Attitude toward preventive counseling and healthy practices among medical students at a Colombian university

Unhealthy behaviors of medical students influence their attitudes toward preventive counseling. The burden of chronic diseases is continually growing in developing countries, emphasizing the need for the increased role of general practitioners in preventive counseling. The objective of this study was to describe the effect of medical training on the risk profiles and attitudes of medical students toward preventive counseling in a Colombian university. Students in their first and fifth years of training were surveyed using the ＂Healthy Doctor = Healthy Patient＂ questionnaire to assess counseling attitudes; personal practices, such as risky drinking, smoking, inadequate nutrition, and non-compliance with physical activity recommendations; and the university environment. The association among these components was estimated, as well as the effect of the university environment. Risky drinking and smoking decreased from first to fifth year （59.3% vs. 37.1%, P = 0.021 and 31.5~ vs. 25.9%, P = 0.51, respectively）, whereas inadequate nutrition and non-compliance with physical activity recommendations increased. Physical activity （PA） was associated with positive counseling attitude （ORs： nutrition 7.6; alcohol 5.2; PA 10.6）. Areas governed by institutional policies that are emphasized in the curriculum positively affected student practices. PA promoted preventive counseling and healthy lifestyles most effectively. Universities should therefore strengthen their preventive medicine curricula and modify social determinants.

Context:Prevalence of nutritional anemia among Saudi female and children is evident and has been reflected in different studies,most of researchers conclude that there is a gap in dietary coun-seling in addition to the poor awareness of community about appropriate dietary habits;this study is trying to assess counseling behavior and training competency of family physician at primary health centers with respect to nutritional ***:Study objective is to assess general beliefs,practice,and level of training in coun-seling by family ***:This is a cross-sectional study design;data collected using self-administered questionnaire provided to the doctor at clinic ***:The most commonly learned counseling technique in order as follows motivational interviewing(68%),cognitive behavioral therapy(58%),and 15-Minute Hour approach(53%).Conclusion:This study confirms the presence of positive counseling beliefs and practices by family physicians;however,the result is also reflects the current reluctant state of family physicians in devoting ample time for nutritional anemia counseling.

Effect of a counseling-supported treatment with the Mediterranean diet and physical activity on the severity of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

AIM To determine the clinical effectiveness of nutritional counseling on reduction of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) severity, weight loss, metabolic and anthropometric indexes and liver *** Forty-six adults with NAFLD received a 6-mo clinical and a dietary intervention(based on Mediterranean diet) carried out respectively by a gastroenterologist and a nutritionist with counseling license. The counseling process consisted of monthly meeting(about 45 min each). The effect of the treatment was evaluated monitoring liver enzymes, metabolic parameters, cardiovascular risk indexes, NAFLD severity [assessed by ultrasound(US)] and related indexes. All parameters were assessed at baseline. Biochemistry was also assessed at mid-and end-interventions and US was repeated at *** The percentage of patients with steatosis grade equal or higher than 2 was reduced from 93% to 48% and steatosis regressed in 9 patients(20%). At the end of the treatment the end-point concerning the weight(i.e., a 7% weight reduction or achievement/maintenance of normal weight) was accomplished by 25 out of 46 patients(i.e., 54.3%). As far as the liver enzymes is concerned, all three liver enzymes significantly decrease during the treatment the normalization was particularly evident for the ALT enzyme(altered values reduced from 67% down to 11%). Several parameters, i.e., BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, AST, ALT, GGT, HDL, serum glucose, Tot-Chol/HDL, LDL/HDL, TG/HDL, AIP, HOMA, FLI, Kotronen index, VAI, NAFLD liver fat score and LAP, showed a significant improvement(P < 0.01) between baseline and *** Outcomes of this study further strengthen the hypothesis that Med Diet and more active lifestyle can be considered a safe therapeutic approach for reducing risk and severity of NAFLD and related disease states. Outpatient prevention counseling for malaria in northwest Nigeria: A single-centre descriptive cross-sectional study

Objective:The current systematic review aimed to assess the impact of smoking cessation counseling(SCC)on patients’short-and long-term mor tality after acute myocardial infarction(AMI).Methods:The Cochrane guidelines were used to conduct a systematic review of Medline(Pub Med),Science Direct,CINAHL Cochrane database,and Google Scholar for studies on the impact of SCC on AMI patients’mor ***:Five studies were found to meet the predefined inclusion *** patients were not routinely counseled to quit smoking during their post-AMI hospital *** showed a reduction in mor tality among AMI patients’who received SCC compared with patients who did not receive ***:SCC during hospitalization and after discharge is a simple and cost-effective intervention that improves AMI patients’survival.

