Egg-spot matching in common cuckoo parasitism of the oriental reed warbler: effects of host nest availability and egg rejection

Background: The success of cuckoo parasitism is thought to depend largely on the extent of egg matching between cuckoo and host eggs, since poor-matching cuckoo egg would lead to more frequent egg rejection by the host. In this study, we investigated how egg-spot matching between the Common cuckoo(Cuculus canorus) and its host, the Oriental Reed Warbler(Acrocephalus orientalis) is affected by the local parasitism rate, nest availability in breeding synchronization and egg ***: We used the paired design of parasitized and their nearest non-parasitized nests where breeding occurred simultaneously to compare egg-spot matching. The image analysis was used to compare four eggshell pattern variables, namely spot size, density, coverage on the different areas of egg surface, and the distribution on the whole egg surface. Egg recognition experiments were conducted to test the effect of egg spots on egg rejection by the ***: Our results show that much better matching in almost all spot parameters tested on the side of the egg and the spot distribution on the whole egg occurred in parasitized nests than in non-parasitized nests. Matching of spot density between cuckoo and host eggs in parasitized nests increased with the synchronization between temporal availability of nests and the egg-laying period of female cuckoos. Egg recognition experiments in which the warbler eggs were deliberately painted with extra spots led to a significantly higher egg rejection rate(78.3%) than of unpainted ***: Our data suggest that both the high temporal encounter rate between cuckoo and warbler nests as well as the high egg rejection ability of the host are important factors for egg-spot matching of the cuckoos.

CSFW-SC: cuckoo Search Fuzzy-Weighting Algorithm for Subspace Clustering Applying to High-Dimensional Clustering

Aimed at the issue that traditional clustering methods are not appropriate to high-dimensional data, a cuckoo search fuzzy-weighting algorithm for subspace clustering is presented on the basis of the exited soft subspace clustering algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, a novel objective function is firstly designed by considering the fuzzy weighting within-cluster compactness and the between-cluster separation, and loosening the constraints of dimension weight matrix. Then gradual membership and improved cuckoo search, a global search strategy, are introduced to optimize the objective function and search subspace clusters, giving novel learning rules for clustering. At last, the performance of the proposed algorithm on the clustering analysis of various low and high dimensional datasets is experimentally compared with that of several competitive subspace clustering algorithms. Experimental studies demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can obtain better performance than most of the existing soft subspace clustering algorithms.

Does nest sanitation elicit egg rejection in an open-cup nesting cuckoo host rejecter?

Background: Nest sanitation behavior is one of the most important means to ensure high reproductive efficiency. In avian brood parasitism, nest sanitation behavior may be a pre-adaptation of host birds that allows them to identify the parasitic eggs, so that egg discrimination behavior may have evolved from nest sanitation behavior. However, whether nest sanitation behavior could improve egg rejection in cuckoo hosts was ***: In this study, we investigated the relationship between nest sanitation and egg discrimination behavior in a potential cuckoo host, the Brown-breasted Bulbul(Pycnonotus xanthorrhous) with two experimental groups. In the first group, we added a blue, non-mimetic egg to the nest of the host, while in the second group we added a blue, non-mimetic egg and a peanut ***: The results showed that in the first group, the probability of rejecting the non-mimetic eggs was 53.8%(n = 26 nests). In comparison, all of the Brown-breasted Bulbuls in the second group were able to rapidly remove the peanut shells from the nest, but only 52.6%(n = 19 nests) rejected the non-mimetic eggs. The rejection rates of the non-mimetic eggs in both experimental groups were not significantly ***: Our study indicated that nest sanitation behavior of Brown-breasted Bulbuls did not influence their egg recognition and that egg discrimination ability of Brown-breasted Bulbuls was not directly related to nest sanitation behavior.

Nest sanitation facilitates egg recognition in the common tailorbird, a plaintive cuckoo host

Nest sanitation is a ubiquitous behavior in birds and functions to remove foreign objects that accidentally have fallen into their nests. In avian brood parasitism, the host’s ability to recognize and reject parasitic eggs is a specific anti-parasitic behavior. Previous studies have shown that egg recognition may have evolved from nest sanitation behavior;however, few studies have offered evidence in support of this hypothesis. In the current study, we added one real white egg and one model egg to the nests of common tailorbirds (Orthotomus sutorius), the main host of plaintive cuckoos (Cacomantis merulinus), to explore the relationship between egg recognition ability in hosts and nest sanitation behavior. Results showed that common tailorbirds rejected both non-mimetic blue model eggs and mimetic white model eggs at a similar rate of 100%, but only rejected 16.1% of mimetic real white eggs. The egg rejection behavior of common tailorbirds towards both real and model eggs was consistent. However, when both blue model eggs and real white eggs were simultaneously added to their nests, the probability of rejecting the mimetic real white egg increased to 50%. The addition of blue model eggs not only increased the occurrence of nest sanitation behavior but also increased the ability to recognize and reject parasitic eggs. This suggests that nest sanitation may facilitate egg rejection in common tailorbird hosts.

