There is a lack of accurate pediatric reference intervals(RIs) in China, with most commonly used RIs established without consideration of the effect of age and gender. The Pediatric Reference Intervals in China(PRINCE) project aims to establish and verify pediatric RIs for 31 common laboratory measurands.The project will be a large, multicenter cross-sectional study:14,490 healthy children and adolescents aged up to 19 years will be surveyed by 10 children's hospitals and one pediatric department of a university hospital. To evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of the study methods, 602 children were surveyed in the pilot phase of the PRINCE study in April 2017: it found that some measurands were distinctly age dependent and that there were differences between values for males and females. The results of the pilot study affirmed the necessity of the PRINCE project for Chinese pediatrics. The pilot also indicated potential difficulties in the full survey, e.g., difficulties in recruiting children aged under 3 years and insufficient collection of blood samples from infants. The operation of the PRINCE project has been modified based on the findings in the pilot study toward improving the validity of the PRINCE project and promoting its openness and transparency.

Association between iron deficiency and prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity in pregnant and non-pregnant women of childbearing age: a cross-sectional study

Background: Thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) is prevalent among women of reproductive age and associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between iron nutritional status and the prevalence of TAI in women during the first trimester of pregnancy and in non-pregnant women of childbearing age. Methods: cross-sectional analysis of 7463 pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy and 2185 non-pregnant women of childbearing age nested within the sub-clinical hypothyroid in early pregnancy study, a prospective collection of pregnant and non-pregnant women’s data, was conducted in Liaoning province of China between 2012 and 2015. Serum thyrotropin, free thyroxine, thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAbs), thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAbs), serum ferritin, and urinary iodine were measured. Iron deficiency (ID) was defined as serum ferritin 150 μg/L. TPOAb-positive was defined as >34 U/mL and TgAb-positive was defined as >115 U/mL. Multilevel logistic regression was conducted to examine the association between TAI and different iron nutritional status after adjusting for potential confounders. Results: The prevalence of isolated TPOAb-positive was markedly higher in women with ID than those without ID, in both pregnant and non-pregnant women (6.28% vs. 3.23%,χ^2 = 10.264, P = 0.002;6.25% vs. 3.70%,χ^2 = 3,791, P = 0.044;respectively). After adjusting for confounders and the cluster effect of hospitals, ID remained associated with TPOAb-positive in pregnant and non-pregnant women (odds ratio [OR]: 2.111, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.241–3.591, P = 0.006;and OR: 1.822, 95% CI: 1.011–3.282, P = 0.046, respectively). Conclusion: ID was associated with a higher prevalence of isolated TPOAbs-positive, but not with isolated TgAb-positive, in both pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy and non-pregnant women of childbearing age, while IO was not associated with either isolated TPOAb-positive or isolated TgA

Hepatitis E virus(HEV)infection is a common public health problem in developing countries.However,the current prevalence of HEV and the relationship of HEV genotype between swine and human within high-density pig-farming areas in central China are still inadequately understood.Here,cross-sectional serological and genotypic surveys of HEV among the 1232 general population,273 workers occupationally exposed to swine,and 276 pigs in a high-density pig-breeding area,were undertaken by ELISA and nested RT-PCR methods.Anti-HEV IgG was detected in 26.22%of general population and 48.35%of occupational workers.The prevalence of swine serum HEV-Ag was 6.52%.The prevalence of anti-HEV IgG was significantly higher among the workers occupationally exposed to swine than among the general population.An increased HEV seropositivity risk among the general population was associated with either being a peasant or male and was very strongly associated with the increase of age.Among the occupationally exposed group,the prevalence of anti-HEV IgG antibodies increased with age and working years.Among the 30 HEV-IgM-positive people,the infection rates of clerks in the public,peasants,pork retailers,and pig farmers were higher than those of others.A phylogenetic analysis revealed that all the isolates belonged to subgenotype 4d,and four people and four pigs shared 97.04%-100%sequence homology.This study revealed a high HEV seroprevalence among the general population and workers occupationally exposed to swine in the Anlu City,and supports the notion that swine are a source of human HEV infection.

