We have used over 90,000 ISR electron density profiles over Arecibo incoherent scatter radar(ISR) and more than 84,000 ISR electron density profiles over Millstone Hill ISR to fit the shape of the *** long-term incoherent scatter radar(ISR) observations are used to yield the equivalent shape factors of the assumed chapman layer for the topside *** factors are firstly used to replace the constant factor of the chapman alpha layer(f=0.5) or chapman beta layer(f=1.0) and assuming that the scale height is equal to atomic oxygen scale *** results show that the averaged topside shape generally obeys the chapman alpha layer except for some *** is also revealed that the shape factor depends apparently on local time, season,and solar activity in detail *** shape factor is also different at two ISR stations of Arecibo and Millstone *** of keeping a constant value of about 0.5 or 1.0 in the chapman layer,the equivalent shape factor is mostly higher than 0.5 during daytime while close to 0.5 during night except for summer over Millstone Hill,and generally higher at solar maximum than solar *** value of the equivalent shape factor can be much larger than 0.5 by day and much smaller at *** solar maximum and during winter,the equivalent shape factor during daytime can reach a value over 0.74 over both stations,while at solar minimum and over Millstone Hill,it is no more than 0.35 during daytime in summer and can reach as low as about 0.3 during night in winter.