Energy Efficient Computation of Data Fusion in Wireless Sensor Networks Using cuckoo Based Particle Approach (CBPA)

Energy efficient communication is a plenary issue in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Contemporary energy efficient optimization schemes are focused on reducing power consumption in various aspects of hardware design, data processing, network protocols and operating system. In this paper, optimization of network is formulated by cuckoo Based Particle Approach (CBPA). Nodes are deployed randomly and organized as static clusters by cuckoo Search (CS). After the cluster heads are selected, the information is collected, aggregated and forwarded to the base station using generalized particle approach algorithm. The Generalized Particle Model Algorithm (GPMA) transforms the network energy consumption problem into dynamics and kinematics of numerous particles in a force-field. The proposed approach can significantly lengthen the network lifetime when compared to traditional methods.

Energy efficient routing is one of the major thrust areas in Wireless Sensor Communication Networks (WSCNs) and it attracts most of the researchers by its valuable applications and various challenges. Wireless sensor networks contain several nodes in its terrain region. Reducing the energy consumption over the WSCN has its significance since the nodes are battery powered. Various research methodologies were proposed by researchers in this area. One of the bio-inspired computing paradigms named cuckoo search algorithm is used in this research work for finding the energy efficient path and routing is performed. Several performance metrics are taken into account for determining the performance of the proposed routing protocol such as throughput, packet delivery ratio, energy consumption and delay. Simulation is performed using NS2 and the results shows that the proposed routing protocol is better in terms of average throughput, and average energy consumption.

Medical image enhancement is an essential process for superior disease diagnosis as well as for detection of pathological lesion accurately. Computed Tomography (CT) is considered a vital medical imaging modality to evaluate numerous diseases such as tumors and vascular lesions. However, speckle noise corrupts the CT images and makes the clinical data analysis ambiguous. Therefore, for accurate diagnosis, medical image enhancement is a must for noise removal and sharp/clear images. In this work, a medical image enhancement algorithm has been proposed using log transform in an optimization framework. In order to achieve optimization, a well-known meta-heuristic algorithm, namely: cuckoo search (CS) algorithm is used to determine the optimal parameter settings for log transform. The performance of the proposed technique is studied on a low contrast CT image dataset. Besides this, the results clearly show that the CS based approach has superior convergence and fitness values compared to PSO as the CS converge faster that proves the efficacy of the CS based technique. Finally, Image Quality Analysis (IQA) justifies the robustness of the proposed enhancement technique.

面对日益严峻的信息安全形势,传统恶意代码检测所使用的静态分析技术,不但检测效率随着恶意软件数量的激增而降低,并且,由于加壳、加密、混淆等技术的运用,其检测有效性也呈下降趋势。动态分析技术通过分析程序运行过程中的行为来对程序的恶意性进行判定,天然地跨过了加壳、加密、混淆等障碍,但是,如何结合沙箱技术有效进行自动分析、如何提高分析效率、如何有效描述程序行为及如何通过行为对程序的恶意性进行分类,就成为亟待研究人员解决的问题。本文立足目前的系统安全形势,在对恶意代码分析研究的基础上,设计并实现了一个恶意程序行为分析及检测系统。具体工作内容如下:1.研究Windows系统下恶意程序的行为,确定使用Windows API作为恶意代码行为研究的基本数据;并对Windows API依据行为效果进行筛选、分类,给出各类中对行为影响显著、语义特征突出的API,如CreateFile、CreateProcess、RegOpenKey等;2.研究cuckoo平台API获取情况,运用领域专用语言根据cuckoo约束实现对所给出的Windows API的HOOK,以有效获取程序运行时数据;3.针对恶意行为特征,总结恶意行为模式,给出行为模型、辅助行为模型以及恶意性行为模型。基于所获取的样本运行时数据,结合上述模型实现对样本行为的自动化分析,并依据行为类别归纳行为分析结果,生成行为分析报告;4.针对样本行为分析结果,结合反映行为具体操作内容的API参数,本文抽象出能够反应程序行为的629维离散特征向量,运用SVM算法,实现了凭借样本行为对其恶意性进行分类的目的;5.本文实现的平台具有良好的拓展性,根据对恶意性代码的不断研究,可以不断根据本文所设计的策略对样本运行时数据、行为模型、离散特征进行拓展,以提高检测率以及丰富样本的行为描述信息。实验表明,本文设计并实现的系统,能够有效获取样本运行时信息并分析样本的行为,基于行为能够有效抽象出行为向量,用于机器学习中对样本进行分类。

为满足PDM海量数据存储与高并发访问要求,构建基于企业私有云的PDM系统成为未来的必然选择。现有文件系统数据完整性校验算法多是基于RSA公钥密码技术,但这种技术突出问题是需要大量的模指数运算,其计算开销较大,尤其在大数据存储的条件下。针对PDM文件的大数据校验和数据动态性问题,提出基于cuckoo filter的数据完整性校验算法,以cuckoo filter作为校验标签存储结构,将基于哈希算法中的校验哈希值进行压缩,在满足PDM动态数据校验要求的前提下,实现轻量级的完整性校验。最后论证了该方案的安全性,并通过性能分析和实验验证了该方法是高效可行的。