Association of ABO blood groups with the severity of coronary artery disease: a cross-sectional study

Objective To investigate whether ABO blood groups is associated with the severity of coronary artery disease(CAD). Methods Between January 2015 and December 2017, 1425 first diagnosed CAD patients confirmed by selective coronary angiography were recruited into this cross-sectional study, and their baseline characteristics, ABO blood groups, Gensini score were collected. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to test the association between the severity of CAD and ABO blood groups. Results The Gensini score was significantly higher in the blood group A than in the non-A groups(41.2 ± 32 vs. 38 ± 27;P = 0.026). After adjusting for age, male, smoking, family history of CAD, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia, multivariate linear regression indicated that blood group A was associated with the severity of CAD(β= 3.298, 95% CI: 0.91–6.505, P = 0.044). In diabetes group, A blood type was also associated with increased Gensini score(P = 0.02) after adjusting for age, male, family history of CAD, hypercholesterolemia, smoking and hypertension. Conclusion In this cross-sectional study, the data indicated that blood group A was an independent risk factor of severity of CAD in Chinese population and Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes.

Geometry Parameter Optimization of Large cross-sectional S-Shaped Bent Rib Waveguides for Silicon Based Optical Switches

By using a genetic algorithm, geometry parameters of large cross-sectional S-bend rib waveguides are optimized aiming at the least total loss when the propagation loss is considered. Optimized results axe presented as an example of S-bend rib waveguides based on silicon-on-insulator （SOI） 4 × 4 optical switches. The value of 2 dB/cm is given to the propagation loss according to the experimental results. The simulation results indicate that the total loss drops from 1.0002rib down to 0.4375dB without considering a lateral offset. If the offset is adopted, the total loss reduces from 0.5463dB to 0.2365dB. In addition, the effect of the rib height ratio on the loss is analysed, and the optimal ratio is obtained to be 0.55.

Relationship between sonographically measured median nerve cross-sectional area and presence of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic subjects

BACKGROUND Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus resulting from direct damage by hyperglycemia to the nerves and/or ischemia by microvascular injury to the endoneurial vessels which supply the nerves. Median nerve is one of the peripheral nerves commonly affected in diabetic neuropathy. The median nerve size has been studied in non-Nigerian diabetic populations. In attempt to contribute to existing literature, a study in a Nigerian population is needed.AIM To evaluate the cross-sectional area(CSA) of the median nerve using B-mode ultrasonography(USS) and the presence of peripheral neuropathy(PN) in a cohort of adult diabetic Nigerians.METHODS Demographic and anthropometric data of 85 adult diabetes mellitus(DM) and 85 age-and sex-matched apparently healthy control(HC) subjects were taken. A complete physical examination was performed on all study subjects to determine the presence of PN and modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument(MNSI) was used to grade its severity. Venous blood was taken from the study subjects for fasting lipid profile(FLP), fasting blood glucose(FBG) and glycated haemoglobin(HbA1 c) while their MN CSA was evaluated at a point 5 cm proximal to(5 cmCATL) and at the carpal tunnel(CATL) by high-resolution Bmode USS. Data was analysed using SPSS version 22.RESULTS The mean MN CSA was significantly thicker in DM subjects compared to the HC at 5 cmCATL(P 0.05). However, the severity of DPN had no additional effect on MN CSA 5 cm proximal to and at the CATL. There was no significant association between MN CSA and duration of DM and glycemic control.CONCLUSION Thickening of the MN CSA at 5 cmCATL and CATL is seen in DM. Presence of DPN is associated with worse thickening of the MN CSA at the CATL but not at5 cmCATL. Severity of DPN, duration of DM, and glycemic control had no additional effect on the

