Applicability and improvement of different potential evapotranspiration models in different climate zones of China

Background Accurate estimation of potential evapotranspiration(PET) is the key for studying land-air interaction hydrological processes. Several models are used to estimate the PET based on standardized meteorological data. Although combination-based models have the highest level performance estimation of PET, they require more meteorological data and may therefore be difficult to apply in areas lacking meteorological observation *** The results showed significant differences in the spatial trends of PET calculated by different models in China, the Doorenbots–Pruitts model revealed the highest PET(1902.6 mm), and the Kuzmin model revealed the lowest PET(349.6 mm), with the largest difference being 5.5 times. The Romanenko and the Rohwer models were the recommended temperature-based and aerodynamic-based models. On the other hand, the Abtew model was more suitable for arid and semi-arid regions, while the Priestley–Taylor model was more suitable for humid regions. Combination-based models revealed ideal calculation accuracies, among which the Penman–Monteith model was the best option for PET *** The accuracy range of Romanenko, Rohwer, Abten, Priestley Taylor, and Penman Monteith models improved in MPZ and TCZ is higher than that improved in TMZ and SMZ. This does not mean that the improved models have higher accuracy in MPZ and TCZ than in TMZ and SMZ. On the contrary, the original model performed poorly in MPZ and TCZ, so the improved accuracy was relatively large. The unimproved model was already more suitable in TMZ and SMZ, so the improved accuracy was relatively small. Therefore, regional calibration of the PET models can improve the accuracy and applicability of PET calculation, providing a reference for studying hydrological processes in different climatic zones.

Trade-Offs and Synergie Effects of Regulating Ecosystem Services along an climatic Gradient in Slovakia

This study aims to assess the synergies and trade-offs of regulating ecosystem services. Ecosystem services are non-linearly interconnected and changes in one service can positively or negatively affect another. We evaluated ecosystem services based on biophysical indicators using an expert scoring system that determines the corresponding soil functions and is part of the existing databases available in Slovakia. This methodological combination enabled us to provide unique mapping and assessment of ecosystem services within Slovakia. Correlation analysis between individual regulating ecosystem services and climate regions, slope, texture, and altitude confirm the statistically significant influence of climate and slope in all agricultural land, arable land, and grassland ecosystems. Statistically significant synergistic effects were established between the regulation of the water regime and the regulation of soil erosion within each climate region, apart from the very warm climate region. Only in a very warm climate region was potential of regulating ecosystem services mutually beneficial for soil erosion control and soil cleaning potential (immobilization of inorganic pollutants).

Early Cretaceous Paleoclimate Characteristics of China:Clues from Continental Climate-indicative Sediments

The Cretaceous was one of the most remarkable ＇greenhouse＇ climate periods in geological history. Most of the reported studies of the Cretaceous paleoclimate are based upon marine sedimentary records. Large spatial scale paleoclimatic reconstruction, which has a higher time resolution based upon continental sediments in China, is rarely found. This study presents paleoclimate reconstruction for the six time periods of the Early Cretaceous in China by employing continental climate-indicative sediments, including calcareous deposits, coal, oil shale, gypsum, halite, desert sedimentary systems, ferruginous deposits and laterite, copper-bearing deposits, limestone and dolomite. Based on the distribution of the association of climate-indicative sediments and the influences of paleotopography and orogenic belts （or important structural belts） on climate, seven climatic zones have been identified： 1） a warm and humid zone; 2） a warm and humid-warm and arid zone; 3） a warm and arid zone; 4） an arid and hot zone; 5） the Tibet hot and humid zone; 6） a hot and arid-semiarid zone; and 7） a hot and humid-hot and arid one. It is found that the Early Cretaceous climatic zones of China were nearly latitudinally distributed from northwest to southeast. The arid- hot climatic zone expanded in the Aptian, suggesting that a hotter and drier climate prevailed in later period of the Early Cretaceous. Conversely, the humid climatic zone expanded in the Albian, indicating that a wetter climate appeared at the end of the Early Cretaceous. The overall distribution pattern of the seven climatic zones indicates that a hot-warm and arid climate was predominant in China; this coincides with a global ＇greenhouse climate＇ background. However, palaeogeographic features and specific geologic events, such as the existence and disappearance of the eastern high plateau, and the uplift and denudation of Yinshan, Yanshan, Tianshan, Qinling and Dabie Mountains, led to distinctive regional climatic feature

Aims Belowground to aboveground biomass(BGB/AGB)ratio is a highly valued parameter of the terrestrial carbon cycle and ***,it remains far from clear whether plant biomass partition-ing to aboveground and belowground is isometric(equal partition-ing)or allometric(unequal partitioning)at community levels and what factors are necessary in order to regulate the *** study aimed to comprehensively find out the patterns of biomass partitioning and their regulatory factors across forests in *** The data of AGB and BGB were compiled from 1542 samples for communities across forests in *** major axis regression was conducted to examine whether AGB and BGB were allocated isometrically or allometrically at a community *** analysis was used to analyze the relationships of BGB/AGB ratio with climatic factors and soil *** Findings We found that the slopes of the relationship between logAGB and logBGB were not always comparable to 1.0(isometric allocation)at community levels,including primary forest,secondary forest,and planted ***,samples in clay,loam,and sand soil types also presented the same ***,the radically different allocations of AGB and BGB were found in northern and southern *** factors totally explained 3.86%of the variations in the BGB/AGB ratio at the community level,which include the mean annual precipitation,mean annual temperature,potential water deficit index,soil car-bon content,soil nitrogen content,soil clay,soil loam,soil sand,soil pH,and soil bulk *** addition,the environmental fac-tors also have effects on the BGB/AGB ratio in other *** patterns revealed in this study are helpful for better under-standing biomass partitioning and spreading the carbon circle models.

Ecosystem Services in Differently Used Agroecosystems along a climatic Gradient in Slovakia

For analysis and evaluation of potential of agroecosystem (arable land and grassland) services (provisioning, regulating and cultural) in Slovakia we have created a mapping unit combining these input layers: slope topography, soil texture and landuse in four climatic regions. Evaluated potential of agroecosystem services was categorised into five categories (very low, low, medium, high and very high). Our results show that climate has the most significant impact on agroecosystem services. Warm, dry lowland region has a higher potential of provisioning services, regulation of water regime, filtration of pollutants and control of soil erosion in comparison to moderately warm and cold regions. In moderate cold region, more than 90% of the total area of arable land has low potential of water regime regulation and cleaning potential (immobilization of risk elements). In the moderate warm climatic region, there is a high share of categories of low and moderate potential of provisioning services and low and moderate potential of water regime regulation. Majority of the total area of warm climatic region belongs to the categories of moderate to high potential of provisioning services and high potential of regulation of water regime. In this climatic zone low potential categories of risk elements immobilization are present in more than 65% of the arable land total area. On the other hand, in very warm climatic zone, more than 89% of the total area of arable land belongs to the category with a very high cleaning (buffering) potential. Potential of natural conditions for recreation is higher only in moderate cold and moderate warm climatic zones with a higher proportion of area of grassland agroecosystems and protected areas NATURA 2000. Moreover, the methodology developed in this paper is replicable and could be applied by planners in the case that they are proficient in geographical information systems.
