Liver cancer is a severe concern for public health officials since the clinical cases are increasing each year,with an estimated 5-year survival rate of 30%–35%after diagnosis.Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)constitutes a significant subtype of liver cancer(approximate75%)and is considered primary liver cancer.Treatment for liver cancer mainly depends on the stage of its progression,where surgery including,hepatectomy and liver transplantation,and ablation and radiotherapy are the prime choice.For advanced liver cancer,various drugs and immunotherapy are used as first-line treatment,whereas second-line treatment includes chemotherapeutic drugs from natural and synthetic origins.Sorafenib and lenvatinib are first-line therapies,while regorafenib and ramucirumab are secondline therapy.Various metabolic and signaling pathways such as Notch,JAK/STAT,Hippo,TGF-β,and Wnt have played a critical role during HCC progression.Dysbiosis has also been implicated in liver cancer.Drug-induced toxicity is a key obstacle in the treatment of liver cancer,necessitating the development of effective and safe medications,with natural compounds such as resveratrol,curcumin,diallyl sulfide,and others emerging as promising anticancer agents.This review highlights the current status of liver cancer research,signaling pathways,therapeutic targets,current treatment strategies and the chemopreventive role of various natural products in managing liver cancer.

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a type of cancer with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide and has become a global health problem. The conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy regimen for CRC not only has a low cure rate but also causes side effects. Many studies have shown that adequate intake of fruits and vegetables in the diet may have a protective effect on CRC occurrence, possibly due to the special biological protective effect of the phytochemicals in these foods. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that phytochemicals play strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer roles by regulating specific signaling pathways and molecular markers to inhibit the occurrence and development of CRC. This review summarizes the progress on CRC prevention using the phytochemicals sulforaphane, curcumin and resveratrol, and elaborates on the specific underlying mechanisms. Thus, we believe that phytochemicals might provide a novel therapeutic approach for CRC prevention, but future clinical studies are needed to confirm the specific preventive effect of phytochemicals on cancer.

BACKGROUND Some substances of plant origin have been reported to exert an effect in reducing intestinal neoplasm development,especially in animal models.Adenomatous polyposis coli multiple intestinal neoplasia-ApcMin/+is the most studied murine model of genetic intestinal carcinogenesis.AIM To assess whether an enriched nutritional formulation(silymarin,boswellic acid and curcumin)with proven“in vitro”and“in vivo”anti-carcinogenetic properties may prevent inherited intestinal cancer in animal model.METHODS Forty adenomatous polyposis coli multiple intestinal neoplasia-ApcMin/+mice were used for the study of cancer prevention.They were divided into two groups:20 assumed standard and 20 enriched diet.At the 110th d animals were sacrificed.In each group,four subgroups received intraperitoneal bromodeoxyuridine injection at different times(24,48,72 and 96 h before the sacrifice)in order to assess epithelial turnover.Moreover,we evaluated the following parameters:Intestinal polypoid lesion number and size on autoptic tissue,dysplasia and neoplasia areas by histological examination of the whole small intestine,inflammation by histology and cytokine mRNA expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction,bromodeoxyuridine and TUNEL immunofluorescence for epithelial turnover and apoptosis,respectively.Additionally,we performed western blotting analysis for the expression of estrogen alpha and beta receptors,cyclin D1 and cleaved caspase 3 in normal and polypoid tissues.RESULTS Compared to standard,enriched diet reduced the total number(203 vs 416)and the mean±SD/animal(12.6±5.0 vs 26.0±8.8;P<0.001)of polypoid lesions.In enriched diet group a reduction in polyp size was observed(P<0.001).Histological inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression were similar in both groups.Areas of low-grade dysplasia(P<0.001)and intestinal carcinoma(IC;P<0.001)were significantly decreased in enriched diet group.IC was observed in 100%in standard and 85%in enriched formulation assuming animals.Enriched diet showed a faster epitheli

Alginate encapsulation in Glycyrrhiza glabra L.with phyto-chemical profiling of root extracts of in vitro converted plants using GC-MS analysis

Objective: To investigate the conversion potential of alginate encapsulated nodes of Glycyrrhiza glabra with phyto-chemical evaluation of root extract of field transferred plants.Methods: The excised axenic nodal segments were encapsulated in alginate matrix planted on Murashige and Skoog(1962) medium with different supplementation and formulations of PGRs. The two year old field transferred plants were evaluated for phytocompounds analysis using GC-MS technique.Results: Varied responses were observed during the study, maximum conversion95.83% ± 2.40% was obtained in these encapsulates when planted on MS medium containing 2.5 m M Kinetin and 0.5 m M a-Naphthalene acetic acid, which eventually developed into complete plantlets in a single step. Further, GC-MS analysis showed the presence of different phyto-compounds in the methanolic root extracts of in vitro converted plants. The results obtained revealed the presence of about 47 phyto-compounds along with various potential bioactive compounds useful for industrial and pharmaceutical purposes.Conclusions: This study investigates high frequency regeneration and conversion of Glycyrrhiza glabra in a single step in short time. Also, the in vitro raised plants are analysed for bioactive compounds after field transfer, which shows the presence of numerous compounds useful for commercial and pharmacological purposes.

Curcumin has been used in traditional Indian medicine for many centuries for its anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties.There has been some promising research concerning curcumin as a safe therapeutic agent for many cancers,colorectal cancer being among them.This has been shown through research in cell cultures,animal models,and humans.At this time,it appears that curcumin’s anti-carcinogenic properties are most likely due to its effects on multiple molecular targets,such as nuclear factorκ-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells(NF-κB)and activator protein 1(AP-1).NF-κB and AP-1 are both major transcription factors that regulate inflammation and thus affect cell proliferation,differentiation and even apoptosis.Curcumin has also been shown to affect a variety of other key players involved in carcinogenesis,such as cyclooxygenase-2,matrix metallopeptidases 2 and 9 and tumor necrosis factorαinduced vascular cell adhesion molecule,just to name a few.Although many molecular targets are involved,curcumin has been well tolerated in many studies:doses up to 8 g a day have been confirmed to be safe for humans.In this brief review,we will examine the current studies and literature and touch upon many molecular pathways affected by curcumin,and demonstrate the exciting possibility of curcumin as a chemopreventive agent for colorectal cancer.

Eugenia jambolana Lam., commonly known as black plum or “jamun” is an important medicinal plant in various traditional systems of medicine. It is effective in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, inflammation, ulcers and diarrhea and preclinical studies have also shown it to possess chemopreventive, radioprotective and antineoplastic properties. The plant is rich in compounds containing anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaemferol and myrecetin. The seeds are claimed to contain alkaloid, jambosine, and glycoside jambolin or antimellin, which halts the diastatic conversion of starch into sugar. The present review has been primed to describe the existing data on the information on traditional and medicinal use.
