Effects of Magnesia Fines Addition and Spinel with Different Compositions on Thermal Expansion Behavior of Alumina Magnesia castables

Effects of magnesia fines addition （ 4%, 6% and 8% in mass ） and spinel with different compositions （alumina-rich, magnesia-rich and stoichiometric spi-nel） on thermal expansion behavior of alumina magne-sia castables were researched using tabular corundum, magnesia fines, spinel fines, p-A12O3, Secar-71 cement and SiO2 fume as main starting materials. The results show that：（1） thermal expansion coefficients of speci- mens with 4 mass% and 6 mass% magnesia fines have the similar change tendency, increasing slightly with temperature rising ; when magnesia addition is 8 mass% , the thermal expansion coefficient increases ob-viously at Ⅰ 050 ℃ and reaches the peak at 1 350 ℃ ; （2） when MgO content is the same, the specimen with magnesia-rich spinel has the lowest thermal expansion coefficient; （3） for the castables specimens with the same MgO content, the specimen with magnesia has higher thermal expansion coefficient than that with pre-synthesized spin, el, which is related with the secondary spinelization dttriag the heating process.

To satisfy the requirements of alumina castables in specific environment and enhance their properties,alumina castables were prepared using tabular alumina,various alumina powders(07RAL,15RA,22RABL,40CA,99-20um,and 99-325mesh),and calcium aluminate cement as main raw materials,and heat treating at 110,1000,1600℃,*** flowability and physical properties were tested,and the morphology was *** results show that compared with calcined alumina and tabular alumina powders,reactive alumina has higher specific surface area and better filling performance leading to lower water demand and higher viscosity,and the castables prepared with reactive alumina have higher CCS and CMOR after heat treating at 110,1000 and 1600℃as well as lower PLC than those with calcined alumina and tabular alumina powders.

Alumina-magnesia refractory castables have been widely used in the wall and bottom impact pad of steel ladles. The properties of alumina-magnesia refractory castables with SnO2 additive in 0 - 5 wt% range were investigated. The phase composition, microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of these refractories were studied. The results showed that the addition of SnO2 could have a great influence on the properties of alumina-magnesia refractory castables. The expansion, apparent porosity and strength of refractories with SnO2 were all more prominent than those of reference samples, which were attributed to the formation of CA6 and enhanced bonding. Meanwhile SnO2 could react with spinel and CA6 to form solid solution.

A basic alumina -spinel low cement castables （ castables A） and another castables （ castables B） with 5% addition of sodium hexametaphosphate were prepared and heat treated at 110 ℃, 900℃ and 1 400 ℃. It is shown that after heat treating at 110 ℃ , cold crushing strength （CCS） of castables B is more than 3 times of castables A and apparent porosity （ AP ） is less than half of castables A. The presence of Mg2P207 and AIPO4 · 2H2O is the main difference. At 800- 1 000 ℃ that hydraulic bond reverses to dehydrate condition and castables A becomes weak with high porosity, castables B shows a CCS more than 4 times of castables A. Needles of magnesium phosphate are responsible for reinforcing microstructure of castables B at 900 ℃. After firing at 1 400 ℃, castables B shows extra ordinary CCS of more than 100 MPa. Reasons were discussed with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

This work investigates the effect of the pre-firing temperature of andalusite aggregate(5-3 mm)on the conversion of andalusite,the volume stability,the thermal shock resistance and the slag resistance of Al2O3-SiC-C *** results show that the volume stability and the thermal shock resistance of the castables could be adjusted at different pre-firing temperatures of andalusite *** was no noticeable difference in the slag resistance between the specimens without andalusite and those with andalusite aggregate pre-fired at different temperatures.

A series of corundum based castables with 0,2%,4%,6%,and 8% α-Al2O3 micropowders were prepared using tabular alumina aggregates （6-3,3-1 and ≤1 mm） and fines （≤0.088 and ≤0.045 mm）,calcium aluminate cement,and α-Al2O3 micropowders （d50=1.754 μm） as starting materials. Cold mechanical strength and pore size distribution of the castables specimens after heat treatment at 110,1 100 and 1 500 ℃ were tested,respectively. The quantitative relationship between strength and apparent porosity,and that between strength and median pore diameter were verified by Atzeni equation. The correlation between interval of pore size and mechanical strength of specimens was also studied by means of gray relational theory. The results show that：（1） the pore size distribution of castables is strongly influenced by both micropowders filling and matrix sintering; the addition of micropowders decreases median pore diameter while the sintering process increases it; （2） when adding a constant correction term,Atzeni equation can substantially describe the quantitative relationship between median pore diameter and strength of castables specimens after heat treatment at the same temperature; the significant differences of the gray relational degree between the interval of pore size and castables strength are characterized; it is also found that for the same interval of pore size,the gray relational degree isaffected by the heat treatment temperature; the pore size interval 〈0.5 μm has the highest gray relational degree with the strength at 110-1 500 ℃.

In this study, the properties of self-flowing ultra-low cement castables in Al2O3-SiC-C system have been investigated and compared to vibration castables. The major physical and mechanical properties, microstructure and corrosion behavior of these castables against slag have been evaluated. The results showed that the microstructure of Al2O3-SiC-C self-flowing castable is more uniform than the vibrated structure. Also self-flowing castable has smaller pore size and more uniform pore size distribution. Hence, density, strength, oxidation and slag resistance of the self-flowing castables is higher than that of vibration castables. Therefore, besides other benefits such as noise free, easy installation, fewer mold defects and reduced installation costs, Al2O3-SiC-C self flowing ultra low cement castables will have longer service life in comparison with vibration casables.

Rheological Behavior of Bauxite-Based SiC-Containing castables

Low cement (LC) and ultra low cement (ULC) bauxite SiC castables are important and high performance monolithic refractories and they have been widely used in iron making and incinerator linings. In this work, rheological behavior of LC and ULC bauxite based SiC containing castables has been studied, including the effects of SiC content and cement content on rheological properties of the castables. The results show that with an increase of SiC and cement content, rheological properties of the castables deteriorate. On the other hand, moderate amounts of SiC (4%～8%) and of calcium aluminate cement (2%～4%) have very slight influence on rheological properties, (i.e. when the castables are sheared their torque and yield torque only slightly increase with the shearing speed). The rheological characteristics of the castables follow Bingham fluid and always show shear thinning behavior.

Effect of Boric Acid on Properties of Calcined Flint Clay-bauxite castables

In order to prolong the working time of calcined flint clay-bauxite castables during construction at high temperature,boric acid was added into the castables. The effect of boric acid on working time and curing cold crushing strength of the castables at 25 ℃ and 35 ℃ were investigated. After 24 h curing in mould and another 24 h curing at 110 ℃ after demoulding,the specimens were heat treated at 1 000 ℃,1 300 ℃,and 1 500 ℃ for 3 h,respectively. The permanent linear change,bulk density,modulus of rupture,and cold crushing strength were determined. The result shows that there is no need to add boric acid when calcined flint clay-bauxite castables works at 25 ℃; when calcined flint clay-bauxite castables works at 35 ℃,boric acid can increase the working time of the castables,but decrease the curing cold crushing strength a little. Adding boric acid into calcined flint clay-bauxite castables doesn＇t worsen performance of the castables.
