Spatial analysis of vegetation cover response to climate trends in Khakassia(South Siberia)

An analysis of the changes in vegetation cover on the territory of the Republic of Khakassia in 2000–2021 due to climatic trends was carried out based on the MODIS *** changes in vegetation cover were estimated based on trends in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)and Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI).In general,in the 21st century,an increase in the biomass of vegetation cover is *** trends were observed in 16%–22%of the territory,and negative only in 1%–3%.For about 20%of the analyzed territory,a significant influence of climate on the changes in vegetation cover was *** most pronounced negative impact on vegetation cover was caused by summer air and soil temperatures,spring temperature,and summer winds,and the positive impact was caused by summer precipitation and soil *** response of the vegetation cover to climate was non-uniform concerning the ***,a significant correlation with the amount of precipitation was observed for~20%–35%of vegetation growing below 600 m above sea level and for less than 5%above this *** negative effect of summer temperatures on plants prevailed mainly at an elevation below~1400 m above sea *** climate change is likely to lead to significant degradation of vegetation in the steppe and foreststeppe in Khakassia in the coming decades.

Diverse effects of crop distribution and climate change on crop production in the agro-pastoral transitional zone of China

Both crop distribution and climate change are important drivers for crop production and can affect food security, which is an important requirement for sustainable development. However, their effects on crop production are confounded and warrant detailed investigation. As a key area for food production that is sensitive to climate change, the agro-pastoral transitional zone (APTZ) plays a significant role in regional food security. To investigate the respective effects of crop distribution and climate change on crop production, the well-established GIS-based Environmental Policy Integrated climate (EPIC) model was adopted with different scenario designs in this study. From 1980 to 2010, the crop distribution for wheat, maize, and rice witnessed a dramatic change due to agricultural policy adjustments and ecological engineering-related construction in the APTZ. At the same time, notable climate change was observed. The simulation results indicated that the climate change had a positive impact on the crop production of wheat, maize, and rice, while the crop distribution change led to an increase in the production of maize and rice, but a decrease in the wheat production. Comparatively, crop distribution change had a larger impact on wheat (–1.71 × 106 t) and maize (8.53 × 106 t) production, whereas climate change exerted a greater effect on rice production (0.58 × 106 t), during the period from 1980 to 2010 in the APTZ. This study is helpful to understand the mechanism of the effects of crop distribution and climate change on crop production, and aid policy makers in reducing the threat of future food insecurity.

Changes in climate Regionalization Indices in China during 1961–2010

The regionalization of climate in China is based on a three-level classification in terms of lasting days for accumulated temperature （AT）,aridity index,and July mean *** on daily meteorological observational data from 756 stations,trends and interdecadal variation in indices for classifying temperature zones,moisture regions and climatic subregions in the period 1961-2010 are *** reveal that the nationwide AT ≥ 10℃C （AT10） and its lasting days are basically increasing,while aridity in northern Xinjiang is *** increasing trend of July mean temperature in North China is found to be notably larger than in South *** terms of their national averages,a marked step increase of AT10 and its lasting period,as well as July mean temperature occurred around 1997,while the aridity index presents no such clear *** comparing regionalization areas for 1998-2010 with those for 1961-97,it is found that the semi-humid,semi-dry and dry regions in the sub-temperate zone,as well as the humid region in the middle subtropical zone,have experienced substantial shrinkage in terms of *** contrast,the areas of semi-dry and dry regions in the warm temperate zone,as well as the humid region in the south subtropical zone,present drastically increasing *** to the influence of such step changes that took place in 1997,that particular point in time should be given close attention in future studies regarding the regionalization of climate in China.

＜正＞In the past few decades, the climate system has demonstrated noticeable trends. Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data, we show that in the Northern-Hemisphere extratropics and high latitudes decadal atmospheric trends exhibit opposite tendencies between early winter （November-December） and late winter （February-March） since the late 1970s. In early-winter months, the trends are characterized by surface air temperature （SAT） cooling over high-latitude continents associated with warming over the Arctic polar region, decelerated extratropical zonal winds in both the troposphere and stratosphere accompanied by increased poleward wave fluxes, warming in the stratospheric Arctic contrasted with cooling in the midlatitude stratosphere, and a weakened Ferrel cell. In contrast, the late-winter trends are characterized by SAT warming over high-latitude continents associated with cooling over the Arctic biased toward Greenland, accelerated extratropical zonal winds accompanied by enhanced equatorward wave fluxes, strong cooling in the stratospheric Arctic contrasted with relatively weak cooling in the midlatitude stratosphere, and a strengthened Ferrel cell. In both early and late winter months, these trends show spatial coherence of interaction between the troposphere and the stratosphere as well as between the tropics and higher latitudes. Whether and how the opposite trends are caused by external forcing, such as increasing greenhouse gases and stratospheric ozone depletion, will be discussed.
