in time,it is fair to say that the current world was shaped by two different,successive and antinomic global processes:imperial expansion,colonization and domination on the one hand,and resistance,struggle for liberation,and the search for a more equitable world order on the other hand.Against all the odds,European imperialism,civil war,wars of aggression,and Western ostracism,China was an influential actor in the struggle for liberation of Africa from colonialism,got its rightful place in the international world order and is now the second economy of the planet.Globalization resulted in the emergence of a de facto multipolar world,with different models of societies and organizational cultures.These are dialectic processes constantly in operation,but there is however a third crucial area of interest,generally taken granted,that of people and culture.Peaceful relations and sustainable economic development backed by greater cultural and demographic connectivity are better options for the construction of a novel future for humanity.Universities and higher education institutions can play an important role in spearheading and implementing these new orientations for the construction of a future peaceful and sustainable human world in which war will be outlawed.This paper outlines what academics can do to promote such a vision.

STUDIES ON PREPARATION OF INACTIVATED VACCINES FROM CELL cultures OF MINK ENTERITIS VIRUS (MEV) AND THEIR IMMUNITY

In this paper, superhigh reproductive rate strains of MEV with titre more than HA8192* or TCID50 log9.7 10 have been achieved both by cultivation in cell lines with different susceptibility to MEV and by isolating and identifying in field by the author. The systematic tests proved that S18 and L12 strains of MEV are the best strains for vaccine preparation. In this study, the best means for the tissue cultivation of MEV and the most advanced technological process for the production and detection of serum-free cell-cultured MEV fluids with super-high HA titre in batches in large quantities have been established for the first time. Optimum conditions for MEV inactivation were determined, and safe and effective inactivated vaccines with mineral oil or A1(OH)3 gel adjuvant were successfully prepared with serum-free cell-cultured MEV fluids. A two-stage process with temperature-shift for enhanced anthocyanin production in strawberry cell suspension cultures

A two-stage process with temperature-shift has been developed to enhance the anthocyanin yield in suspension cultures of strawberry cells. The effect of the temperature-shift interval and the shift-time point was investigated for the optimization of this strategy. In this process, strawberry cells were grown at 30℃ （the optimum temperature for cell growth） for a certain period as the first stage, with the temperature shifted to a lower temperature for the second stage. In response to the temperature shift-down, anthoeyanin synthesis was stimulated and a higher content could be achieved than that at both boundary temperatures but cell growth was suppressed. When the lower boundary temperature was deereased, cell growth was lowered and a delayed, sustained maximum anthocyanin content was achieved. Anthocyanin synthesis was strongly influeneed by the shift-time point but cell growth was not. The Comparison of Chinese and Western cultures from the Perspective of Chinese Culture “Going Global”: With Confucius and Socrates’ Thoughts as Examples

Chinese culture “going global” is an inevitable requirement for China’s economic and social development.As an important part of Chinese traditional culture,the dissemination of Confucian thought is just the spread of Chinese culture.Therefore,the spread of Chinese Confucian thought abroad is also the key to Chinese culture “going global”.However,there are some cultural hinders between China and the West due to the differences in cultures.On the basis of summarizing Confucius and Socrates’ thoughts,this paper analyzes their essence of thoughts by contrast,which represent the eastern and Western cultures respectively.From the perspective of cross-cultural communication,the paper adopts the methods of multiculturalism,criticism and down-to-earth attitudes to deal with Chinese and Western cultures in order to make Chinese go global and share China’s wisdom with the world.

Transgressing Local Planning cultures,the SPURS Program,and the International Studios

Today, we are living in a more interconnected world, as globalization has already reached most urban confines of the planet. However, as this phenomenon becomes ubiquitous, understanding how local planning cultures interact with the effects of such globalization has become a hurdle for the discipline of planning and for the educational institutions attempting to prepare planners for today's multicultural planning environment. Here I present my reflection on the Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies(hereinafter referred to as SPURS) and the accompanying MITDUSP abroad planning courses. I offer these experiences as windows into the complexity of teaching multicultural audiences and preparing planners to perform in a varied set of contexts. In this 21^(st) century multicultural world, we need to create a new globalized planner, not one raised on the belief of a globally homogenized culture but one always aware of the cultural and professional differences and open to learning from them.

