The path,value and limits of the confucius institute in carrying out public diplomacy

On the basis of Chinese language teaching and cultural communication activities,the confucius institute carries out a variety of cultural exchange activities between China and the host country,which has become an effective way for China to carry out public diplomacy and participate in global cultural *** analysing the concepts of public diplomacy,cultural diplomacy,people-to-people exchange and cultural governance,this paper summarises three typical paths of confucius institutes in carrying out public diplomacy:‘from the government to foreign nationals’,‘from the government to Chinese citizens and then to foreign nationals’,and‘from the government to foreign nationals and then to foreign nationals’.The value of the confucius institute in carrying out public diplomacy is reflected on the level of national diplomacy,international exchange and global ***,the capability of the confucius institute as a language and cultural communication institution initiated by China and in cooperation with other countries in carrying out public diplomacy is *** limitation,on one hand,originates from the nature of the confucius institute as a language and cultural communication organisation,and on the other hand,is related to the difficulties and challenges that China faces in its participation in global *** diplomacy and cultural diplomacy are based on national *** also transcend national interests and,furthermore,become a way for a country to actively participate in global cultural *** experience of and challenges faced by the confucius institute can have important implications for China in participating in global cultural governance.

This paper will present the role confucius institute,a Chinese cultural institution,plays in the relationship between Romania and *** will analyze the activities in which the four confucius institutes in Romania engage,in order to reveal if they bring any improvements to the development of the relationship between the two *** central question revolves,thus,around culture's role in strengthening the friendship between Romania and *** paper applies the theory of cultural diplomacy in explaining the main tasks of confucius institute project established by China with the intention of gathering more friends *** represents a gateway to the rest of Europe,and is,therefore,considered to be an essential factor in the relationship of China with other European ***,the paper intends to discover whether the confucius institute,through its numerous language courses and cultural activities,is able of maintaining and even improving the relationship between Romania and China,and,thus,ensuring China of having a stable,helpful and devoted ***,the paper will not only take into consideration confucius institute's achievements within Romanian borders but also its challenges,so as to confer the reader a more vivid portrait of its *** order to make a much thorough exploration,one particular confucius institute,located in the city of Cluj-Napoca,had undergone a more in-depth *** accordance with this line of thought,it is to be mentioned that a survey,as well as a series of interviews,were conducted on students and teachers of the specific *** process will unveil the positive results achieved by the institution,as well as its *** the other hand,the students and teachers altogether have put forward a set of suggestions for the further development of the confucius institute in Romania,which are worthy to be taken into *** sharing a similar past,harboring the same ideals and fighting

An Analysis on Students’Chinese Learning Needs of confucius institute at Hasanuddin University,Indonesia

Hasanuddin University in Indonesia through a questionnaire,the key point is to understand the learning needs of students and to make suggestions for optimizing the curriculum and teaching methods of Chinese *** to the limited time and conditions,there are some deficiencies in this *** there are many factors affecting the learning needs,the questionnaire may not cover the whole content,it can only reflect the learning needs of learners,and cannot be used as an accurate *** study focused on comprehensive learning needs,so it was not compare the learning needs of students from the two teaching sites,nor was it compare the learning needs of male and female learners,these questions also require precise analysis by subsequent *** addition,although the optimization of the proposal has a certain practicality,but still need to practice and improve.

A novel dataset is presented that reveals a general pattern of declining favourability in news stories about confucius institutes(CIs)from 2006 through 2015 in six English-speaking countries:the US,the UK,Canada,Australia,India and *** are sig-nificant differences in mean favourability and time trends across countries,*** trends in favourability are observed in the US and Canada,in particular,whereas Kenya and India’s time trends are nil or possibly *** report empir-ical models of favourability conditional on GDP per capita,trade with China and the number of CIs across country-year *** with Pew polling data,our data reveal an inter-esting pair of conflicting income ***-income countries tend to be more negative and less positive on CIs than low-income countries ***-country positive shocks to real GDP per capita,however,are positively associated with favourabil-ity after cross-country differences in income levels are absorbed by country fixed *** number of CIs in a country has mixed effects on the favourability of news coverage about CIs across country-year *** billions of dollars spent on public diplomacy by the Chinese government,our findings suggest that its return on investment in public diplomacy in the form of CIs may not be as expected.

