The distribution of phytoplankton size and major influencing factors in the surface waters near the northern end of the Antarctic Peninsula

The waters near the Antarctic Peninsula have always been a study hot spot because of their variable and unique oceanographic *** determine the distribution and possible influencing factors on phytoplankton size and abundance near the Antarctic Peninsula,a large-scale survey was conducted during the austral summer *** were collected in 27 stations located in the Drake Passage(DP),South Shetland Islands(SSI),and South Orkney Islands(SOI).Phytoplankton communities were described using chlorophyll a(chl a),flow cytometry and light microscopy to cover a size range from pico-to ***,especially small nanophytoplankton(2-6μm)with abundance ranging from 0.66×10^(3) cells/mL to 8.46×10^(3) cells/mL,was predominant throughout the study *** different regions,there was an obvious size *** proportion of picophytoplankton near the Elephant Island(EI)and DP was higher than other regions,and larger cells were found mainly in east of *** distribution of phytoplankton abundance detected by flow cytometry was not completely consistent with chl a concentrations due to the contribution of larger cells to chl *** influencing factors on the phytoplankton size distribution were *** properties of water masses such as temperature and salinity can influence the phytoplankton size *** analysis revealed that only picophytoplankton is significantly correlated with *** and Fe availability might affect phytoplankton abundance and size distribution especially near the waters of SSI and EI in this *** was also speculated that the abundance of cryptophytes is possibly related to ice melting.

Seasonal variations and distributions of dissolved free and total carbohydrates at the ?zmir Bay, Aegean Sea

Seasonal variations and distributions of dissolved carbohydrate concentrations at the ？zmir Bay were investigated with salinity, chlorophyll a（chl a）, and dissolved organic carbon（DOC） levels to understand their *** were collected from surface, subsurface and bottom depths at seven stations. DOC concentrations ranged from 32.2 to 244.2 μmol/L, and in general, DOC levels increased from winter to summer, then slightly decreased in autumn. Monosaccharide（MCHO）, polysaccharide（PCHO） and total dissolved carbohydrate（TDCHO） levels were found between 0.7–8.3, 0.7–19.5, and 2.6–24.6 μmol/L. DOC, MCHO, PCHO and TDCHO levels were found higher in middle-inner bays, under the influence of anthropogenic inputs, compared to outer bay. Seasonal changes of MCHO/DOC, PCHO/DOC and TDCHO/DOC ratios were statistically significant（p〈0.05）and the ratios showed decrease trends from winter to summer-autumn seasons. Distributions of TDCHO/DOC ratios at wide ranges（2.5%–42.3%） indicated the presence of newly forming and degrading fractions of *** to results of factor analysis, chl a, MCHO and TDCHO were explained in the same factor groups. In conclusion, the results showed that dissolved carbohydrate levels in the ？zmir Bay might be influenced by biological processes and terrestrial/anthropogenic inputs.

Effects of dissolved organic matter on the growth and pigments synthesis of Spirulina platensis (Arthrospira)

Excessive accumulation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the culture ponds of Spirulina platensis is usually considered to be one of the potential factors affecting the production of S. platensis, however, we are not quite aware of effects of DOM on the growth and pigments synthesis of S. platensis. In the present study, S. platensis was grown in batch or semi-continuous cultures using the filtrate in the culture ponds that had not been renewed for years. It was found that disssolved organic carbon up to 60 mg/L did not bring about an inhibitory effect on the growth of S. platensis, but increased the contents of chlorophyll a and phycocyanin instead. However, further accumulation of dissolved organic matter could decrease the content of chlorophyll a .

Standing stock of phytoplankton and primary productivity in Penaeus orientalis larval multiplication releasing area of the Xiangshan Bay

The standing stock of phytoplankton (phy. ) and primary productivity (pp) in the Xiangshan Bay were observed in 1992. The results showed higher biological parameters in the bay. The average chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration was (3. 50 5. 93 ) mg/m3 and the primary productivity (444. 5 871. 0) mg/(m2 d). The distribution of chl a and productivity showed distinct spatial and temporal patterns in the bay. The continent influence was Obvious at the top of the bay, lower seawater exchange and higher stability led to higher standing stock of phytoplankton and productivity. At the bay mouth, seawater exchanged continuously with adjacent waters by rapid currents, resulting in fast and unstable exchange and lower standing stock of phytoplankton and primary productivity. The seasonal characters of those parameters were pronounced, in the sequence of spring, summer, autumn and winter. The results of size--fractionated showed that the average contribution of the nano--and picoplankton (chl a and productivity were 75 % and 87%, respectively, indicating their importance in phytoplankton community biomass and productivity of the Xiangshan Bay.

