We read with great interest the recent review of benign epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECTS) and child-hood absence epilepsy (CAE) by Verrotti et al. (1)BECTS and CAE are the most common epilepsy syndromes in childhood and share certain clinical features: similar age at onset, overall good prognosis, and genetic predispo-sition. Several studies have reported the coexistence of the two syndromes, and recently, Verrotti et al. analyzed 19 cases reported to have clinical features of CAE and BECTS. Among the total 19 cases, three cases had fea-tures of both syndromes contemporarily;three cases expe-rienced absence seizures initially followed by BECTS;and the other 13 cases experienced BECTS at onset and had absence seizures later.

We studied consecutive impact loading on woven high-modulus polyethylene rope, which is used in robotics fields. An impact tester was developed to conduct the experiments. Five consecutive impact loads (five drops) were applied to the rope and the stiffness of the loading part that corresponds to each drop was evaluated. The stiffness of the woven ropes was affected strongly by consecutive impact loading. The change in stiffness is undesirable in some applications such as in robotic fields. Therefore, we have proposed a method that can optimize changes in stiffness by applying a preload before impact testing (preload treatment). The experimental results show that preload is an efficient way to reduce changing rope stiffness. We have also proposed an empirical equation that can estimate the rope stiffness after arbitrary preload treatment, and this equation is a function of the number of drops and the static preload level. The equation can be used to determine the preload treatment conditions to stabilize the stiffness of the woven ropes before they are used in engineering fields.

Objective To investigate the safety and efficacy of mechanical anastomosis with Chinese staplers in the surgical treatment of esophageal carcinoma and carcinoma of gastric cardia in order to find out an alternative effective anastomotic technique to hand sewn method. Methods From August 1980 to April 1996, there were totally 1264 cases of esophageal carcinoma and 701 cases of carcinoma of gastric cardia receiving esophagogastric anastomosis with Chinese staplers combined with telescope suturing of seromuscular layers after resection of tumors, with age ranging from 28 years to 81 years and a man to woman ratio of 4∶1 (1572/393). The anastomosis was performed at the cervical region in 44 patients, and intrathoracically in 1921. Our technical essential points also included fixation of the gastric substitute to the thoracic apex or mediastinum with 3-4 stitches to relieve the anastomotic tension. Results Compared with the reported postoperative leakage rate from 2%-4% in China and 4.2%-12.3% abroad, our techniques reduced the total leakage rate to 0.8%, that is, cervical leakage rate was 11.4% (5/44), and intrathoracic leakage rate 0.57% (11/1921). The intrathoracic leakage rate was 0.99% (8/808) for the first 8 years, and 0.27% for the following 8 years. There was no leakage (0/350) in the last 3 years. The anastomotic stricture occurred in 98 patients (4.99%) which could be relieved by Bougie or balloon dilatation. The total operative mortality was reduced to 0.76%. Conclusions Mechanical anastomosis with Chinese staplers combined with telescope suturing should be an effective method to prevent the occurrence of anastomotic leakage after esophageal resections.

Various abnormal phenomena have been observed during PCR so far. The present study performed a series of consecutive PCRs (including many rounds of re-amplification continuously) and found that the abortion of re-amplification was inevitable as long as a variety of complicated product appeared. The aborting stages varied, according to the lengths of targets. Longer targets reached the abortion earlier than the shorter ones, marked by appearance of the complex that was immobile in electropho-resis. Denatured gel-electrophoresis revealed that the complex was mainly made up of shorter or partially synthesized strands, together with small amounts of full-length ones. Able to be digested by S1 nuclease but unable by restriction endonucleases (REs), the complex was proved to consist of both single regions and double-helix regions that kept the complex stable thermodynamically. Simulations gave evidence that partial strands, even at lower concentration, could disturb re-amplification effec- tively and lead to the abortion of re-amplifications finally. It was pointed out that the partial strands formed chiefly via polymerase’s infidelity, and hence the solution to lighten the abnormality was also proposed.

Purpose: consecutive exotropia is a frequent consequence of surgery for convergent strabismus that may develop at differing rates postoperatively. Several surgical options on horizontal recti have been proposed, but none report a clearly standardized amount of surgery. The present study provides further results of the medial rectus muscle advancement. Methods: Twenty-eight patients, age range 6 - 55 years, who had undergone unilateral or bilateral medial rectus advancement to the physiological insertion, with or without contemporary unilateral lateral rectus muscle recession, were included in the study. Factors leading to the onset of consecutive exotropia were analyzed. Results: After 2 - 3 years, the overall mean angle reduction was 21.3 prismatic diopters (PD) for distance and 22.8 PD for near, with an effectiveness on near vision lower than expected. Only in the 7 cases with a preoperatively larger exotropia at near (of at least 10 PD), the reduction was 17.0 PD for distance and 24.6 PD for near. In unilateral medial rectus muscle advancement, the mean reduction was 14.3 PD for distance and 16.3 PD for near;in bilateral advancement it was 25.8 PD and 25.2 PD respectively. Conclusion: Medial rectus advancement is preferable to other options, especially in cases with convergence deficit, if no excess of divergence or limitation of bulb rotation is present, for which a lateral rectus muscle recession is indicated. Unilateral and bilateral surgeries are useful for exotropia of about 15 PD and 25 PD respectively. The effectiveness depends weakly or not at all by the amount of the previously executed recession.

This research paper evaluated and investigated the effectiveness of the comprehensible technique (CT) introduced by the researcher as an alternative solution to Algebra’s linear equations in solving consecutive number problems. The CT is a proposed easy and efficient way of solving number problems which aimed to help the learners reduce their difficulties in using variables since the technique only uses basic arithmetic and mental Mathematics. Evaluation research was utilized in this study where 20 people, from various ages and professions, were chosen purposively as respondents of the study. The study found out that CT was very effective for the respondents especially in unlocking difficulties in solving consecutive number problems. Moreover, according to them, the CT is easy to use, it is engaging and enjoyable, direct and simple and can be utilized as shortcut way of solving consecutive number problems when competing in Math quiz bees or taking board examinations where time is of the essence.

Relationship Between Working Memory and English-Chinese consecutive Interpreting

Working memory is the system that actively holds multiple pieces of transitory information in the mind, where they can be manipulated. In interpreting, working memory is in charge of the storage and processing of immediate information, thus making an important factor in influencing interpreting quality. The role played by working memory capacity in interpreting remains to be a hotspot issue in the field of interpreting *** thesis aims to investigate the relationship between working memory capacity and E-C consecutive interpreting by conducting two tests. The first test is working memory span test and the second one is E-C consecutive interpreting test. By comparing and analyzing the results of two tests, this thesis comes to the conclusion that working memory capacity is positively correlated with E-C consecutive interpreting in terms of fluency and logic.