Interculturality,Identity,and Power:Experiences of Volunteer Chinese Teachers at Overseas confucius institutes

With the rapid expansion of confucius institutes globally,the Hanban launched a Volunteer Chinese Teachers(VCT)Program with the purpose of selecting a large number of college graduates and graduate students from Chinese universities to fill vacancies for overseas Chinese *** spite of the multitude of students participating in the program,there has been a paucity of research attention on *** do these students,most of whom have never been abroad before,manage their life in their host country and negotiate their new role as a VCT in an overseas confucius institute?What are their intercultural experiences as they venture into a new country to serve as a native teacher of Chinese?Based on in-depth interviews with a dozen VCTs teaching in linguistically and culturally different contexts,this study seeks to examine the dynamics of interculturality,identity and power relations involved in their overseas language teaching.

Are confucius institutes Building Blocks or Stumbling Blocks for Foreign Students in China: An Empirical Study of 190 Countries (1999–2015)

Purpose:This study investigates the impact of confucius institutes on China’s international education ***,it examines whether the establishment of confucius institutes has a gravitational effect on the scale of foreign students coming to ***,it discerns whether there are any association between the establishment of confucius institutes and the attributes of foreign students based on the type of program they ***,it identifies whether there are any differences in the impact of confucius institutes based on constraints such as the number of foreign students,income levels,cultural distance,and geographical ***/Approach/Methods:Based on the trade gravity model and the push–pull theory,we estimated a two-way fixed-effects model using panel data of all source countries from 1999 to ***:Results show that confucius institutes have helped China attract more foreign students on Chinese government scholarships,with each institute increasing such enrolment by 1.3%.However,confucius institutes have resulted in a drop in the total number of foreign students studying in China,especially nondegree *** substitution effect means that the institutes actually help China improve the composition of its foreign *** heterogeneity analysis shows that the substitution effect is primarily driven by the main source ***,this study suggests that China should establish more confucius institutes in Africa and Eastern Europe to maximize the catalyzing effect of confucius ***/Value:In contrast to previous studies on foreign scholarship in China,this study examines all 190 source countries from 1999 to *** comprehensive study also explores the heterogeneous effects of foreign students on trade across economic,cultural,and geographical domains.

Cultural Diplomacy and Internationalization of Higher Education:The Experience of Three confucius institutes in Canada

This paper is based on a study of three confucius institutes in *** research aims to explore the nature of operations at confucius institutes,ranging from the selection of partnering Chinese universities,to the program planning at each individual ***,it focuses on the perceived impacts of the confucius institute partnership on the Canadian hosting *** was collected through interviews with key administrative staff from three Canadian *** theoretical framework of constructivism from international relations theory and concepts drawn from the literature on the internationalization of higher education were used to analyze the *** issues revealed from the data include the host’s perception of confucius institutes as China’s cultural diplomacy and soft power strategy,the progression of partnerships between Canada and China over time,and university autonomy.

在跨文化传播的实践过程中，通过调适文化身份以促进其他文化群体成员适应、理解中国文化有何困境，又何以可能？研究通过引入身份传播理论创新文化身份研究的路径，对全球14所孔子学院的中方人员以及不同国家的“文化接触者”进行访谈和实践考察。研究发现，以“节日文化”为代表的“文化居间”是跨文化传播研究亟需关注的界域，文化接触者在接触中国节日文化后的身份安全性感知受到身份差距、对话有效性、双文化身份背景等因素影响。进一步看，文化身份理解的困境主要归因于观念边界造就的身份差距，节日文化则通过形构意义共同体和开放对话的方式将身份传播理论框架中的四重身份联结起来，以设置微观叙事、制造文化体验、推动双向融合的方式实现赋魅，推动文化接触者个体文化身份的“唤醒—整合—归属”。