Kinetic Fluorescence Spectral Analysis of Core Antennas CP43 and CP47 of Photosystem Ⅱ with Ultrafast Time-resolved Technology

Ultrafast time_resolved fluorescence experiments have been performed with core antennas CP43 and CP47 of PS Ⅱ. Their dynamic fluorescence spectra were obtained with excitation wavelength 514.5 nm. For CP43, the emission spectrum was found to be from 640 to 780 nm with a peak at ～680 nm and the lifetime of fluorescence was 3.54 ns. For CP47, the emission spectrum was from 630 to 775 nm with a peak at ～691 nm and the fluorescence lifetime was 3.22 ns. The fluorescence emission efficiencies of chl a in CP43 and CP47 were calculated to be approximately 38.3% and 40.6%, respectively. The energy transfer from β_Car to chl a in CP43 and CP47 was discussed. The rates of energy transfer from β_Car to chl a were measured to be about 9.6×10 11 s -1 and 1.3×10 12 s -1 and energy transfer efficiencies 47.5% and 66.5% respectively. The edge_edge distances between β_Car and chl a in CP43 and CP47 were estimated to be ～0.110 nm and ～0.085 nm respectively.

Numerical Analysis of the Biogeochemical Parameters in the Bay of Bengal

Oceanic nutrient cycling plays a key role in understanding how oceanic biogeochemical parameters respond in varying physical and anthropogenically controlled processes. OA （Objective Analysis） of monthly climatology of WOAI3 （World Ocean Atlas 13） nutrient data of 5 km resolution called Nutrient-Climo has been done in this paper for analyzing the nutrient-rich region in the BOB （Bay of Bengal） and the mechanisms of physical forces were examined using six years （2002-2007） global ocean monthly analysis datasets based on the SODA v2.0.4 （Simple Ocean Data Assimilation package）. The upwelled zones established from the circulation pattern were well synchronized with the nitrate rich zones. The POC （particulate organic carbon） of 5 km resolution has been analyzed from MODIS （Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） data and chl a （chlorophyll a） concentration SeaWiFS （Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor） data of 9 km resolution are used to predict the productive zones in the BOB. In this paper, we examined that chl a concentration （above 0.5 mg/m3） is found during the post-monsoon followed by winter in the north-western, north-eastern coast and head BOB as the source of nutrients is also supplementary due to high input of litter and sediment associated nutrients that are released during estuarine transport.

Investigate the response of phytoplankton size structure to changes of environmental factors,total and size-fractioned phytoplankton(pico-,nano- and microphytoplankton) chl a concentration were studied in autumn in Xiamen Bay(China).The distribution of total Chi a(with a mean of 1.283 μg/L) showed higher in west area than that in east area,similar to that of SiO-Si and *** proportion of microphytoplankton was higher in oligotrophic Da’deng water,and small(pico- and nano-) phytoplankton proportion was higher in nutrient-rich water,probably due to irradiance and zooplankton grazing pressure *** with the historical results,nanophytoplankton was still the dominant contributor(60.7%) in the bay,however the proportion of picophytoplankton increased in West *** index of phytoplankton was low in nutrient-rich *** between phytoplankton and environmental factors indicated that nutrients availability,temperature,irradiance and zooplankton grazing impacted size-fractionated phytoplankton growth in Xiamen Bay.

滤食性贝类与沉水植物是水生态系统的重要组成部分,对浅水湖泊生态系统的结构、功能和过程具有重要影响,但两者共存产生的生态环境效应尚不明确。本文以滤食性背角无齿蚌(Anodonta woodiana)及苦草(Vallisneria natans)为对象,通过构建中型水生态系统,设置对照组、蚌处理组、草处理组与蚌草共存组,研究了滤食性贝类、沉水植物及其共存对水体富营养化的影响。结果显示:背角无齿蚌显著降低了上覆水的亚硝态氮(NO2--N)含量,但对其他形态营养盐含量影响并不显著;苦草提高了水体的pH值,降低了上覆水的营养盐水平,总氮(TN)、硝态氮(NO3--N)、亚硝态氮(NO2--N)、总磷(TP)、总溶解性磷(TDP)、可溶性活性磷(SRP)的含量显著下降;蚌草共存降低了上覆水中各形态氮、磷营养盐含量,提高了水体的pH值。背角无齿蚌、苦草及两者共存均降低了上覆水的浮游藻类chl a含量、悬浮物(TSS)含量及烧失量。其中,蚌处理组沉积物表层的光照强度高于对照组,表明背角无齿蚌对系统的光照条件改善效果显著,促进了底栖藻类与附着藻类的生长。背角无齿蚌促进了苦草的生长,实验结束时,共存组苦草的干重、株高、根长均显著高于草处理组。本研究表明,滤食性背角无齿蚌、沉水植物苦草及其共存均可改善水体富营养化状况。背角无齿蚌与苦草起到协同净化水质的作用,对水体富营养化改善效果更佳
