Post-harvest storage of lime fruits (citrus aurantifolia) following high humidity and low temperature in a modified brick wall cooler

The use of a modified brick wall Evaporative Cooling Chamber(ECC)for extending the shelf life of limes(citrus aurantifolia)was compared with ambient *** shelf life inside of the ECC was extended by five to twenty days relative to ambient *** inside temperatures were about 4-6℃less than the ambient temperatures,and humidity was about 10%-20%*** was conducted to check the weight loss and freshness of lime fruits,and data were observed *** loss in limes kept inside the chamber for ten days was 1.8%and in ambient conditions it was around 9.8%.The color of the fruit changed to yellowish inside the ECC and the control which was kept outside became *** storage did not adversely affect fruit firmness,or the percentage of soluble solids or titratable acidity of the *** modified ECC does not require mechanical or electrical energy input and can be constructed with locally available material by unskilled labour.

Oviposition preference of swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polytes （Lepidoptera Papilionidae） on four Rutaceae （Sapindales） host plant species

Oviposition preference and egg deposition site selection by the butterfly, Papilio polytes L. （Lepidoptera： Papilionidae） on four rutaceous host plants, citrus aurantofolia （Christm.） Swing., citrus hystrix DC., citrus reticulata Blanco, and Murraya koenigii （L.） Sprengel, were assessed in field cages measuring 2 × 2 ×2 m. Simultaneous two-choice and four-choice oviposition tests of whole host plants were conducted. The mean total number of eggs laid per plant on C. reticulata in the two-choice test was significantly higher （P 〈 0.01） than those on C. aurantifolia, C. hystrix, andM. koenigii. Among the three other host plants, C. aurantifolia was preferred over C. hystrix, and M. koenigii （P 〈 0.01） and C. hystrix was preferred over M. koenigii （P 〈 0.01）. In the four-choice test, C. reticulata was highly preferred and significantly different from C. hystrix and M. koenigii. However, no oviposition preference was detected with C. aurantifolia. Among the various plant parts in the two- and four-choice tests, eggs on leaves of each plant were the highest, followed by numbers on stems, and negligible numbers on pots. These numbers on leaves of C. reticulata and C. aurantifolia were not significantly different （P 〉 0.05）, but differed significantly （P 〈 0.01） from those on leaves of C. hystrix and M. koenigii. The quantitative trend of egg-laying on stems was very similar to that observed for the leaves. Papilio polytes showed strong preference to lay eggs on the underside of leaves of all host plants than on the upper side or on the petiole. More eggs were laid on the upper side of each host plant than on its petiole. The four host plants in descending order of preference were C. reticulata 〉 C. aurantifolia 〉 C. hystrix 〉 M. koenigii. Although M. koenigii was the least preferred, it has the potential to serve as an alternative host plant for P. polytes which can be manipulated when necessary, to alleviate the infestation of this pest to the citrus industry.

Effects of Trifoliate Interstocks on Growth and Yield of Mexican Lime Trees

This study was carried out to determine the effect of 21 citrus interstocks and the control citrus macrophylla rootstock budded with Mexican lime （citrus aurantifolia （Chistm.） Swingle） on growth and yield. Three types of mandarin and 13 trifoliate types including ＂C-35＂ and ＂Benton＂ used as interstocks, developed vigorous trees similar or more productive than the control. ＂Morton＂ and ＂Benecke＂ citranges, ＂Pomeroy＂ trifoliate trifoliate orange and the ＂Severinia buxifolia＂ interstocks showed a moderated effect on tree growth. Flying dragon （FDT） and Hiryu trifoliate oranges performed as semi-dwarfing interstocks. These interstocks reduced the tree height, canopy volume and surface area covered by the foliage on 25%-35%, 20%-30% and 20%-30%, respectively, compared to the control. While most interstocks surpassed the assigned area of growth （24 m2） in the 7th year, ＂FDT＂ and ＂Hiryu＂ did that at the 10th year. These semi-dwarfing interstocks produced up to 80 kg/tree per year. Most treatments recorded the highest production from the 8th to 10th year, except FDT and Hiryu, which showed the highest yield （130 kg/tree） from the 5th to 7th year. This study provides useful results to face the huanglongbing （HLB） problem using moderate or semi-dwarfing interstocks for Mexican lime orchards in high density plantations.
