Water shortage is a crucial problem in the northern China,but in the southern part,enormous floods frequently *** water problems seriously disturb human’s life and the sustainable development of economy and society in the ***,China government approved to initiate South to North Water Transfer Project in *** project is to build the east,middle and west routes for annually transporting 44.8 billion m of water from the Yangtze River in the southern to the northern *** east and middle routes are 1154 and 1267 km long,and their constructions have been started since 2004 and *** west route is reevaluated. However,it is ignored the establishment of conservation buffer systems beside the routes to protect the water from severe non-point pollution from agricultural runoff as well as wasted water from urban and industrial areas. Except for the pollution,a changing environment from the water exporting to importing area also changes the water properties of physics and *** protection of the water quailty,and ecological restoration along the routes are critical issues that influence the purpose of the project both directly and *** paper proposes the establishment of conservation buffer systems along the routes for the protection,and discusses the buffer *** systems in each of the routes will also potentialty produce at least 0.61 billion USD of annually ecological alues.
