＜正＞ Shirvan Dam is a double-curvature concrete arch dam located in north-east of Iran, with a height of 83 m above the foundation and a crest length of 325 m. Construction phase of the dam body started in 1998 and completed in 2001. During this period 230 000 m3 concrete have been placed in the dam body and appurtenant works. concrete aggregates in this project are derived from local limestone quarry near right abutment. At the time of making trial concrete mixes, the design engineer found that the processed fine aggregate grading could not satisfy the specification requirements and harsh trial mass concrete mixtures resulted due to lack of fine particles smaller than 1.5 mm in manufactured sand. After considering project restrictions, use of limestone powder as filler selected. Mass concrete mix design for Shirvan dam body optimized during construction phase to decrease cement content and relative heat generation. Extensive trial works and statistical analysis of quality control test results show that quantity of cement and grading of aggregates can be changed without affecting strength during construction phase, if sources of ingredients and quality of the cement paste, including water cement ratio remain the same.
