Population structure and genome‑wide evolutionary signatures reveal putative climate‑driven habitat change and local adaptation in the large yellow croaker

The large yellow croaker(Larimichthys crocea)is one of the most economically valuable marine fsh in China and is a notable species in ecological studies owing to a serious collapse of wild germplasm in the past few decades.The stock division and species distribution,which have important implications for ecological protection,germplasm recovery,and fshery resource management,have been debated since the 1960s.However,it is still uncertain even how many stocks exist in this species.To address this,we evaluated the fne-scale genetic structure of large yellow croaker populations distributed along the eastern and southern Chinese coastline based on 7.64 million SNP markers.Compared with the widely accepted stock boundaries proposed in the 1960s,our results revealed that a climate-driven habitat change probably occurred between the Naozhou(Nanhai)Stock and the Ming-Yuedong(Mindong)Stock.The boundary between these two stocks might have shifted northwards from the Pearl River Estuary to the northern area of the Taiwan Strait,accompanied by highly asymmetric introgression.In addition,we found divergent landscapes of natural selection between the stocks inhabiting northern and southern areas.The northern population exhibited highly agminated signatures of strong natural selection in genes related to developmental processes,whereas moderate and interspersed selective signatures were detected in many immune-related genes in the southern populations.These fndings establish the stock status and genome-wide evolutionary landscapes of large yellow croaker,providing a basis for conservation,fsheries management and further evolutionary biology studies.

Coastal inundation causes considerable impacts on communities and economies.Sea level rise due to climate change increases the occurrence of coastal flood events,creating more challenges to coastal societies.Here we intend to draw the understanding of coastal inundation from our early studies,and provide a silhouette of our approaches in assessing climate change impacts as well as developing risk-based climate adaptation.As a result,we impart a distinctive view of the adaption towards the integration of asset design,coastal planning and policy development,which reflect multiscale approaches crossing individual systems to regions and then nation.Having the approaches,we also discussed the constraints that would be faced in adaptation implementation.In this regard,we initially follow the risk approach by illustrating hazards,exposure and vulnerability in relation to coastal inundation,and manifest the impact and risk assessment by considering an urban environment pertinent to built,natural,and socioeconomic systems.We then extend the scope and recommend the general approaches in developing adaptation to coastal inundation under climate change towards ameliorating overall risks,practically,by the reduction in exposure and vulnerability in virtue of the integration of design,planning and polices.In more details,a resilience design is introduced,to effectively enhance the capacity of built assets to resist coastal inundation impact.We then emphasize on the cost-effective adaptation for coastal planning,which delineates the problem of under-adaptation that leaves some potential benefits unrealized or over-adaptation that potentially consumes an excessive amount of resources.Finally,we specifically explore the issues in planning and policies in mitigating climate change risks,and put forward some emerging constraints in adaptation implementation.It suggests further requirements of harmonizing while transforming national policies into the contents aligned with provincial and local governments,communities,and households.

Evidence-based guidelines for greener,healthier,more resilient neighbourhoods:Introducing the 3–30–300 rule

The important contributions of urban trees and green spaces to for example,climate moderation and public health have been recognized.This paper discusses guidelines and norms that promote the benefi ts of viewing green,living amongst green,and having easy access to green spaces for recreational use.Having trees and other vegetation in sight from one’s home,place of work,or school has important mental health and performance benefi ts.Local tree canopy cover is positively associated with cooling and other aspects of climate moderation.With public green spaces in proximity to one’s home stimulates regular use of these areas and results in positive impacts on mental,physical,and social health.After analyzing existing guidelines and rules for urban green space planning and provision,a new,comprehensive guideline is presented,known as the‘3–30–300 rule’for urban forestry.This guideline aims to provide equitable access to trees and green spaces and their benefi ts by setting the thresholds of having at least 3 well-established trees in view from every home,school,and place of work,no less than a 30%tree canopy in every neighbourhood;and no more than 300 m to the nearest public green space from every residence.Current implementation of this new guideline is discussed,as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using this evidence-based but also clear and simple rules.

Research on the national climate governance system toward carbon neutrality-A critical literature review

Global climate governance has entered the era of carbon neutrality,as a growing number of countries have set the goal of carbon neutrality for long-term emissions reduction toward the mid-21st century.In 2020,China also pledged itself to the goal of carbon neutrality,which creates an urgent demand for this country to establish a systematic and integrated national climate governance system.Against this background,this paper conducts a systematic literature review of climate governance systems from the perspectives of top-level design and the governance paradigm to bring insights into climate governance toward carbon neutrality.The results show that although there are interactions between decarbonization and other environmental,social and economic fields,research gaps still exist when enhancing climate governance toward carbon neutrality.For example,issues regarding incorporating climate factors into the overall economic and social layout,strengthening the capacity of data collection relevant to climate adaptation,integrating climate mitigation and adaption actions,as well as connecting domestic climate governance and international cooperation,need to be further addressed.In addition,within the national governance system,studies combining both regional and sectoral concerns and the intertemporal dynamic allocation mechanism need to be further addressed when China decomposes its national climate target.Moreover,the division of power between the central government and local government,as well as the communication scheme between government and non-state actors,also turns out to be important for effective governance.Based on this analysis,policy implications are further proposed for China’s formulation and implementation of long-term strategies of climate governance toward carbon neutrality.

