The relationship between anxiety about prostate cancer among patients with biochemical cancer recurrence and the use of complementary and alternative medicines,diet,and exercise

Objective:We aimed to explore associations between anxiety and specific health behaviors such as complementary and alternative medicine(CAM),diet,and exercise among prostate cancer ***:PCa patients enrolled in a prospective cohort study of men with biochemical cancer recurrence were surveyed about use of CAM,diet,and *** was measured with the Memorial Anxiety Scale for Prostate Cancer(MAX-PC)and the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression ***:Nearly 70%(44 of 67)of the original cohort of patients completed the supplementary CAM *** mean age was 68 *** percent of respondents reported engaging in a rel-evant health behavior,and 64%reported doing so in direct response to their PCa ***,the most prevalent specific behaviors were exercising(56%),making dietary changes(50%),taking calcium supplements(41%),and taking vitamin D supplements(39%).Elevated baseline PCa-specific anxiety(MAX-PC score>16)after biochemical cancer recurrence was associated with use of any CAM(P=0.01),use of herbs/supplements(P=0.01),and dietary changes(P=0.04).Conclusion:PCa patients commonly use CAM,dietary changes,and exercise in response to their diagnosis,and these changes are associated with elevated general and PCa-specific anxiety.

Objective:To analyze the intellectual landscape and emerging research trends of Chinese medicine(CM)in the management of pediatric asthma through a scientometric ***:Publications related to CM in the management of pediatric asthma were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection using relevant keywords.A scientometric study was performed using CiteSpace and ***:A total of 1,673 original articles and reviews from 1991 to 2019 were included in the *** amount of annual publications had a gradual increase with *** was the major contributor both in country and institution *** on the co-citation,the published journals were grouped into 4 *** analysis indicated that the main hotspots were:(1)comprehensive management;(2)risk factors,mechanism,and prevalence;(3)prevention and treatment;(4)inflammation;and(5)environmental ***,we predicted that three emerging trends were quality of life promotion,immune response,and combination ***:CM research in the management of pediatric asthma will maintain the current trend of steady *** scientometric analysis may help scientists to identify the areas of interests and future directions in the field.

Poland has a unique history of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)dating back to the 17th century when Polish missionary Michael(Michal)Boym was a pioneer in the *** the 20th century,his successor,Professor Zbigniew Garnuszewski,reintroduced acupuncture to medical practice in ***,other methods of TCM and its holistic approach to patient care have not found their place in modern medicine in *** present,the legal status of TCM in Poland remains unregulated,with TCM included in the broad spectrum of complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)*** reports are available on the use of TCM methods among the Polish *** medicine combines conventional medicine with evidence-based CAM interventions and considers all aspects of a patient's health,including physical,emotional,mental,social,and environmental *** integrative healthcare model that incorporates TCM modalities and lifestyle recommendations as well as a whole person approach may provide a more sustainable solution for the constantly underfinanced Polish healthcare system,which faces challenges of multimorbidity in an aging society and limited access to *** coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic,war in Ukraine,and ongoing climate crisis have underscored the need to strengthen the resilience of the Polish healthcare system and search for new solutions.A model of care that blends the best of biomedicine and TCM healing approaches may be a better option for both patients and the healthcare system in Poland.

In recent years,the pharmacological benefits of herbal extracts have been revisited for their potential neuroprotective effects in *** polysaccharides extracted from the fruits of Lycium barbarum L.,or Lycium barbarum polysaccharides,exert their anti-aging effect through reducing oxidative stress,modulating the immune response,enhancing neuronal responses,and promoting *** therapeutic efficacy of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in preserving retinal ganglion cells and their functions was demonstrated in a range of experimental models of optic *** include the acute and chronic ocular hypertension models,the partial optic nerve transection model,and the ischemic-reperfusion injuries *** on these findings,Lycium barbarum polysaccharides appear to be a good candidate to be developed as a neuroprotective agent for treating multifactorial *** review aims to present a comprehensive review on the latest preclinical evidence on the pre-and post-treatment benefits of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in retinal ganglion cell *** possible mechanisms of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides mediating retinal ganglion cell neuroprotection will also be ***,the potential research gaps in the effective translation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides treatment into clinical glaucoma management will be discussed.

