Harmonizing Melody with Meta-Structure of Piano Accompaniment Figure

In this paper, a meta-structure of piano accompaniment figure （meta-structure for short） is proposed to harmonize a melodic piece of music so as to construct a multi-voice music. Here we approach melody harmonization with piano accompaniment as a machine learning task in a probabilistic framework. A series of piano accompaniment figures are collected from the massive existing sample scores and converted into a set of meta-structure. After the procedure of samples training, a model is formulated to generate a proper piano accompaniment figure for a harmonizing unit in the context. This model is flexible in harmonizing a melody with piano accompaniment. The experimental results are evaluated and discussed.

Quaternion based joint DOA and polarization parameters estimation with stretched three-component electromagnetic vector sensor array

The three-component electromagnetic vector sensor (EMVS) consisting of co-centered orthogonally oriented x-dipole, z-dipole and z-loop is considered. In order to make full use of the spatial aperture of each component, the original uniform linear three-component EMVS array (ULTEA) is stretched into one half-wavelength spaced uniform linear loop subarray (ULLSA) along the z axis, and one sparse uniform linear co-centered orthogonally oriented dual-dipole (CODD) subarray (SULCSA) along the x axis. Then, a generalized rotation invariance based quaternion multiple signal classification (GRIQ-music) algorithm is presented for direction of arrival (DOA) and polarization parameters estimation. According to the proposed algorithm, the elevation angles are firstly estimated based on the half-wavelength spaced ULLSA. Then the polarization phase differences and azimuth angles are obtained based on the coupling relationship between the angle domain and polarization domain, but the azimuth angles are in coarse-resolution since the array aperture is not utilized. Next, the SULCSA is used to re-estimate the azimuth angles in fine-resolution, and the ambiguity problem can be resolved by the least square method. Finally, based on the estimated elevation angles, azimuth angles and polarization phase differences, the corresponding auxiliary polarization angles can be estimated by N times one-dimensional parameter search, where N is the sources number, and the parameters are matched automatically. Based on the GRIQ-music algorithm, the high dimensional parameters search problem of the conventional Q-music algorithm is simplified to a one-dimensional parameter search problem, thus the proposed algorithm not only reduces the computation complexity considerably, but also avoids the performance degradation caused by the failure in parameters pairing. On Building Practical Biocomputers for Real-world Applications： Receptacles for Culturing Slime Mould Memristors and Component Standardisation

Our application of bionic engineering is novel： we are interested in developing hybrid hardware-wetware systems for music. This paper introduces receptacles for culturing Physarum polycephalum-based memristors that are highly accessible to the creative practitioner. The myxomycete Physarum polycephalum is an amorphous unicellular organism that has been found to exhibit memristive properties. Such a discovery has potential to allow us to move towards engineering electrical systems that encompass Physarum polycephalum components. To realise this potential, it is necessary to address some of the constraints associated with harnessing living biological entities in systems for real-time application. Within the paper, we present 3D printed receptacles designed to standardise both the production of components and memristive observations. Subsequent testing showed a significant decrease in growth time, increased lifespan, and superior similarity in component-to-component responses. The results indicate that our receptacle design may provide means of implementing hybrid electrical systems for music technology.

Auto-Harmonizing Chinese Folk Song with Piano Accompaniment

This paper approaches melody harmonization with piano accompaniment as a machine learning task,in a probabilistic framework. An existing sample score set of Chinese folk song with piano accompaniment is used to build a model of piano accompaniment process. The model can then be used to harmonize new melody with piano accompaniment.
