cotransport of graphene oxides/reduced graphene oxides with BPA in both bare and iron oxides coated quartz sand

This study investigated the cotransport behaviors of graphene oxides(GO) and reduced graphene oxides(RGO) with bisphenol A(BPA) in porous media in both NaCl(1 and 10 mmol/L) and CaCl2 solutions(0.5 and 1.5 mmol/L) at pH 6.5. Both bare and iron oxides-coated quartz sand were employed as porous media in present study. We found that under all examined solution conditions, the presence of BPA(100 μg/L) did not have obvious influence on the transport of both GO and RGO(8 mg/L as TOC) in both bare and iron oxides-coated quartz sand. Although the dissolved BPAwas the major form dominating the transport behaviors of total BPA in the presence of GO/RGO, yet the GO/RGO-associated BPA(due to the adsorption of BPA onto GO/RGO surfaces) also had some contribution to the transport of total BPA in the presence of GO/RGO in two types of porous ***, due to the different transport behaviors of GO and RGO under different solution conditions, we found that the presence of GO/RGO decreased the transport of total BPA under all examined solution conditions in two types of porous media with the smallest decrease in 1 mmol/L NaCl solutions and the largest in 1.5 mmol/L CaCl2 solutions. The results of this study clearly indicated that when BPA was co-present with GO/RGO, the transport behaviors of GO/RGO in porous media would have great influences on the fate and transport of BPA in natural environments due to their adsorption onto GO/RGO.

The nanoscale biochar(N-BC)generated during the production and weathering of bulk biochar has caused significant concerns for its cotransport with contaminants spreading the *** this study,the cotransport behaviors of N-BC with Cd^(2+)under variable solution chemistry were investigated for the first time,which can pose environmental contamination risks but have received little *** column experiment results showed that increasing ionic strength(IS)or decreasing pH retarded the transport of N-BC but promoted the transport of Cd^(2+)in their individual *** cotransport scenarios,Cd^(2+)facilitated the deposition of N-BC on the quartz sand with increasing IS or decreasing pH by providing additional sorption sites and led to the ripening of N-BC via cation bridging.N-BC retarded the transport of Cd^(2+)under all ***,lower pH and higher IS could facilitate the release of Cd^(2+)from the immobile *** cotransport modeling results demonstrated that the Cd^(2+)adsorption on and desorption from the immobile N-BC controlled the retention and release of Cd^(2+)under variable pH and IS,while the influence of mobile N-BC on Cd^(2+)transport was *** study provided new insight for evaluating the potential contamination-spreading risks and suggested that rational use of biochar with great caution is necessary.

Effects of graphene oxides on transport and deposition behaviors of bacteria in saturated porous media

The effects of graphene oxides on the transport and deposition behaviors of bacteria(Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Grampositive Bacillus subtilis) in quartz sand were investigated in both NaCl and CaCl_2 solutions at pH 6.5. Both breakthrough curves and retained profiles of bacteria in the absence and presence of GO under all examined solution conditions were obtained. The results demonstrated that for both types of bacteria, the presence of GO increased the transport and decreased the deposition of bacteria at both low(10 mM) and high ionic strengths(50 mM) in NaCl solutions. However, opposite observations were achieved at different ionic strengths in CaCl_2 solutions. Particularly, GO facilitated the transport and inhibited the deposition of bacteria in 1 m M CaCl_2 solutions, while they suppressed the transport of bacteria in 2.5 m M CaCl_2 solutions. Clearly, the cell transport and deposition behaviors in porous media would be greatly influenced by the GO copresent in suspensions. Furthermore, we found that with GO copresent in suspensions, the transport and deposition behaviors of bacteria were highly associated with those of GO. The heteroaggregation of bacteria and GO also contributed to the decreased cell transport in 2.5 mM CaCl_2 solutions. This study showed that GO copresent in suspensions could act as mobile carriers for bacteria transport in porous media, leading to the alteration of cell transport and deposition behaviors.