Objective:Appraisal of treatment outcomes in integrative medicine is a challenge due to a gap between the concepts of Western medicine(WM)disease and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)*** study presents an approach for the appraisal of integrative medicine that is based on targeted *** use non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with spleen deficiency syndrome as a test ***:A patient-reported outcome(PRO)scale was developed based on literature review,Delphi consensus survey,and reliability and validity test,to quantitatively evaluate spleen deficiency ***,a metabonomic foundation for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with spleen deficiency syndrome was identified via a longitudinal interventional trial and targeted ***,an integrated appraisal model was established by identifying metabolites that responded in the treatment of WM disease and TCM syndrome as positive outcomes and using other aspects of the metabonomic foundation as independent ***:Ten symptoms and signs were included in the spleen deficiency PRO *** internal reliability,content validity,discriminative validity and structural validity of the scale were all *** on treatment responses to treatments for WM disease(homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance)or TCM syndrome(spleen deficiency PRO scale score)from a previous randomized controlled trial,two cohorts comprised of 30 participants each were established for targeted metabolomics ***-five metabolites were found to be involved in successful treatment outcomes to both WM and TCM,following quantitative comparison and multivariate ***,the model of the integrated appraisal system was exploratively established using binary logistic regression;it included 9 core metabolites and had the prediction probability of 83.3%.Conclusion:This study presented a new and comprehensive research route for integrative appraisal of treatment

Impact of socioeconomic and health-related factors on consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in Spain in 2006, 2011 and 2017

Objective: complementary and alternative medicine use and type of use may be influenced by sociodemographic and economic determinants through which we could identify characteristics of patients with greater trend to use it. This paper aims to describe the changes in the consumption of homeopathic and natural remedies in Spain for three time points in order to discern changes in rate of consumption, associated factors and whether their use has been affected by a period of economic ***: This study utilized 2006, 2011 and 2017 cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey, a nationally representative survey of the population aged more than 15 years old and resident in Spain. Independent bivariate and multivariate descriptive analyses for each of the 3 years studied were ***: The rate of consumption of both homeopathic and natural remedies has decreased over the periods studied. In spite of this decrease, the consumer profile appears to remain stable over the three periods. The sociodemographic factors associated with their consumption were being female, being 30–64 years old, being separated/divorced, having higher education qualifications, being employed and belonging to a higher social class. Psychiatric morbidity, chronic health problems such as pain, mental health problems or malignant tumors, and absence of major cardiovascular events were the clinical factors ***: It can be concluded that beyond the economic situation, the use of homeopathic and natural remedies obeys to the needs of the patients related to their state of health and the response they receive from the health system. It may be that women have different needs and expectations of the healthcare system and, given this breach of expectations, seek remedy to alleviate their needs outside the system and conventional medicine.

Classical Chinese Herbal Formulas in the Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease: A Narrative Review

Objective:To summarize the current evidence for 8 frequently prescribed Chinese herbal formulas(CHF)as treatments for angina pectoris in patients with coronary heart disease(CHD)and the associated adverse ***:Seven electronic databases were screened from their inception through July 2018 for all evidence related to classical CHF for the treatment of patients with ***:CHF improves CHD outcomes in terms of angina pectoris,electrocardiogram results,Chinese medicine syndromes and biomarkers *** combination of CHF and Western medicine(WM)is more effective on CHD than WM *** use of CHF to treat CHD shows the same or better clinical effects as the use of WM *** 8 investigated CHF do not induce hepatic and renal toxicity or other serious adverse ***:The safety and efficacy of 8 frequently prescribed herbal formulas for treating CHD have been confirmed in many *** findings of these studies are positive but should be interpreted cautiously due to the poor methodological quality of the randomized controlled trials(RCTs)and *** high-quality,multi-center,large-sample RCTs should be performed to confirm these results.

The Model of Western Integrative medicine:The Role of Chinese medicine

The basic concept of integrative medicine（IM） is that by combining mainstream（biomedicine） with complementary and alternative medicine（CAM）, synergistic therapeutic effects can be *** the methods of mind/body medicine（MBM） are added to this combination,as in Western countries,a new concept emerges that drastically changes the approach toward illness. It is interesting to note that the joining of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine in the early days of the Peoples＇ Republic of China preceded the Western model of IM by almost 50 *** elements that make up the key components of IM as practiced today in the West were already present in the Chinese version of IM,and Chinese medicine has played and continues to play an important role in advancing ***,one of the major differences between the Chinese and the Western models of IM today,besides MBM and some other treatment options,is that Western integrative medicine（WIM） strictly requires its CAM methods to be supported by scientific evidence. The therapeutic methods of IM and their applications are many and ***,they are most frequently employed to treat chronic medical conditions,e.g.,bronchial asthma,rheumatic disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disorder and chronic *** fields in which IM may be applied are internal medicine（inflammatory bowel diseases and cardiovascular diseases）,musculoskeletal disorders,oncology （chemotherapy-induced side effects）,obstetrics and gynecology（dysmenorrhea,endometriosis,infertility and menopausal complaints）,pediatrics,geriatrics,neurology（migraine and chronic headache）,and psychiatry （anxiety and depression）. The concept of WIM is discussed here in detail by reviewing its scope and implications for the practice of medicine and focusing on the role of Chinese medicine in WIM.
