Waveform Design for cognitive radar with Deterministic Extended Targets in the Presence of Clutter

Adjusting radar transmitted waveform to its environment is one of the most important roles in cognitive radar;having the capability of updating transmitted waveforms in different applications is a key point. It has been shown in many studies that if the waveform is designed according to the target and clutter characteristics, the detection performance will improve significantly. The uncertainty of the target radar signatures decreases via maximizing MI and the probability of extended target detection is increases via maximizing SNR. In this paper, a waveform design approach based on maximizing both SNR and MI and with regard to target and clutter shape is presented. The detection performance for proposed waveform is compared with previous proposed waveforms. The present paper compares different scenarios of target and clutter and using the probability of detection as a cost function to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of each waveform in different scenarios which are mainly discussed in this text. The desired waveform for cognitive radar is selected based on simultaneously making compromises between SNR and MI, which plays an important role in cognitive radar systems and based on the assumption addressed in the text, the best waveform transmitted into the environment.

Frequency diverse array(FDA) radar with uniform inter-element frequency offset generates a beam pattern with maxima at multiple range and angle values. Multiple maxima property allows interferers located at any of the maxima to affect the target-returns. As a result the signal to interference noise ratio(SINR) and probability of detection decreases. In this paper, we propose a cognitive uniformly-spaced FDA with non-uniform but symmetric frequency offsets to achieve a single maximum beam pattern at the target position. Moreover,these non-uniform frequency offsets are calculated using well known mu-law formulae. The design sharpens or broadens the transmitted beam pattern based on the receiver feedback to achieve a better detection probability and an improved SINR as compared to the previous designs. The performance is also analyzed by considering the Cramer-Rao lower bound(CRLB) on target angle and range estimation.

To suppress narrowband interferences,sparse frequency waveform can be transmitted by wideband radar systems. It suffers the high range sidelobes. A new algorithm for sparse frequency waveform design with range sidelobes constraint is proposed. The approach affords much better frequency stopband suppression by flexibly controlling sidelobes constraint using Weighted integrated sidelobe level(WISL) metric. The approach is computationally efficient and can suit the more general Peakto-average power ratio(PAR) constraint. An extension to Multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) radar case is also presented.

The joint optimization of detection threshold and waveform parameters for target tracking which comes from the idea of cognitive radar is investigated for the modified probabilistic data association(MPDA)*** transmitted waveforms and detection threshold are adaptively selected to enhance the tracking *** modified Riccati equation is adopted to predict the error covariance which is used as the criterion function,while the optimization problem is solved through the genetic algorithm(GA).The detection probability,false alarm probability and measurement noise covariance are all considered together,which significantly improves the tracking performance of the joint detection and tracking *** results show that the proposed adaptive waveform-detection threshold joint optimization method outperforms the adaptive threshold method and the fixed parameters method,which will reduce the tracking *** average reduction of range error between the adaptive joint method and the fixed parameters method is about 0.6 m,while that between the adaptive joint method and the adaptive threshold only method is about 0.3 *** error reduction occurs for the velocity error and acceleration error.

Extended target detection performance can be enhanced by using phase-modulated waveform designs in band-limited radar systems. Unlike waveforms designed for the total energy constraint, phase-modulated waveforms can fully exploit the transmit power in the pulse duration, which is more suit- able for practical radar systems. An alternating iterative algorithm was developed to optimize the phase-modulated baseband waveform by maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio （SNR） at the receiver filter output. The output SNR increases continuously with the number of iterations and the algorithm is guaran- teed to converge. Simulations validate the effectiveness of this approach. The waveforms designed by this method outperform other commonly used waveforms for extended target detection.
