Geobag stepped spillway for check dams: A pilot study

check dams are widely used worldwide for the soil and water conservation. Many of them have no spillways, resulting in frequent dam breach failures during heavy rainfall events. This paper proposes a new geobag stepped spillway for small check dams. The structure of the spillway primarily consists of a stepped chute created from geobags filled with local soil compacted and consolidated with a small amount of cement. The developed composite geosynthetic material exhibits water erosion resistance,high strength against puncture, and high tensile strength. To examine the feasibility of the proposed geobag stepped spillway, a prototype pilot test was designed and constructed in a check dam in Shaanxi Province, China, with a height of 10 m and a downstream slope of 1(vertical) to 2(horizontal). More than30 overflow tests were done for a geobag stepped spillway under uncontrolled and gated weir flow conditions. Based on the measurements of flow velocities and flow depths of four cross sections, it was observed that the energy dissipation ratio ranged between 73.8% and 92.8% for all the examined conditions. In addition, no significant deformation of the geobag stepped spillway was observed, although the maximum flow velocity at the spillway toe was 6.7 m/s. This study confirms that the proposed geobag stepped spillway is a promising approach for providing an effective, safe, and economical flood release structure for small check dams.

check-dam construction is an effective and widely used method for sediment trapping in the Yellow River Basin and other places over the world that are prone to severe soil erosion.Quantitative estimations of the dynamic sediment trapped by check dams are necessary for evaluating the effects of check dams and planning the construction of new ones.In this study,we propose a new framework,named soil and water assessment tool(SWAT)–dynamic check dam(DCDam),for modeling the sediment trapped by check dams dynamically,by integrating the widely utilized SWAT model and a newly developed module called DCDam.We then applied this framework to a typical loess watershed,the Yan River Basin,to assess the time-varying effects of check-dam networks over the past 60 years(1957–2016).The DCDam module generated a specific check-dam network to conceptualize the complex connections at each time step(monthly).In addition,the streamflow and sediment load simulated by using the SWAT model were employed to force the sediment routing in the check-dam network.The evaluation results revealed that the SWAT-DCDam framework performed satisfactorily,with an overestimation of 11.50%,in simulating sediment trapped by check dams,when compared with a field survey of the accumulated sediment deposition.For the Yan River Basin,our results indicated that the designed structural parameters of check dams have evolved over the past 60 years,with higher dams(37.14%and 9.22%increase for large dams and medium dams,respectively)but smaller controlled areas(46.03%and 10.56%decrease for large dams and medium dams,respectively)in recent years.Sediment retained by check dams contributed to approximately 15.00%of the total sediment load reduction in the Yan River during 1970–2016.Thus,our developed framework can be a promising tool for evaluating check-dam effects,and this study can provide valuable information and support to decision-making for soil and water conservation and check-dam planning and management.

＜正＞Lots of sediment deposited in the tradition fishway and lost their function. Therefore, we modified the fish-bone-type fishway to promote the sediment transport efficiency. An experimental research of hydraulic and sediment transport characteristics for fish-bone-type fishway were carried out in this study that is to understand the mechanism of hydraulic and sediment transport of check-dams fishway of upstream watershed in Taiwan, china. Also, the design of a fish-bone-type fishway is established based upon such a scheme in order to provide a better fishway for the indigenous fish species in Taiwan, China. The sediment transport efficiency of fishway is above 97% for the gradient 1/8;the sediment transport efficiency of fishway is above 93.5% for the gradient 1/10. This will influence the efficiency of sediment transport whether the positioning of fish-bone-type fishway is appropriate or not. Result shows that among these two gradients of sediment transport, the better gradient of sediment transport is 1/8. The result also provides an on-site formula of rate of flow for measurement. This finding can provide a reference resource for on-site experiment and evaluation of the design.
