Exploring the relationship between climate Change and violent conflict

Does climate Change lead to violent conflict? This article reviews the existing literature connecting climatic conditions to conflict. It finds that the existing literature has not detected a robust and general effect from climate to conflict onset. Moreover, there exists scientific agreement that climatic Changes can contribute to conflict under some conditions and through certain pathways.In particular, the recent literature offers considerable suggestive evidence that climatic Changes can lead to conflict in countries and/or regions, which are dependent on agriculture, host politically excluded groups, and have ineffective institutions. Future research should focus not only on understanding of the pathways and contexts in which climatic Changes are most likely to increase or exacerbate the risk of conflict but also work to understand the mechanisms by which climate variability and Change might cause conflict.

Earth observation technology has provided highly useful information in global climate Change research over the past few decades and greatly promoted its development,especially through providing biological,physical,and chemical parameters on a global scale.Earth observation data has the 4V features(volume,variety,veracity,and velocity) of big data that are suitable for climate Change research.Moreover,the large amount of data available from scientific satellites plays an important role.This study reviews the advances of climate Change studies based on Earth observation big data and provides examples of case studies that utilize Earth observation big data in climate Change research,such as synchronous satelliteeaerialeground observation experiments,which provide extremely large and abundant datasets; Earth observational sensitive factors(e.g.,glaciers,lakes,vegetation,radiation,and urbanization); and global environmental Change information and simulation systems.With the era of global environment Change dawning,Earth observation big data will underpin the Future Earth program with a huge volume of various types of data and will play an important role in academia and decisionmaking.Inevitably,Earth observation big data will encounter opportunities and challenges brought about by global climate Change.

Global climate Change mitigation and CO2 emission reduction have promoted the revolutionary transformation in energy system.The core content of energy system revolutionary transformation is to replace the high-carbon energy system dominated by fossil energy with low-carbon energy system dominated by new and renewable energy and finally realize the near-zero emission of CO2.The new energy system transformation has also led to a reform in global economic and social development patterns.Developing low-carbon economy becomes the fundamental strategy of sustainable development under climate risk management and the only solution to getting on the road from industrial civilization to ecological civilization.China intends to achieve the peaking of CO2 emissions around 2030 and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 20% by 2030.Guided by the targets,China directs its economy development to a low-carbon pattern.Therefore,new and renewable power capacity need to reach 1300 GW,and the electricity generated should be 4 times of that in 2013 with a continuous increase rate of 6%e8% around 2030.The pace of energy substitution need to be accelerated and efficient,safe,clean,and low-carbon energy supply and consumption systems should be established besides strengthened energy conservation and improved energy efficient.Therefore,reform need be deepened,favorable policy system and market mechanism for energy revolution and low-carbon development need be established,energy pricing mechanism should be reformed,and national carbon market should be formed to provide a favorable policy and market environment for low-carbon technology innovation and industry development.

Effects of China＇s Structural Change on the Exports of East Asian Economies

The Chinese economy is slowing down and is in the midst of a structural transJormattonfrom export-led and investment-led growth to domestic demand-led and consumption-ledgrowth. While there are widespread concerns among China＇s trading partners about theeffect of the slowdown in China＇s growth on their exports, China＇s structural Changes arealso likely to have a significant impact：for example, China will import fewer machinesand more cosmetics. The central objective of the present paper is to empirically examinethe effect of China＇s structural transformation on the exports of East Asian economies,which have close trade linkages with China. We find that economies that have failed toincrease the share of consumption goods in their exports to China have suffered largerdeclines in their quantities of exports to China. In addition, economies that have sufferedlosses in their shares of China＇s parts and components imports have faced reductions intheir shares in China ＂s total imports.

1 Introduction Marsh-wetland,as an important type of wetlands,is a synthetic natural ecosystem with rich soil organic carbon.The largest area of marsh-wetland was located in Sanjiang Plain in the Northeast China and obvious land use Changes have occurred during the last 50 years with large area of marsh-wetland cultivated to farmland which had a big impact on soil organic carbon stock.In this study,spatial distributions of 0-20cm soil organic carbon sources and sinks in Sanjiang Plain were investigated from 1980 to 2016.

The ecosystems of China seas and coasts are undergoing rapid Changes under the strong influences of both global climate Change and anthropogenic activities.To understand the scope of these Changes and the mechanisms behind them is of paramount importance for the sustainable development of China,and for the establishment of national policies on environment protection and climate Change mitigation.Here we provide a brief review of the impacts of global climate Change and human activities on the oceans in general,and on the ecosystems of China seas and coasts in particular.More importantly,we discuss the challenges we are facing and propose several research foci for China seas/coasts ecosystem studies,including long-term time series observations on multiple scales,facilities for simulation study,blue carbon,coastal ecological security,prediction of ecosystem evolution and ecosystem-based management.We also establish a link to the Future Earth program from the perspectives of two newly formed national alliances,the China Future Ocean Alliance and the Pan-China Ocean Carbon Alliance.

The abrupt Changes of zonal circulation in the Tibetan Plateau(TP) region and their likely causes are derived from National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis data.The zonal circulation over the TP abruptly Changed in summer(31st pentad) and winter(59th pentad).The switch from summer to winter circulation is characterized by a sudden northward shift of the westerlies and the zero-velocity curve and disappearance of the westerly jet.The winter-summer switch is characterized by the reverse pattern.Therefore,the circulation conversion between summer and winter can be judged from the position of the zero-velocity curve.Curves located north of 20 °N indicate summer circulation over the TP and vice versa.The abrupt Change of zonal circulation is mainly caused by the thermodynamic effect of the TP.In June,this effect causes a huge monsoon circulation cell extending from the TP to low latitudes.Consequently,the westerlies jump to the north as easterlies develop.This process,which is enhanced by the strong northerly in Coriolis,establishes the summer circulation.In October,the Hadley cell recurs as the thermal effects of the TP diminish,the westerlies rush southward,and the winter circulation is established.

Much of conventional organizational thinking and practice has been dominated by a belief in stability, with Change deemed a disruptive and temporary aberration in the larger scheme of things. This mindset ignores the dynamic, living complexity of organizational life and very likely leads to static management approaches which hinder and sometimes even destroy an organization＇s effectiveness by restricting its ability to adapt to turbulent and chaotic events. The Chinese notion of shi is embedded in the ancient Chinese appreciation of reality, which saw Change and transformation as an endless flow and an essential feature of the universe; shi is implied by the process of Change and can be made to act in one＇s favor. As a strategy, shi offers us salutary lessons in modern organizational research and practice： rather than merely trying to control every chain of management and avoid chaos and uncertainty by relying on planning and modeling, organizations should also maintain a tentative and alert sensibility concerning the inherent potential of the changing situation, and should be carried along by it as it evolves.

Here we review the activities and recent accomplishments resulting from the global Change and Future Earth initiative studies in China.As a new international research initiative,Future Earth will develop comprehensive knowledge for responding to global Change risks and create transformative opportunities toward future global sustainability.The Chinese National Committee for Future Earth,the consultation project Develop ‘Future Earth in China' for Promoting Social Sustainability and the cooperative international project Co-design of Implementation Plan for Future Earth in China were developed to help foster a culture of sustainability and conservation in China.To help promote the sustainability movement in China,Chinese scientists from both the natural and social sciences,policymakers,and stakeholders are encouraged to join the future activities following the Future Earth model co-design,co-produce,and co-delivery.