The article examines a variety of local cultures in their relationship with modern Christianity as a global institution.The review summarizes three case studies conducted by the author in Israel and Canada over the past decade.These studies,reviewed in the article through various lenses and considered as three different sociocultural narratives,tell the reader how music,consciously or unconsciously,determines the contours of the cultural and religious identity of the groups whose members are natives or resettled residents of the Holy Land,Old and New Worlds,China and Australia.An updated analysis of ethnographic data points to local cultures as the true indicators of global change.

Over-Expressing Prohibitin (PHB) in Neuronal cultures Exacerbates Cell Death Following Hydrogen Peroxide and L-Glutamic Acid Induced Injury

Using proteomics, previous work in our laboratory identified five mitochondrial related proteins [citrate synthase (CS), glucose-regulated protein 75 (GRP75), heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), prohibitin (PHB), voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1)] to be differentially expressed in primary cortical neuronal cultures following preconditioning treatments?[1] [2]. To investigate a protective or damaging role of these five proteins in neurons, we used RNAi constructs to knockdown and adenoviral vectors to over-express the proteins in cortical neuronal cultures prior to exposure to three ischemia-related injury models: excitotoxicity (L-glutamic acid), oxidative stress (hydrogen peroxide) and in vitro ischemia (oxygen-glucose deprivation). We observed that down-regulating these mitochondrial proteins had no effect on neuronal viability, in any injury model. By contrast, over-expression of PHB exacerbated cell death in the hydrogen peroxide and L-glutamic acid injury models. These findings indicate that PHB plays a neurodamaging role following oxidative and excitotoxic stress and suggests that the protein is a potential therapeutic target for the design of drugs to limit neuronal death following cerebral ischemia and other forms of brain injury.

Methodology Article: Can Ruminal Reducing Power Assessed in Batch cultures be Comparable to <i>in Vivo</i>Measurements?

In ruminant field of digestive research, the appeal to methods of less invasive studies and reproducing the in vivo conditions is essential. The objective of the present study was to determine whether the conditions created with the proposed in vitro batch culture was an accurate reproduction of the physico-chemical and fermentative ruminal conditions observed in vivo. Two experiments were conducted to compare ruminal reducing power measured in vitro, i.e. in batch cultures or, in vivo i.e. in live animals: dairy cows at maintenance (Experiment 1) and lactating dairy cows (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, at the beginning of incubation period, in vitro redox potential (Eh), pH and Clark’s exponent (rH) values were significantly higher than in vivo (+42 mV, +0.25 and +1.9, respectively) whereas volatile fatty acids (VFA) contents were 2.6 fold lower on average. At the end of incubation, Eh, rH values and VFA contents were similar between both methods whereas pH still remained different. In Experiment 2, at the beginning and at the end of incubation period, in vitro Eh, pH and rH values differed significantly than in vivo. As a result, the in vitro method did not provide a tool to evaluate accurately the level of the reducing status of ruminal milieu compared with in vivo measurement. Nonetheless, it provided strong reducing conditions after 8 h of incubation with levels of rH relatively closed to those observed in vivo. In vitro batch culture could be a good alternative to in vivo trials for a screening approach from an ethic and economic point of view in ruminant field of research.

Establishment and Optimization Growth of Shoot Buds-Derived Callus and Suspension Cell cultures of <i>Kaempferia parviflora</i>

Callus and suspension cells culture of Kaempferia parviflora was successfully established. Meristematic shoots can be used for utilization of plant cell biosynthetic capabilities for obtaining useful products from valuable medicinal plant to meet out the pharmaceutical demand and also for studying the metabolism. The medium containing combination of 0.2 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 0.2 mg/L napthyleneacetic acid (NAA) promoted the highest callus induction at 20%. Transferring the initiated callus on the medium with 1 mg/L 2,4-D enhanced the proliferation rate up to maximum fresh weight of 6.71 gm. Growth curve of cultured cells revealed that the cells continued to grow until 50 days of culture and showed the highest peak (fresh weight) at 40 days in all different initial weight tested ( 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 gram). Isolated embryogenic callus was found to produce the highest in weight when suspended in liquid medium supplemented with 1 mg/L 2,4-D at 110 rpm resulted 13.5 gram fresh weight and 1080 mg dry weight.