Acceptability of HIV Testing and counseling by Antenatal Clients of a Tertiary Institution in Northern Nigeria

Background: HIV testing and counseling (HTC) plays a central role in specific prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) interventions, as these interventions depend on the woman knowing her HIV status. Over ninety percent of HIV infection in children is acquired through mother-to-child transmission. Objectives: This study assessed pregnant women’s knowledge of HIV/AIDS, their awareness of HIV testing and counseling, and compared the uptake of HTC to the previously practiced voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) in a teaching hospital in northern Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A pre-tested, structured interview questionnaire was administered on a cross-section survey of 270 antenatal clients in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Nigeria. Information about knowledge of HIV/AIDS and attitude towards HTC was elicited among respondents. Results: Eighty-nine percent of respondents were aware of HIV/AIDS.?The knowledge of route of disease transmission was high, with 87.4% and 81.1% of studyparticipants mentioning sexual activity and mother-to-child transmission, respectively. Majority of respondents (98.9%) were aware of HTC and approved of it (91.1%) while 7.8% declined and the remaining 1.1% were undecided. Fourteen percent of respondents didn’t approve of retesting in labour. Sixty-eight percent of respondents were aware of interventions to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Switching from VCT to HTC has dramatically improved the uptake of testing from 78.9% in 2006 to 91.1% in 2012. Conclusion: Routine HIV testing and counseling is more acceptable than voluntary counseling and testing among antenatal clients. Although the awareness and uptake of HTC were quite high among the antenatal clients, there is still a need to intensify health education and incorporate husbands into the counseling session when necessary to convince the remaining minority who are still ignorant of the benefits of HTC.

Intervention Strategies of Excessive Masturbation for a 19-Years Youth: Experience of counseling Intervention

Introduction: Excessive masturbation has for long been reported to affect youths with intervention strategies to intervene with this problem remaining unclear. This study aimed at determining the underlying factors for excessive masturbation, its effects and intervention strategies used. Methods: This was a case study design for a youth aged 19 years;affected by excessive masturbation. Data were collected through individual counseling and intervention. It involved 15 counseling sessions which were run in nine months in a three weeks interval. The sessions involved narration and exploration of the causes and effects of masturbation. Counseling intervention was built in a vicious circle. Results: Several factors, effects and intervention strategies were identified, reported and discussed in this study. Evaluation on the Effectiveness and Feasibility of Integrating STI/HIV counseling with Existing Family Planning Service in Shanghai

Objective To assess the impact of pamphlet distribution and counseling on STI/HIV/condom knowledge, attitudes towards STI/AIDS patients and condom use intention of married couples in Shanghai and explore the effective way of integrating STI/HIV prevention with family planning services. Methods Four hundred and five married women aged 20~39 and their husbands were recruited from 14 family planning stations at 7 administrative districts of Shanghai. They were randomly divided into two groups, the counseling intervention (CI) group with 199 couples and the pamphlet distribution (PD) group with 206 couples. For the PD group, only pamphlets containing information on STI/AIDS/ condom were distributed and condoms given free of charge, whereas for the CI group, they were provided with not only full counseling on STI/AIDS/condom and free condoms, but also followed by demonstration of correct condom use. The two modes of interventions were conducted following the baseline survey, and the follow up data were collected one month later. Results 1. There was no statistical difference between the two groups on STI/AIDS/condom knowledge level, attitudes towards STI/AIDS patients and condom use intention at the baseline. 2. The follow up findings indicated that: ① A significant enhancement in knowledge level was observed in the CI group, with 20% increase for husbands and 24% for wives. While for the PD group, only slight increase was observed: 2% for husbands and 3% for wives; ② 93% husbands and 76% wives of the CI group changed their discriminatory attitudes towards STI patients, and towards AIDS patients, the percentages were 73% and 78%, respectively; ③ 68% husbands and 64% wives of the CI group expressed their intention for condom use; ④ For the PD group, however, there was no difference in attitudes towards STI/AIDS patients and condom use intention at the baseline and follow up. 3.
