When rock samples are loaded until macroscopic fractures develop,the failure process can be divided into several stages based on axial and lateral strain responses or the acoustic emission sequence during uniaxial compression *** stress thresholds may be identified:the crack closure stress σ,crack initiation stress σ,crack damage stress crc(j,and uniaxial compressive strength σ;these may be used as a warning indicator for rock *** investigated the crack damage stressσ,its threshold,and a possible relationship between σand the uniaxial compressive *** σ of different rock types were compiled from previous studies based on uniaxial compression *** results showed that the overall averages and standard deviations of σ/σ f°r igneous,metamorphic,and sedimentary rocks were 0.78(±0.11),.85(±0.11),and.73(±0.18),*** were no significant differences in σ/σ between the different rock types,except that the sedimentary rock had a slightly larger standard deviation attributed to the variation of porosity in the samples,while the metamorphic rock had higher average σ/σ resulting from the small statistical sample *** excluding the higher-porosity(>10%) rock samples,the averages and standard deviations of σ/σ for igneous,metamorphic,and sedimentary rocks were .78(±0.09),.85(±0.09),and.78(±0.11),*** results imply that the rock origin process(i.e.,igneous,metamorphic,and sedimentary) has a minimal effect on σ/σ.The ratio σ/σ could be an essential intrinsic property for lowporosity rocks,which could be used in rock engineering for predicting the failure process.

Based on the two-dimensional renormalization group model,which can consider the stress transfer mechanism,in the present paper,the theoretical quantitative correlation between the threshold of the crack damage stress(σ)and the uniaxial compressive strength{σ)was *** results indicate that the normalized quantityσ/σdecreases as the shape parameter m increases,and that it gradually tends towards a constant horizontal asymptote that *** addition,the experimental results ofσ/σobtained in previous studies using different rock types were *** this analysis,it was found that the overall average and the standard deviation ofσ/σfor lowporosity rock samples is.80(±0.10),which would appear to be approximately consistent with the theoretical *** preliminary study indicates that the normalized quantityσ/σmight be an intrinsic property of low-porosity rocks and thus could be regarded as a potential indicator for the failure prediction of laboratory-scale rock samples.

It was found that the crack damage stress threshold,σ,is a phase transition point during the deformation process of rock and is equivalent to the unstable fixed point of renormalization group ***,a relationship exists between the renormahzation group theory and the rock deformation process,through which we can investigate the critical behavior of rock ***,an improved renormahzation group model,which takes into account the different stress transfer mechanisms that are closer to the actual mechanical processes,is introduced to reveal the critical behavior of the rock deformation ***,a quantitative relationship between the crack damage stress threshold and peak strength,σ/σ*** theoretically *** test the theoretical relationship we additionally present experimental results of an investigation of the ratio of the crack damage stress threshold to uniaxial compressive strength,σ/σ,based on different rock *** results show that the overall average and standard deviation of σ/σis 0.80(±0.10) for low-porosity igneous,metamorphic and sedimentary rocks,a figure that is closer to the theoretical solution of σ/σfrom the improved renormahzation group model with a stress transfer mechanism of STM — 1/*** study implies that theσ/σratio may be intrinsic to low-porosity rocks,and therefore can be considered as a reliable predictor of the peak strength of rock samples in the laboratory.
