containerization of Grain: Emergence of a New Supply Chain Market

The containerized shipment of freight continues to grow rapidly. This development can be traced to a transformation of bulk and break-bulk service to containerization. Demand has been driven by opportunities to broaden logistical options as well as advantageous freight rates. Logisticians and policy makers are unsure how much more bulk traffic can be converted to containerization, but the trends are evident. Of particular interest is grain. Bulk grain handlers have successfully resisted the conversion of grain shipping to containerization, except on the North American-Asian traffic lanes and the Australian-Asian traffic lanes where growth has been significant. This paper reviews the theoretical case for grain containerization from a logistics perspective, followed by an examination of the current trends in the United States and Canada. Subsequently, the analysis considers the restrictions and resistance to the conversion of grain from bulk shipping to containerization.

ControlService: a containerized solution for control-algorithm-as-a-service in cloud control systems

As an extension of networked control systems, cloud control systems(CCSs) have emerged as a new control paradigm to improve the service quality of emerging control missions, such as data-driven modeling and automated vehicles. Existing studies have used the workflow-based restructured method to optimize the computation-intensive algorithms in the CCSs. However, the challenges here are how to define and submit these algorithms' workflows as cloud services and execute these algorithms' workflows in a containerized manner. Based on these challenges, we propose a containerized solution for the control-algorithm-as-a-service(C3aS) in the CCSs, namely Control Service. It offers the control algorithm as a cloud workflow service and uses a customized workflow engine to realize the containerized execution. First, we employ a cloud workflow representation method to define a control algorithm into an abstract cloud workflow form. Afterward, we provide a cloud service representation of the abstract cloud workflow. Next, we design a workflow engine and submit the cloud service to this workflow engine to implement containerized execution of this cloud service in the CCSs. In the experiment, we discuss the cloud service form and containerized implementation of the subspace identification method. Experimental results show that the proposed Control Service has significant performance advantages in computational time, reduction percentage, and speedup ratio compared with the baseline method.

Current applications,consisting of multiple replicas,are packaged into lightweight containers with their execution *** the dominant impact of distribution efficiency of gigantic images on container startup(e.g.,distributed deep learning application),the image“warm-up”technique which prefetches images of these replicas to destination nodes in the cluster is ***,the current image“warm-up”technique solely focuses on identical image distribution,which fails to take effect when distributing different images to destination *** address this problem,this paper proposes Hound,a simple but efficient cluster image distribution system based on *** support diverse image distribution requests of cluster nodes,Hound additionally adopts node-level parallelism(i.e.,downloading images to destination nodes in parallel)to further improve the efficiency of image *** experimental results demonstrate Hound outperforms Docker,kubernetes container runtime interface(CRI-O),and Docker-compose in terms of image distribution performance when cluster nodes request different ***,the high scalability of Hound is evaluated in the scenario of ten nodes.

Expansion Plans for the Port of Durban： What Are the Issues for the City of Durban？

The Port of Durban is one of the largest ports in the Southern Hemisphere and is the main port for the Southern African region. However, the port is reaching its capacity limit and it is apparent that for South Africa＇s economic growth this port needs to expand. In order to expand the port needs to not only expand its waterside infrastructure but it would need to provide new logistics corridors though the city of Durban. The city of Durban has completely surrounded the port making expansion options difficult and intertwined with the planning of the city. This paper examines the various options and timelines for port expansion as well as the issues from the city perspective. Areas of possible conflict in this process revolve around traffic capacity and related road/rail infrastructure, environmental issues, social and economic impacts.

Shipping industry has become more capital intensive, technically more demanding and subject to major global regulatory reforms. As a consequence, the number of African shipping lines has been severely reduced. International trade of the WCA countries remains weak, limited to 30% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the port and shipping convey management in the WCA region, and of course to describe what has been achieved since then and what still have to be done to better its infrastructures and port community.

文章以北京市的农产品流通情况作为背景，从供应链视角分析农产品从产地至目的地的流通形式，并分析农产品流通效率的影响要素，对未来的城市农产品流通提出基于集装化的物流体系。在该物流体系中通过集装器具共享实现统一化的管理，通过城市农产品从产地至销地市场全程集装化的形式实现高效周转，并通过模拟仿真得出单元化作业能够有效提高城市农产品的流通效率，为解决城市大批量农产品的流通问题提供新的思路与借鉴。
