chiral metamaterials(CMs)composed by artificial chiral resonators have attracted great attentions in the recent decades due to their strong chiroptical resonance and identifiable interaction with chiral materials,facilitating practical applications in chiral biosensing,chiral emission,and display ***,the complex geometry of CMs improves the fabrication difficulty and hinders their scalable fabrication for practical applications,especially in the visible and ultraviolet *** potential strategy is the colloidal lithography that enables parallel fabrication for scalable and various planar ***,we demonstrate a stepwise colloidal lithography technique that uses sequential deposition from multiple CMs and expand their variety and *** geometry and optical chirality of building blocks from single deposition are systematically investigated,and their combination enables a significant extension of the range of chiral patterns by multiple-step *** approach resulted in a myriad of complex designs with different characteristic sizes,compositions,and shapes,which are particularly beneficial for the development of nanophotonic *** addition,we designed a flexible chiral device based on PDMS,which exhibits a good CD value and excellent stability even after multiple inward and outward *** excellent compatibility to various substrates makes the planar CMs more flexible in practical applications in microfluidic biosensing.

Enhanced reflection chiroptical effect of planar anisotropic chiral metamaterials placed on the interface of two media

The strong chiroptical effect is highly desirable and has a wide range of applications in biosensing, chiral catalysis,polarization tuning, and chiral photo detection. In this work, we find a simple method to enhance the reflection circular dichroism(CDR) by placing the planar anisotropic chiral metamaterials(i.e., Z-shaped PACMs) on the interface of two media(i.e., Z-PCMI) with a large refractive index difference. The maximum reflection CDR from the complex system can reach about 0.840 when the refractive index is set as ntop = 4.0 and nbottom = 1.49, which is approximately three times larger than that of placing the Z-shaped PACMs directly on the substrate(i.e., Z-PCMS). While the minimum reflection CDR is 0.157 when the refractive index is set as ntop = 1.0 and nbottom = 1.49. So we can get a large available range of reflection CDR from -0.840 to -0.157. Meanwhile, the transmission CDT remains unchanged with the refractive index ntop increment. Our in-depth research indicates that the large reflection CDR is derived from the difference of non-conversion components of the planar anisotropic chiral metamaterials’ reflection matrices. In short, we provide a simple and practical method to enhance the chiroptical effect by changing the refractive index difference between two media without having to design a complex chiral structure.

We numerically demonstrated a novel chiral metamaterial to achieve broadband asymmetric transmission(AT)of linearly polarized electromagnetic waves in terahertz(THz)*** proposed metamaterial unit cell exhibits no rotational symmetry with vanadium dioxide(VO_(2)) inclusion embedded between Dirac semimetals(DSMs)*** resonant frequency of AT can be dynamically tunable by varying the Fermi energy(EF)of the *** insulator-to-metal phase transition of VO_(2) enables the amplitude of the AT to be dynamically *** transmission coefficient|T_(yx)|can be adjusted from 0.756 to nearly 0 by modifying the conductivity of VO_(2).Meanwhile,the AT parameter intensity of linearly polarized incidence can be actively controlled from 0.55 to almost 0,leading to a switch for *** VO_(2)is in its insulator state,the proposed device achieves broadband AT parameter greater than 0.5 from 1.21 THz to 1.80 THz with a bandwidth of 0.59 *** the incident wave propagates along the backward(-z)direction,the cross-polarized transmission|T_(yx)|reaches a peak value 0.756 at 1.32 THz,whereas the value of|T_(xy)|well below 0.157 in the concerned *** the other hand,the co-polarized transmission|T_(xx)|and|T_(yy)|remained equal in the whole frequency *** work provides a novel approach in developing broadband,tunable,as well as switchable AT electromagnetic devices.

In the past twenty years, electromagnetic metamaterials represented by left-handed metamaterials（LHMs） have attracted considerable attention due to the unique properties such as negative refraction, perfect lens, and electromagnetic cloaks. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of our group＇s work on metamaterials and metasurfaces. We present several types of LHMs and chiral metamaterials. As a two-dimensional equivalent of bulk three-dimensional metamaterials, metasurfaces have led to a myriad of devices due to the advantages of lower profile, lower losses, and simpler to fabricate than bulk three-dimensional metamaterials. We demonstrate the novel microwave metadevices based on metamaterials and metasurfaces： perfect absorbers and microwave patch antennas, including novel transmission line antennas,high gain resonant cavity antennas, wide scanning phased array antennas, and circularly polarized antennas.

A chiral metasurface is proposed to realize a tri-band polarization angle insensitive cross-polarization converter. The unit cell of the chiral metamaterial is composed by four twisted anisotropic structure pairs in four-fold rotation symmetry. The simulation results show that this device can work at 9.824 GHz, 11.39 GHz, and 13.37 GHz with low loss and a high polarization conversion ratio （PCR） of more than 99%. The proposed design can transmit the co-polarization wave at 14.215 GHz, like a frequency selective surface. The study of the current and electric fields distributions indicates that the cross-polarization transmission is due to electric dipole coupling.

In this paper, we propose a three-layered chiral metamaterial (CMM) that exhibits an asymmetric transmission effect for linearly polarized waves along forwardly and backwardly propagating in the microwave region, which not only realizes the asymmetric transmission effect of multi-frequency points for linearly polarized wave in microwave band, but also breaks through the limitation of single transformation from linear polarization to linear polarization. Numerical simulation results indicate that incident wave for linearly polarized waves will be converted and transmitted as a circularly polarized wave along the forward direction at 8.31 GHz. Moreover, the asymmetric transmission (AT) parameter Δ achieves 0.8 around 12 GHz, proving the existence of strong polarization conversion and diode-like function. The proposed CMM shows great potential applications in high performance linear polarization convertor and isolator in microwave frequency.