Classifying rheumatoid arthritis by Traditional Chinese Medicine Zheng: a multi-center cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE:To assess the relationship between disease symptoms and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome (Zheng) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.METHODS:RA Patients were recruited in Guang'anmen Hospital,China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University,and diagnosed with a particular RA Zheng from their symptoms.Demographic characteristics,self-reported symptoms,and blood samples were collected from patients.All data were input into EpiData and analyzed using SPSS software.RESULTS:The study included 302 RA patients (age range:18-86 years).All patients were Chinese,and 85.1% were women.Cold and fatigue triggers were reported by 8.6% of patients,followed by triggers such as childbirth (4.3%),cold (3.0%),dampness (2.0%),menopause (1.3%),and psychentonia (0.7%).The most prevalent Zheng was dampness and heat blockage (Shire Yuzu in Chinese,SRYZ),diagnosed in 39.4% of patients (119),followed by phlegm and stagnation blockage (Tanyu Bizu,TYBZ) in 21.5%,liver and kidney deficiency (Ganshen Buzu,GSBZ) in 18.5%,dual deficiency of Qi and blood (Qixue Liangxu,QXLX) in 9.6%,cold and dampness blockage (Hanshi Bizu,HSBZ) in 6%,and wind and dampness blockage (Fengshi Bizu,FSBZ) in 5%.Increased length of time since RA diagnosis was associated with the GSBZ group.Patients diagnosed with the SRYZ Zheng had the highest disease activity score.Patients diagnosed with the QXLX Zheng had the lowest blood platelet counts;patients diagnosed with the QXLX and HSBZ Zhengs had lower C-reactive protein levels and lower health assessment questionnaire scores.Patients diagnosed with the GSBZ and QXLX Zhengs had the highest health assessment questionnaire scores.CONCLUSION:The specific Zheng was related to RA characteristics.The findings suggest that eliminating dampness,cooling the patient,and promoting blood circulation may assist in treating severe RA.

cross-sectional investigation of radiation damage of 2 MeV proton-irradiated silicon carbide

cross-sectional investigation is an important method to study ion irradiation effects in the depth direction. In this study, 2 Me V H^+was implanted in 6 H-SiC single crystals to investigate the effects of light ion irradiation on SiC. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy(SEM) were carried out on crosssectional samples to reveal the in-depth damage states and dopant behavior. The most damaged region is a little shallower than that predicted by the SRIM procedure,owing to the uncertainty in SRIM simulations. Layered structures representing zones of varying damage after2 MeV H ion irradiation are clearly observed. Two bands are observed in SEM images, of which on band corresponds to the damage peak, while the other band at the end of the H ion-affected area is probably a result of H diffusion propelled by a hydrogen-rich layer during irradiation.A charge accumulation effect related with conductivity on the sample surfaces during SEM tests is observed in theH-implanted area. A model is proposed to explain these phenomena.

cross-sectional imaging work-up of adrenal masses

Advances in medical imaging with current cross-section modalities enable non-invasive characterization of adrenal lesions. Computed tomography (CT) provides characterization with its non-contrast and wash-out features. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is helpful in further characterization using chemical shift imaging (CSI) and MR spectroscopy. For differentiating between benign and malignant masses, positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is useful with its qualitative analysis, as well as its ability to detect the presence of extra-adrenal metastases in cancer patients. The workup for an indeterminate adrenal mass includes evaluation with a non-contrast CT. If a lesion is less than 10 Hounsfield Units on a non-contrast CT, it is a benign lipid-rich adenoma and no further work-up is required. For the indeterminate adrenal masses, a lipid-poor adenoma can be differentiated from a metastasis utilizing CT wash-out features. Also, MRI is beneficial with CSI and MR spectroscopy. If a mass remains indeterminate, PET imaging may be of use, in which benign lesions demonstrate low or no fluorodeoxyglucose activity. In the few cases in which adrenal lesions remain indeterminate, surgical sampling such as percutaneous biopsy can be performed.

Commentary on ＇Awareness of and attitudes toward infertility and its treatment： a cross-sectional survey of men in a United States primary care population＇

Involuntary childlessness occurs in about 6%-9% of all couples in central Europe,1 the incidence in the Unites States is comparable.2 At least 50% of all couples affected do not seek medical help？ This may have different reasons. In the present article, the authors point out that awareness and familiarity with infertility is greater in high socioeconomic status men but did not differ by race. In contrast, non-Caucasian men indicated that the infertility would be a serious condition for them; moreover, they are concerned about infertility and believe that it impairs a man＇s quality-of-life. Thus, lack of awareness of the condition of infertility and of its treatment options may contribute to previously described disparities in the treatment of infertility.