This research paper assesses the reality of climate-Smart Agriculture(CSA)practices’potential to promote the outcomes of sustainable food systems(SFS)within Ghana’s smallholding agriculture context.The study demon-strates that rural farmers generally perceive CSA’s contribution to‘food and nutrition security’and‘economic performance’as more important than CSA’s contribution to‘social equity’and‘environmental stewardship’.From a narrow perspective,the study demonstrates that farmers perceive CSA’s potential to‘prevent pest and disease outbreaks’and‘increase human capital information’as the most important contribution of CSA to SFS outcomes.In contrast,CSA’s potential to promote environmental stewardship is perceived as the least important among Ghana’s rural farmers.This enormity of displacement of smallholders’perceptions at large is motivated by de-mographic,socioeconomic and ecological factors.Moreso,the CSA for SFS outcomes narratives is driven by farmers’self-apprise,social networks and other local information dissemination agents.Furthermore,research findings suggest farmers’awareness of CSA practices and interventions is deficient owing to unmet training and information needs for approximately 82%of the CSA practices and interventions.This situation elucidates the dichotomy of CSA practices’narratives as tools for attaining food,nutrition security and economic performance to the detriment of critical issues such as increasing awareness and building farmers’capacity to engage with CSA practices while also managing socio-ecological trade-offs that emerge over time due to engagement with CSA.Critical(re)orientation is needed across the scale to drive CSA practices and interventions that confine cli-mate adaptation and food production practices within safe planetary boundaries without undermining social,economic,food and nutrition security needs.

climate adaptation in architectural technology,as a communication medium between nature and human beings,has become a new development trend in response to climate change and to encourage energy conservation and environmental protection.This paper aims to deal with the problems from the perspective of architectural technology in modern new rural construction.Based on the theory of climate adaptation,this paper expounds the definition of climate adaptation in architectural technology,and presents two operating mechanisms to guide and to defend.A suitable technical roadmap is thus offered for the development of architectural technology in rural areas,which can be summarized as the better design of fundamental schemes,preferential selection of passive architectural technology,reasonable implementation of low-energy active architectural technology,and efficient use of active architectural technology with high energy consumption,in order to provide reference for sustainable development of new rural construction.The results show that the response of architectural technology to climate change needs not only to focus on the material level,but also to pay attention to the activities of users.

The need for data integration to address the challenges of climate change on the Guyana coast

Guyana’s capacity to address the impacts of climate change on its coastal environment requires the ability to mon-itor,quantify and understand coastal change over short-,medium-and long-term.Understanding the drivers of change in coastal and marine environment can be achieved through the accurate measurement and critical anal-yses of morphologies,flows,processes and responses.This manuscript presents a strategy developed to create a central resource,database and web-based platform to integrate data and information on the drivers and the changes within Guyana coastal and marine environment.The strategy involves four complimentary work pack-ages including data collection,development of a platform for data integration,application of the data for coastal change analyses and consultation with stakeholders.The last aims to assess the role of the integrated data sys-tems to support strategic governance and sustainable decision-making.It is hoped that the output of this strategy would support the country’s climate-focused agencies,organisations,decision-makers,and researchers in their tasks and endeavours.

This paper selected Manyuan Village in Oliver Plain(Ganlanba) as a case study to analyze the climate adaptation of traditional villages in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture with high temperature and high humidity. Three main thermal environment elements, i.e., temperature, humidity, and wind speed, were collected for comfort evaluation through Kriging analysis and UTCI equivalent temperature calculation. The research concluded the characteristics of the climate adaptation and the spatial factors affecting the comfort degree of traditional Dai villages, including mountain, vegetation, water body, pavilion and corridor, and underlying surface. Finally, the authors also discussed the spatial optimization proposals to improve the comfort degree of traditional Dai villages.

Drought is primarily an agricultural phenomenon that refers to conditions where plants are responsive to certain levels of moisture stress that affect both the vegetative growth and yield of crops. It occurs when supply of moisture stored in the soil is insufficient to meet the optimum need of a particular type of crop. Causes of drought in Bangladesh are related to climate variability and non-availability of surface water resources. While it may be possible to indicate the immediate cause of a drought in a particular location, it often is not possible to identify an underlying cause. Therefore, to improve all these services in favour of enhancing agricultural production and reducing food insecurity in Bangladesh, it is mandatory to develop an effective way for disseminating the SPI data indicating drought indices to farmers, and enhance drought and climate resilience. To develop future plan and policy in agricultural sector of Bangladesh, it is vital to understand the previous droughts events with accurate indicators. Since this study will contribute to the agricultural development of Bangladesh therefore there is an obvious need to understand the change of drought frequency all over Bangladesh using a standardized drought index. The main intention of this project is to prepare a proper baseline for forecasting drought indices using SPI data. So, the final outcome of this project would be a knowledge base where a proper forecasting tools and dissemination networks can be updated/developed for farmers.

Analysis of climate Suitability of Lipu Taro Planting in Lipu County

Based on the analysis of planting situation, climatic characteristics and field management technology of Lipu taro in each growth period, climate suitability of Lipu taro was studied. The results show that temperature affects the growth of Upu taro most greatly, and sunshine hours and precipitation also influence it obviously. In order to make Lipu taro develop well, it is necessary to utilize climate resources rationally and strengthen the control of diseases and insect pests and field management.
